What are the best and worst things about your job?

The mix of technical parts of the job, where you are on spreadsheets and dealing with lots of numbers and the communication aspect as well, not just within your team but in meeting and asking questions to many brokers.
I have also really enjoyed meeting many people all around the company in different lines of business.
The rotational element of the graduate scheme is fantastic as you gain experience in underwriting many Lloyd's lines of business within a 2.5 year period. There is also an international placement aspect of the job as well at the end of the graduate scheme which links into the line of business that we will be entering once the graduate scheme has finished.

Use each stage of the application process to highlight your own personal strengths and experience and prove how these make you suitable to the role. Many applicants will have similar applications so try to and highlight how yours stands out.

Interview Advice:

Be diligent with your CV and application form as they will be closely scrutinised in interviews. The interviews focus more on you and your experiences rather than how much you know about insurance; be sure to prepare for questions about your achievements and experiences and link these to a potential career in insurance.

As with most interviews it is important to research the company thoroughly, knowing the values, different classes and position within the market.
Tokio Marine Kiln combines interpersonal, externally facing employees with strong expertise so it is important to demonstrate you would be a match for that kind of environment. Consequently, portraying yourself as a well balanced, intuitive individual with a genuine interest in insurance, and in particular underwriting, goes a long way.

Application Advice:

The TMK application process is quite extensive, but my advice to any potential applicant would be to see this as an opportunity to learn more about the company that you could be working for, for the next foreseeable future. I found that my confidence and conviction that TMK was where I wanted to be and where I would be suited grew with every successful advancement through the application stages.
When it comes to the actual interview process, the structured assessment day can be quite tiring but again see the whole day as an opportunity to make an impression. Don't be discouraged by the odd difficult question, as you will find that you will be given opportunity to make amends and impress as the day progresses.
The key piece of advice that I can give any potential applicant is to focus on the role and know that it is what you want to do. I can speak from my own personal experiences and those of friends when I advise that spreading yourself thin when it comes to graduate role applications will greatly reduce your chances of being successful. TMK and other recruiting companies alike will dedicate a lot of time and effort to finding out as much as they can about you as an applicant because they want to hire the correct applicant; therefore it makes sense that you adopt a similar approach to finding out about the role and the company.

Interview Advice:

The questions that I faced ranged from general ones about my interests to insurance industry specific questions. I tried to use every opportunity to show my enthusiasm for the company and for insurance. I didn't really face too many competency questions but that is not to say that they couldn't throw some at you, but then with these as with all questions I would just advise that you think the question through and don't rush into answering. I can't imagine that you will face many interview questions where there is a specific correct answer but just take the opportunity to exhibit a rational and logical through process.
The early stages of the application process will include some competency/numerical tests (probably online) so try and get a little practice in for these to ensure that you are confident when it comes to dealing with time pressured tests.

Application Advice:

Make sure you answer the questions with as much description as possible, the more TMK know about you they can make an informed judgement. They are looking for well rounded people and make sure that what you can bring to the comapny is something special.

Interview Advice:

Always be yourself, there is an extensive interview process and it would not benefit you to be anything other than yourself. Make it clear that you have aptitude to learn but the expectation is that you also join TMK to learn and develop, so bear that in mind when answering questions.

Application Advice:

Show that you are a well rounded individual who can adopt to most situations. Kiln are't looking for somebody who can already underwrite insurance, but more for somebody who will fit into the company well.

Interview Advice:

Be prepared for a lot of interviews, and make sure your answers are delivered in a positive manner.

Application Advice:

Aside from satisifying the mandatory requirements, the most important factor I think the company looks for is personality - why are you unique. The insurance industry, in particular the Lloyds platform is all about forming relationships and working with people. Your personality will form a key aspect of this ability to build relationships.

Application Advice:

Being analytical is of great importance, as is good communication. To this end, look to demonstrate not only your technical abilities but also be personable and able to communicate your point at the same time. This will be important when applying and throughout your prospective Kiln career.

Interview Advice:

Be honest, confident and eloquent. Successful candidates will need to demonstrate their aptitude and also their personality. The good working atmosphere within Kiln is formed of the personalities of its staff.

Application Advice:

Ensure that you have fully researched the company, the specific role you are applying for and any topical issues taking place in the insurance market. It is also advisable to have some understanding of the Lloyd's market.

Think about your key skills and how you are tailored to the role you are applying for.

Interview Advice:

If you have thoroughly researched the company and thought about your key skills then you should be well prepared to answer any questions in an interview.

Application Advice:

Carry out some research both into the company and insurance in general. When applying for the graduate scheme look to convey your enthusiasm and interest by relating your answers to the insurance industry. See the application process as an opportunity to make a great first impression, as your answers will be remembered if you progress to the interview stages.

Interview Advice:

There are quite a few stages to the interview process and I would advise that instead of being daunted by this, see it as an opportunity. I was able to enhance my knowledge of the company as I progressed through each stage by taking every opportunity to ask questions.
Those interviewing you will take an active interest in your application, so ensure that you are able to confidently recall your answers. I spoke of my interest in the Lloyd's market throughout my application and I was then subsequently asked to tell my interviewer a few facts about Lloyd's.

Application Advice:

Kiln go for the confident and sociable types but tend to avoid the overly confident/cocky sort. To be successful at interview it is important to sell yourself in terms of your qualities and achievements but another vital part of the interview is to build a natural rapport with the interviewers to show that you would fit in well.

Interview Advice:

Lots of 'give me an example of a time when.......' type questions.
They are looking for leadership, problem solving qualities so be prepared!

Application Advice:

Prepare for the same competency questions as for every other insurance company.

Interview Advice:

Try to develop as comprehensive an understanding of the insurance industry (and Kiln's position within it) as possible. You're not expected to be an expert but knowing about it demonstrates an interest. Example questions along those lines which I was asked included 'why do you want to work in Lloyd's rather than the companies' market?'

Personal relationships are vital in insurance so it's important that you're chatty and likeable, but not to the extent that you're perceived as cocky.
