Really think of the answers you are going to give on the inital application, and throughout the process. It is also worth noting down your specific goals, and relevant experiences so that you are able to refer back to them on any given occasion.

Interview Advice:

Make sure the answers you provide are in CAR format, and that they are coherent. If you have a specific occasion where you feel as though you demonstrated more than one competency, and the additional comes up, make sure you accentuate how you demonstrated this, as opposed to repeating the occasion word for word.

Application Advice:

Application Advice:

Take your time and make sure any CV/cover letter you submit are unique to the company - in other words, try and tick off the expected competencies laid out in the job role. Applying for jobs is tough and often you want to get as many applications in as you can in the shortest length of time - going for quality of application over quantity would be my advice

Interview Advice:

All about preparation. Cadent gave us an idea of the type of things we would be asked and also asked us to prepare a presentation. The hours I put in in the week leading up gave me good confidence by the time the interview arrived.

Although its difficult to predict, having some good general knowledge about the technical work a company does will always stand you in good stead.

Also brush up on your knowledge of OFGEM and the future challenges for the industry.

Application Advice:

Keep your answers concise and clear.

Be honest with what you've done.

Enjoy the interview as it's a chance not only for them to find out about you but its also a chance for you to find more out about the company and some of the interviewers experiences at the company.

It's a good chance to describe situations that have gone well, but also good to show situations where it didn't go to plan and how you learnt or overcame from this.

Application Advice:

Try and apply as early as you can and be patient as they sometimes take a while to get back to you. Be honest and provide as much information about previous jobs, experiences and extra curricular activities as you will never know what can catch their eye. You also need to be prepared to move around during the scheme as they require you to be flexible. Most of the roles are not heavily technical as they usually outsource these type of activities so that's something to consider for those who are very technically biased, you're not going to be spending all day doing calculations.

Interview Advice:

Do your research on the industry and company along with its current affairs as you will probably get a question on this. Know the company's core values. Prepare for competency based questions and calm your nerves, the assessors are not there to catch you out. Just be yourself and everything else will fall into place.

Application Advice:

If you're seeking an engineering career, look carefully. This is a company in the engineering industry but does not do much engineering on a day to day basis as most activities revolve around maintaining a vast pre-existing network of infrastructure, with a lot of the actual large project work outsourced.
However, if you're looking to see how a large business in the energy industry grows and operates, this company is definitely worth applying to. It provides exposure to all levels of the business in a rapidly evolving industry. In applying, make your goals clear - what would you like to see/be involved in?

Interview Advice:

Prepare for your assessment centre by reading up on the industry. Be mentally agile and prepared to adapt to new situations. Emphasise your ability to build on others and support others, not just your ability to shine.

Recently split from a larger company so now has the room to tailor their values, culture and processes to the customer and our main objectives. The change in the company over the past 2 years has been incredible and definitely bodes well for the future.

Worst:

Because the company has existed in many forms for the past 200 years, it has previously been very slow to change. It carried a 'Well, we have always done it this way' culture and attitude which is thankfully being challenged more by new leadership and an increased intake of staff from many different industries and backgrounds.

Supportive working environment with access to the senior leadership team with ease. No opportunites are kept from you and if you ask and enquire, people will always try to help.
Flexible working environment with understanding you have other commitments, managers seem willing to help you work round your personal life.
If you show willingness to learn, motivation and interest in the company and it's pepople, progression is easy to get.
It is a great company and I've really enjoyed working here and not being an engineer has been an advantage rather than a disadvantage because the company is full of people who view things the same way.

Worst:

The location of Cadent is an inconvenience and because of it's location it is lacking in the much needed talent to solve some of the company's challenges. Due to the lack of talent, you also find the people you are working with have very little self-motivation making it difficult to deliver at a quick pace. This is also similar with the ageing workforce, mostly in operations who outright refuse to adapt and help those trying to bring in change and working conditions and tools which will help them.
The introduction of the new contracts to the graduate cohort was dealt with poorly with minimal communciation/understanding and I therefore, lost a bit of loyalty to Cadent. And then they made the same mistakes with the new graduates and advertised things on the job board which weren't given. HR within the company needs a revamp itself.

- Great benefits package
- Generous annual leave allowance
- Caring working environment
- Flexibility to work from different office locations
- High focus on personal development and career progression
- Always plenty of opportunities to get involved in ad-hoc work outside of your direct job role.
- A huge amount of support from a variety of sources: graduate scheme program, you can seek out mentors, coaches and buddies within the business, line managers etc.

Worst:

Being a larger organization it can sometimes take longer to get things done (for example: getting work approved, as there could be a few approvers at different levels which need to see the document before it can be signed off).

Again being a larger organization, it's sometimes not clear who your point of contact is if you have a query at all. However, there are always people around you who can point you in the right direction and you'll get the right contact in the end.

There are plenty of fantastic development opportunities. It is a wonderful working environment because everyone is always willing to spare some time help across all hierarchical levels. The training offered is extremely comprehensive and there is a lot of support available for personal, as well as professional development. Volunteering opportunities also available for those who like giving back to communities. The 6 month rotational placements give you an opportunity to experience other areas of the business and its up to you to pitch for where you want to go.

Worst:

There scheme is not structured and set up to guide you through to chartership if that's something you're interested in. It will mostly be self driven albeit they're happy to pay for the fees and have mentors available. Migrating to a new business unit every six months means you have to leave by the time you start getting properly comfortable.
