Application Advice:

Be yourself and really try to understand what your general day to day role will entail. Try to distinguish what your strengths are and whether they align and are suited to the role you are applying for.

Interview Advice:

Why audit? What do you understand by the term audit? Why the ACA qualification?

Auditor, Accountancy at Barnes Roffe LLP

Application Advice:

Research about the actual role itself and what audit involves.

Interview Advice:

Brush up on some maths skills for the first interview. If you study an accountancy related course you may be asked questions relating to accounting i.e. balance sheet or income statement. Just be yourself as both interviews are enjoyable and you are made to feel very relaxed.

Application Advice:

Keep it professional and make sure you read the questions and answer exactly what they are asking.

Interview Advice:

Subject knowledge is not the most important area, look to showcase your communication skills and willingness to learn and improve.

Application Advice:

I would advise that potential applicants have a brief understanding of what the accountancy profession does and what the training process involves.

Interview Advice:

Although it's not necessary to have studied accounting, it's a good idea to do some research about the role and the qualification.

Application Advice:

Make sure that you check your CV for spelling/grammatical mistakes, as a lot of applications are received and simple errors such as these will result in your application being rejected early on. In addition make sure to only include pertinent information within your CV, even if you want to get all of your achievements in, sometimes less is more.

Interview Advice:

There will be a basic maths test before the first interview, so it is worth doing some practice before the exam, if only to make you feel slightly more at ease.

Application Advice:

Ensure that you are well versed about what the ACA/ACCA is prior to applying for the job.

Interview Advice:

The interviews are not so heavily focused on accounting knowledge, so do not worry if you do not have an accounting/finance background. They are more geared towards judging you as a person and whether you can cope with audits and have the right skills and mindset for it.

Application Advice:

Make sure you understand what the job involves. Have a look at a set of company accounts and make sure you understand what is involved in an audit.

Interview Advice:

At my interview they stayed clear of the typical HR competency questions (such as describe a time you have worked in a team etc.), and focused more on what accountants/auditors do, and how I thought I would fit into that mould. A great deal of technical knowledge was not required for the interview.

Application Advice:

We liaise with clients on a daily basis so prove that you are the right person for the job by referring to previous work experience that involves communicating with customers etc. There is a lot of college work and exams involved so a strong academic record is essential.

Interview Advice:

Show your sociable skills - be confident but not too much, just enough to show that you can communicate with people well. However, at the same time show off your academic skills. Perhaps point out current economic factors or what you have learnt whilst studying/in a previous job role that relates to accountancy.

Application Advice:

Apply for jobs that you think you'll enjoy. If you like working with people and in a logical manner then accountancy may be for you.

Interview Advice:

Ultimately, interviewers looking to hire a member of their audit team are looking for individuals who can communicate well with their clients.

They are not necessarily looking for good accountancy knowledge as you shall learn this at college. Instead they are looking for someone who can think of their feet and wont get thrown by an unusual question. They want to see that when you talk to a client you know how to handle yourself and that you don't panic when asked something you don't understand.

Application Advice:

You will learn a lot but be prepared for some hard work.

Interview Advice:

Be forthright. The interview lacked the formal approach and set questions that you are likely to face elsewhere, particular in large corporations. They avoided what I call 'nonsense questions' (What is your greatest achievement... Explain a time when you had to contribute to a team... etc.), instead opening with 'Why do you want the job?' with the rest of the interview being rather colloquial and mutually lead. I found this refreshing.

Do your research, of course, but it is more important to be honest and open.

Application Advice:

Read up on the role before applying.

Make sure you are 100% committed to the role you are applying for.

Interview Advice:

Be prepared to take a maths test when attending your first interview. The maths test is not difficult, however better to be prepared than not prepared.

Be confident when speaking with the Managers and Partners in your interview, keeping eye contact.

Read up on the role, as they may ask you 'what do you expect to achieve from the position?'. May ask you 'why you want the position?'. Be confident, but not arrogant. Finally, honesty is the best policy in an interview.

Application Advice:

Research the job you are applying for, and the audit industry as a whole.

It also pays to have looked into the company initially, as the interviewers will expect you to have done some work prior to the interview.

Application Advice:

Spelling and grammar matter!

You will be in a client facing role and representing the firm. In this role, you need to be able to have intelligent conversation with directors, ask the right questions and be able to analyse results relatively quickly, if you can't spell in an application or string sentences together it does not give the impression you can manage these tasks.

Interview Advice:

My advice is: know the job you are applying for.

Starting at graduate stage, the interview process isn't technical. They don't expect you to know accounting rules, but they do expect you to know what you are getting yourself in for. If you know what an audit junior would do on a day to day basis, and if you know what an audit is you will have a much better chance of getting a job in audit.

Application Advice:

Apply early and don't get caught in the rush when everyone finishes school or uni.

Interview Advice:

Be confident, be yourself and don't be afraid.

Interviews can be tough but they don't have to be. Dress smart, you want to look the part, and make sure you're enthusiastic about the job.

Finally, be polite. No one wants to hire someone to go out to work with clients who's rude.
