Application Advice:

Be personable - all of the work that Accenture does is very client-facing, so the absolute first thing they are looking for is can they put you in front of a client.

Interview Advice:

A mixture of motivation and competency questions were asked. They don't try to trip you up, so if you're well prepared you'll be fine.

Application Advice:

Research the company beyond just its website.

Interview Advice:

The interviewers hear the same answers every time, so be different in the answer that you give. Also, listen to instructions, when they say you have 15 mins to answer 5 questions they mean answer all five questions. As soon as you walk through the door into the building you are being assessed. Acknowledge everyone you come across, even if you aren't in an interview setting.

Be yourself and be genuine - recruiters will be able to see through it otherwise. Hone in on your skills rather than what you think they want to hear.

Interview Advice:

Be passionate about the company and the questions they ask you. If you can show a genuine interest in them and an excitement to work there, they will be more willing to look past any lack of skills you may have.

Application Advice:

Do your research on case studies. Know the kind of work Accenture does, and the way the company is structured ie. Operating Groups, and Client Service Groups.

Interview Advice:

What makes Accenture a better choice than its competitors? What interests you most about a career with Accenture? Also, plenty of 'discuss a time you demonstrated X' type questions. Accept that you can't always have the right answer. When pushed on your group task, it's perfectly fine to ask for a little thinking time. It is just as good to give a well thought through and logical answer, as long as you can back up your reasoning than worry about what is the 'correct' answer.

Don't over prepare but at the same time understand the company and what you're actually applying for.
Reach out to anyone you know currently at Accenture.

Interview Advice:

Again be yourself, relax and enjoy the day.
See the other interviewees as your teammates rather than competitors- it's all about teamwork skills rather than dog-eat-dog.
Practice your interview questions with someone.

Show a keen interest in technology and it is important to ensure you are doing things outside of your degree to help build good business acumen as well as your communication skills.

Q: How would you explain a technical problem to a none technical person.
Q: Explain a time you failed to deliver on something and how you approached a solution.
Always be yourself and get involved in the interview, it is more about working together to come up with the best solution, not what you know.

Application Advice:

Be under no illusions: Accenture is a technology consulting company first and foremost. In all likelihood, if employed, you will spend most of your career working on big IT projects - even if you are formally aligned to management consulting. Similarly, be prepared to spend months (or even a year) in a role or on a project you don't like before you get the chance to specify what you want to do with your career.

In terms of preparation, be careful to "do your homework". Make sure you are clear what you are applying for, why you are right for the position and why you want it. What is it about consulting, and about Accenture in particular, that appeals to you? Do some research into project plans and how to make one, as you will be asked to do so.

Interview Advice:

Interviewers are more interested in how you think about problems and how you communicate your ideas (under pressure!) than they are in how quickly you answer, or whether you get the answer "right". In practice, this means you shouldn't be afraid to pause for a moment to think before answering, and you absolutely should talk your interviewer through your thought process as you go. If you can find someone to prep you by asking tough questions, that will help too.

Understand that the majority of Accenture's revenues comes from IT delivery. This is what we do best. While we do have a Strategy practice, this is small in comparison to other companies. I would therefore advise that only applicants who have a real interest in technology should apply because even if you do end up doing Strategy or MC work, it's likely that IT will play a part somehow.

The interview involved a case-study, group activity and a one-on-one interview. I would advise to research Accenture's delivery methods and software offerings, understand the project lifecycle and wider trends in IT delivery such as agile. How might these shape our strategy in the future?

1) Do your research. You have probably heard it a hundred times, but it is true. The trick is to make sure you relate the values of the company to you. It shows that you have not just done your homework and looked at their website, but that you thought about it and REALLY are the best fit for the company.
Check out LinkedIn, etc.
2) Go to events, presentations, etc. and write down the names of the people you talked to so that you can mention them on your cover letter or during your interview.

Interview Advice:

I am not saying it is easy, I am saying that preparing it definitely pays off and makes the process way more enjoyable! I had fun during my assessment day and felt confident in my answers during the interview because I had thought of it before hand.

Speak to people at the company - do research on what people actually do (this is a hard thing to discover) and try and work out what it is you're interested in/why you actually want to work here. If you can capture that interest in your application (as well as what you bring to the business), your application will be stronger.

Interview Advice:

Prepare for the phone interview! Read through the grad website, great links there on the different projects they have done. As a company, they are really proud of these, so if you can find other interesting projects that they've launched/been a part of - these are worth mentioning!

Also, as ridiculous as it sounds, you must answer the question in simple terms. Easiest way to do this (particularly in the phone interview) is to regurgitate the question back to the interviewer as part of your answer. It has to be clear to the interviewer that you're answering the question and if you jump ahead into a sophisticated answer, they won't be able to tick the box that says you've answered the question!

During the assessment centre, HR will do everything to make you change your opinions over situational questions. The key is to never back down with your decision, whatever it is, there's a reason to why you decided to do something. When you have made that decision you should back it up and prove to HR you will stick with your decision. Even if after a few explanations with HR, you start doubting your answer. You shouldn't doubt your answer and decisions.

Be sure that you want to work in technology - the vast majority of Accenture's projects are in that area, whether the specific role is techy or not. There has been a drive in recent years to expand the strategy practise, but I believe this is to a large extent a way of leveraging Accenture's technology expertise.

In the actual application, I found the key was to know what you're applying for. Some applicants think of Accenture as just another name on a long list of management consultancies, but make sure that you know about the character of the company. Application Advice:

Research the industry. All throughout the process you will be asked about the company, its clients, the work it does, the directions it is moving in and why. Research all the publically available Accenture documents you can (for example the 'Technology Vision' for that year). Also try and relate experiences in your life to Key Competencies, be they part-time work, internships or university clubs/socieities. All top companies look for candidates to not only demonstrate how they have certain key competencies (google them, they're quite generic across all grad jobs), but also how well you can articluate those experiences and personal qualities.

Interview Advice:

If you have researched the company and prepared your competencies, you're half way there. Further to this, they key to interviews/assessment centres is how you conduct yourself. Accenture are looking for a type of person, who fits with the company ethos, and who can work as part of a team of people, as ultimately, thats what consultancy is all about: teamwork.

Make sure you get your points across in interviews/group tasks, but don't be too pushy. You need to be able to listen as well as talk, considering all the facts and opinions available and then come to a reasoned conclusion. If you get the balance between being respectful but assertive right, you'll be fine.

This is a brilliant first step on the career path. It has great benefits but the greatest benefit is the focus on your career. This is a place to work when you are willing to get stuck in and put yourself about, and the benefits for doing so are huge in terms of your career. If you can prove you have all the basic skills, that you will apply yourself, and then go that extra mile, you will help to prove you are the sort of candidate that Accenture are after.

Application Advice:

Get your mum to read it. If she bursts out laughing, don't include that bit. Or re-word it. I think we went through 7 drafts of my application in the end. Every change was only minor and we only spent an hour or two on it, but it was definitely important to keep reviewing it. Otherwise I have no idea. I applied on a spur-of-the-moment "I really need a job right now", so I can't really remember how it went.

Interview Advice:

It sounds overstated, but relax and be yourself. We were told in our first day that we were picked because we were liked, and that comes from showing who you are. In my interview I mentioned that I liked empire-building computer games and linked that to why I decided to apply for the job. The fact that I play those games probably didn't help me in the slightest, but the fact that I was willing to show I have interests outside of work probably helped a lot. Don't necessarily try to take charge in the team projects in your application. Our team did fantastically well because we worked together to let everyone have their moment to speak and share ideas, allocating each of us 5 minutes to present each before having 5-10 minutes to discuss the answer to our problem after that. In contrast, the other team in my application group spent most of their time shouting over each other trying to be heard. Showing you can work well with everyone else but still being unafraid to make your points known is very important.

In my experience Accenture employees are consistently friendly, helpful and supportive, and the best at what they do!

In the interview/assessment stage, simply be yourself. Do your research, find out about the company, and really -want- the role. The more I realized what Accenture did, the more I wanted to be a part of the company.

Be prepared to do something you don't like and then have the initiative to move into something that you do. I have a background in history and human rights, worked for NATO, and love reading about sustainability, the evolution of rights, and economic inequality. And here, I've ended up in banking. Though this isn't a role I want to stay in for long, I also know that the skills I gain in this role could very well come in handy down the road. So I'd advise everyone to show real flexibilty and open-mindedness regarding the roles offered.

Interview Advice:

It's easy to go into the interview planning to emphasise what you know about industries, technologies, or solving business problems. However, all of this is less important than how interested you are in Accenture and consulting, and how much you're willing to learn. Even senior managers that have been employed at Accenture for over a decade might find themselves approaching a new project without knowing anything about the subject area. In these cases, it is the ability and willingness to learn new things quickly, to ingratiate yourself by getting stuck into projects with wider teams, and to maintain a positive outlook and confidence in facing the unknown which will really make you stand apart from other interviewees.
