Get to grips with what SEO campaigns are versus social campaigns, and how you can integrate the two.

Have a clear understanding of the role you are applying for as people can be confused. My role doesn't entail making the advert itself, I buy the advertising space. Also look into the company, the clients they work with and have some TV background.

Interview Advice:

Make sure you know about the company and the role clearly then try to do further research into topics such as BARB data so it's clear you have an understanding of the job.
I was asked about which programmes would suit certain brands so try to have an understanding of different products and companies and the audiences they are trying to target.

It's hard to jump from university into a full-time position, as you may feel that you're stepping into the unknown. Though the friendliness of the agency makes it easy to settle and everyone is always willing to help you at any time.

Application Advice:

Make sure that you show off your passion for the industry- this isn't advertising, this is media planning and buying. Everyone who works here is smart and articulate- you don't need to have all A's but demonstrate that you like to push yourself.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself. It's all about personality here and it varies by agency or department that you work for. You'll be making some great friendships. Although we are a sociable company we are still professional, so still prepare and try and wrap your head around the company structure.

Grades are important but the thing that makes the difference is being a polite, friendly, sociable character.

Interview Advice:

Brush up on your maths skills - percentages, ratios and interpreting graphs. Ask a lot of questions but not for the sake of it - try and find out about the company itself, why people like working there. If you are moving from outside of London, ask why people enjoy living there, what it can offer that other cities can't. Think about what you want from a job and career.

Application Advice:

Don't necessarily write your skills chronologically; consider writing them in order of relevance to the position you are applying for and explain with it the application to the job.

Logistical, reasoning, mathematical, and and negotiation skills are a must, so try to show you have these skills.

Keep it to one side of A4. Overwriting is overkill.

Put something on there that'll make you stand out; people in media are a weird bunch, so throw in a curveball to make it memorable (e.g. dodgeball, speed knitting, etc.)

Interview Advice:

Learn about the job you are applying for by asking people currently in the job their day-to-day tasks and overall work process. You will be asked what you think the job involves.

Read about what is happening in the industry and keep up-to-date with recent ad campaigns that are relevant to your job. You will be asked to comment about things happening now, as well as make predictions on future trends.

Have a broad understanding of prices, pros & cons, and features of various media platforms (e.g. Film costs more than TV which costs more than Radio, but all have various audiences and reach).

Go to relevant websites and swot up on vocab and data (e.g. Thinkbox, IPA, etc.)

Reiterating my last point do your homework-Investigate the company, go on job forums, check out the people who will be interviewing you and most importantly read thoroughly about the role.

Application Advice:

Really look into how the company works and try to stand out. Your CV should just say the facts where as your portfolio should do all the talking, pick 3 awesome pieces to show that you did by yourself in a short time period. Pick 3 pieces you did in a team and explain your role, and generally show you are willing to learn and improve yourself.

Interview Advice:

Be laid back but serious, be a very friendly character and always show you're willing to better your skills and understanding of the job you just did next time.

Application Advice:

I would advise candidates to thoroughly research the industry and role, specifically the day-to-day tasks the role will require. It is important to know why you want to work in media and why you believe you will be suited to the role itself. For instance, organisational skills are really important as well as adaptability and an eagerness to learn. My agency in particular (UM) prides itself on a curiosity culture, so I would encourage any applicants to demonstrate how they are 'curious' in their day to day lives.

Interview Advice:

- Think about how your strengths as an individual will fit into a media environment. For instance are you always first to know about new technology/do you have strong presentation skills and a competitive nature which will help in agency pitches?
- Try

Application Advice:

The theme is "Get Yourself Noticed" so you have got to think outside the box, if you're really passionate about media and advertising then thinking of yourself as a concept, a service or a product that you're trying to sell will help you consider ways you can impress the HR team. They are real people too (I only realised that at the assessment centre!) so make it enjoyable for them to review your application.

Interview Advice:

Review some campaigns you like and you don't like! Reading Campaign magazine and Marketing Week will help put you in the right frame of mind as well as reafirm that you really want the job!
