Application Advice:
It is unusual that when applying for graduate schemes you feel if you don't get one, then how will you get any? But it is true that each company is looking for a certain type of person not just what grades or experience you have. For instance 4 R&D graduates were recruited in my year and we all have a very similar approach to structuring our work and dealing with people and teams.
Interview Advice:
For the R&D graduate scheme there was a face to face technical interview, which was mainly a discussion about my university masters project and a bit related to paint (but they don't expect you to know everything about paint straight away). A week or so later there was a 2 day assessment centre which was quite exhausting, involving presentations, interviews, group exercises etc.

Go for it, use your broader experiences, try not to apply the same way you are applying everywhere else but be innovative
Interview Advice:
Standard questions which you can easily answer based on the S.T.A.R. approach (look it up!). A lot of competition at the final assessment center. Beware of other candidates - they WILL try to undermine you if it increases their chances. Do not do the same (can be seen negatively) but be ready to defend yourself and fight for your chance.
