Do your research on where you want to apply - it is not necessarily clear as a student what the different groups do, so it is important that you understand what you are applying for, and that it is right for you. Else, be open, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable about your chosen area.

Listen carefully to the instructions (I completed 3 questions rushed when 2 were requested), be friendly and enthusiastic. You want to be someone that the interviewers would want to work with, and so show that you are knowledgeable, but also are warm and open.

Application Advice:

Do not approach this company via the online recruitment/HR operated portal. Find out who the decision makers are in each office and contact them directly. I was receiving emails rejecting me for jobs with this company for months after I became an employee. You are unlikely to be able to sell yourself through the online application route, nor can anyone else make sensible judgements about your interest or aptitude based on such a crazy method of 'screening'.

Interviewees will be validating your competencies as mentioned in your application but don't forget the interviews are equally if not more so about your character and seeing if you would be a good 'fit' for the team/culture. Finally it is important that you ask questions so you can assess yourself if the organisation, team/culture and role would be a good fit for you and what you hope to achieve in the future.

Application Advice:

Don't rush the application, take time to read through every question and think about your answers. Also don't be afraid to say what aspects of your university course you like the most and some that your not so keen on. Its very important to get a job after university but ensure that you apply for the role that suits you and that you will enjoy. If you apply for a position that you don't really want it will show and it will also show if you rush through your application or use generic copied and pasted answers. Ensure you are specific to each company. It's better to do a few good applications than lots of rushed and vague applications.

Interview Advice:

Be confident, be honest but also don't be afraid to show off a bit and sell yourself. Think of everything you have to offer the company before hand and run through a good few practice questions. It's very important that you research the company before you go for an interview as I think in any interview you are always asked what you know about the company. Ensure that you know what position you are applying for and what this involves. Take along relevant work examples that you have done throughout university and perhaps a summer work placement (though remember to check with your boss at your work placement as the work you have completed may be confidential).

Gaining soft skills such as communication and teamwork is also very important. This will give you experiences to fall back on when it comes to your interview. People tell you this all the time at university but it really is true.

Interview Advice:

My interview was quite relaxed. Whoever is interviewing you will already know a lot about your achievements at uni and your work history so the purpose of the interview is more for them to chat to you and find out more about who you are so they can work out if you are right for the company and will fit in within the team.

The transportation department is interesting and a whole lot of projects are available to get your teeth into both here and abroad. My main advice is that you should get yourself any engineering related experience and find ways to independently prepare yourself for the working environment in terms of CSCS, PTS etc.

Remember that everyone has a degree and you need to find ways to tailor yourself to the job you want. It's all about giving yourself that competitive advantage!.

Interview Advice:

Undoubtedly you will be asked about your experience and you will find a lot of materials online about how to answer the typical questions. One thing to bear in mind is not to over prepare. Bear in mind that you've got the experience and you don't need to recite everything as you've written it in your preparation essay.

Let things flow naturally so that the interviewer can get an idea of who you are.
