Read widely about the firm and see what its clients say about it and why it is a market-leader.

Interview Advice:

Ensure you know in which sectors the firm's clients operate. Read widely about them and be prepared to talk about what you have read and what interests you. Remember you are unique so don't read into what you think the firm wants you to read, read about matters that genuinely interest you and on which you have formed your own opinion. Be prepared to communicate that opinion efficiently.

Application Advice:

There are two key things: tailoring the application to the firm and commercial awareness.

Ensure that you work on getting to know the firm, its strategies, its values, its location(s) so that your application looks like you really know about the firm itself. The people who read the applications spend their lives immersed in the firm culture and will be able to spot someone who has no understanding or only a shallow understanding of the firm.

Commercial awareness should arise naturally from an interest in working in the law/the City. It's as simple as checking BBC/Guardian business news a few times a day and actively considering the likely impact of whatever has happened. After a few months of actively following the business news you will achieve commercial awareness enlightenment.

To improve commercial awareness, I would also recommend buying some shares in a FTSE 350 company or simply conducting paper trades. You'll become a lot more interested once you've got some skin in the game.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself. Follow previous advice about commercial awareness.

The firm assumes that you are intelligent and qualified, at the interview stage they want to see what you're like as an individual and potential employee. Be polite, conscientious and human.

Make your application specific - tie in key and recent deals the firm has been working on and make sure you mention them in any application or interview.

Interview Advice:

Know your application and CV well - expect a grilling about your experiences so make sure you know what you're talking about and haven't made things up!

Application Advice:

Do proper research before applying - you should know the areas the firm is strong at and recognised for, but also appreciate the fact that it is a full-service law firm. Try to attend one of the events organised for students and come prepared with good questions.

Interview Advice:

Thoroughly research the firm. I would also recommend to read commercial and corporate news for a few weeks leading up to the interview (think of major news topics in the past few months and how it can impact the firm and its clients).

Application Advice:

Research the firms, try to get a real feel for what the environment is like and try to get internships in law firms outside of vacation schemes in order to assess whether you actually like solicitor work (vac schemes usually have so much packed into them that most people do not get to see/work on a lot of things).

Interview Advice:

Know your application and CV inside out, have good explanations for any gaps/shortcomings on your CV, get interview practice via your university or even just your friends.

Application Advice:

Be yourself. Tailor your answers to the firm's business and culture. Flatter the firm and yourself.

Interview Advice:

I was asked the typical questions which can be found in the hundreds of legal graduate recruitment "what to expect at your interview" articles.

They will ask you questions about the firm and areas where they can approve. Throughout the whole process you should consider every answer through a firm-tinted lens: firstly, they want to see that you understand the legal career and business in general and secondly they want to see that you understand their firm's place in that system.

Ultimately, you should be yourself. It's easy enough to pretend to have some knowledge, interest or characteristic for an hour long interview but that becomes difficult over a 2 year training contract.

There were no odd questions, and the interviewers really did make sure I felt comfortable and was able to do my best. Rather than read a list of set questions from a sheet and scribble down my answers in order to compare me to other candidates who were asked identical questions, the interview flows in the direction your answers lead and really felt more like an enjoyable conversation. Give practical answers - if you don't know the legal approach, take a moment to think about it, admit it, and give a sensible, commercial response. Don't talk over other candidates in the group assessment - it's not a test for who shouts the loudest but for how you interact with others.

Research the specific firm in detail and make sure you reflect your research in the application by pointing out why you think you would be a good fit for it and vice versa. Interview Advice:

Make sure you have re-read your application as you may be asked questions. With commercial questions, approach them calmly and don't try and be too clever with your answers - the interviewers do not necessarily accept a perfect answer but want to know your thinking pattern.

Application Advice:

I started in the firm as a trainee and progressed to becoming a solicitor, and the application process is different depending on what level you enter in.

In all cases I would advise making sure you understand the culture of the firm - something I always tell future joiners is that we can teach you the law and how to be a lawyer, but we cannot teach you to be somebody that everybody else enjoys working with. To that end, don't just read up on the firm on their website, but try and get in contact with people at the firm at a variety of different levels, whether that be through personal contacts or open days. Speak to them about their experiences and draw your own conclusions on what working at the firm is like. Use that together with information on the website to really form your own, non-generic view of the firm.

Interview Advice:

Don't be afraid to show the interviewers your personality - it is better for them to see that you're passionate about one of your hobbies than to feed them a dry spiel about something which you think you should be talking about but actually aren't at all interested in.

Be proactive - get as much experience as you can. This may be first-hand (e.g. vacation scheme/volunteering) or by reading around subjects that interest you.

Interview Advice:

Take a breath before answering each question and make sure you're answering the question asked (and not just babbling!).

Application Advice:

Make sure you really put down all your achievements, don't assume the firm knows what you learnt from any one experience or roll.

Interview Advice:

On my assessment day, those that got the Training Contract were those who were relaxed (or at least appeared to be) and interacted well with others. Make sure you are as calm as possible and let your personality shine through because you could be exactly who they are looking for.

Application Advice:

Make sure it's totally tailored to you - answer honestly, not what you think they're going to want to read.

Interview Advice:

Research the firm well - recent deals, ethos, financials, partners, teams, sector approach, so you tailor your answers around that. When reading about deals in the press, think about what departments from the law firm would've been involved, and what their role would be. This forces you to consider what issues may have come up in the deal.

Application Advice:

Make sure you research the firm itself and avoid making your application generic as that will come across.

Interview Advice:

Review your application so that you are prepared to answer questions arising from it. Don't be afraid to let your personality come through at the interview.

Application Advice:

Tailor your application to the firm and try to research as much as possible.

Interview Advice:

I actually enjoyed my interview! They were very friendly and tried to get the best out of me rather than catch me out. The interview definitely has a commercial focus, including a mini exercise and questions like "How would you sell TW to a client who wanted to do X?"

Application Advice:

Do your research and really think about your answers and tailor them to Taylor Wessing specifically, rather than just using the same answers as for other City firms.

Application Advice:

Be yourself - everybody at Taylor Wessing has a personality and we are all quite different. I think it is important to let your character come out in your application. Obviously it is important to be professional, but it doesn't hurt to show the firm what you're about and your hobbies and interests. Make sure you research the firm, Taylor Wessing has some great CSR and charity partnerships which are an important part of the firms community so candidates should get to know these!

Interview Advice:

Again, be yourself!

Application Advice:

Make your application specific to Taylor Wessing - a copy and pasted application will not get you to interview. Let your enthusiasm for TW and for law shine through - this can be shown through things such as work experience and open days.

Interview Advice:

Prepare thoroughly by reading up on the firm and re-reading your application. Try and not be nervous - the interviewers are not trying to trick you, just to understand your personality.

Application Advice:

Really understand the firm, the culture and why you want to do law. Show off your personality rather than churning out a monotony of application answers.

Interview Advice:

As with the application, try and show off your personality as well as answering the typical questions. The interviewers want to get to know you as a candidate as well as your academic and extra-curricular achievements.

The people are great, the work is great, the offices and location are great.

Their is a mutual appreciation of the need for a work:life balance and in most circumstances life trumps work. People won't mind that you're leaving a little early to make a social event because they know that in a couple of weeks they'll be in a similar position.

Worst:

Whilst people are understanding of the need for a life outside work, you can never guarantee your leave time.
