Application Advice:

Usually the application involves online verbal/numerical/reasoning tests, personality test, video interview, and finally assessment centre at Cheltenham.
The assessment centre usually contains group activity project, presentation, and a technical interview.

Interview Advice:

For the technical interview, a basic review of basic thermodynamics may be useful.
For the HR interview, just relax, be original and truthful.
The interviews are not about the right answer they are about your thought process and, even more important, they are not about ticking off competencies using past experience, they are about showing capabilities and potential.

Apply early and be honest. The company is looking for brains with ideas, not exam results.

Interview Advice:

Application Advice:

The applicants assessment is based more in character and potential than in competencies and past experience. In other words they're hiring the people, not their resume. So relax, be yourself, and explain your worthiness in your own terms.

Interview Advice:

Some basic and practical thermodynamics can be useful for the technical interview, although the questions can vary from business to manufacturing or physics. Don't worry too much, it's not all about the right answer, it's about the mental path towards one.

You are being tested on how you think, and how you analyse an unknown problem rather than on any specific knowledge. So be prepared to think out loud.

Enthusiasm is key to getting most out of each placement, they are looking for responsible engineers who can use their technical ability as well as their personal skills.

Application Advice:

I think it is important to accept that you will not know everything and the process will be about challenging you. Due to the nature of the scheme they are looking for quick learners and adaptable people, so I'd think of ways that you can show this throughout your application.

Interview Advice:

In my interview I was asked to give a presentation, so I would make sure that you practive your presentation skills.

I had a technical interview which involved looking at a piece of equipment so having a basic knowledge of products that you may find in a steam plant would be helpful.

Application Advice:

come with an open mind, be prepared for a steep learning curve, and bring as many new ideas as you can - this company appreciates them

Interview Advice:

Answers- they do not want the correct answer per say. they want to know your thinking and how you think and get to an answer. so think out loud.

Technical Sales Executive, GOPC at Spirax Sarco

Application Advice:

They are after the people, not necessarily the skills. So it will not suffice to show excellent academic results, having done many internships or worked before will NOT give somebody a distincitive advantage. It doesn't matter if you are not the perfect student. They focus on the whole person and his personality as much as anything else, focusing on potential. They are very organised in their recruitment process and assess verbal, numerical, and behavorial and personality skills early on with online tests, the later being verified in subsequent interviews, to give you a place in an assessment centre and finaly a job offer.

Interview Advice:

Be scrupulously truthfull, do not say what you think they want to hear, say what you feel and explain and expand on it to justify it when appropriate.

If it is a technical interview, don't get stuck on remembering, show your thought process and path instead.

Application Advice:

The technical interview is there to test your thinking processes, not your knowledge. But maybe brush up on basic thermodynamics. Otherwise just be yourself.

Best:

A highly successful and well respected company that operates globally across a wide range of industries. All employees have excellent benefits packages and Spirax really makes an effort to look after its workforce, and is constantly looking to provide more perks.

Worst:

The steam industry is very niche, which shelters a lot of the work at Spirax from being exposed to wider engineering/industry practices or innovation, but equally Spirax is world-leading at what it does, so is often looking to set the standards within steam.
