Application Advice:

Think of the way your university career has developed your skills set and match those examples with Alfa's competencies.

Interview Advice:

Do your research. Understand what Alfa does, who the clients are and what happens during the software lifecycle.

Application Advice:

My advice is as follows:
- Research. Do a lot of research surrounding the company. There is loads of publicly available material out there in regards to the company, its culture and what it's like working here.

- Be honest. From my application procedure, it was clear to me that the company was not looking for the best coder in the world with a tech background, instead, I elaborated on my genuine interest in the field even with no prior background in it.

- Reach out to recent graduate joiners and ask them about the application and interview process

Interview Advice:

- Practice your answers to known interview questions (you can make some assumptions on which questions are likely to come up, i.e. why do you want to work for us?)
- Reach out to recent graduate joiners and ask them about the application and interview process

Interview Advice:

Spend time learning about the Asset Finance industry and understand basic terms such as Finance Lease and Operating Lease. Ability in computer programming is initially non-essential, but it is important to show willingness to learn and ability to solve problems.

Application Advice:

Write a thorough cover letter, this is your chance to show off why you are a good candidate for the role. It is also a way to stand out from others, so include interesting facts about yourself that make you a more interesting candidate.

Interview Advice:

Don't be afraid to show interests outside of work, Alfa wants people who are good at communicating and the ability to make conversation is a huge asset in consultancy. So show Alfa you have interesting things to talk about. Take your research into the industry seriously. They will ask you questions about asset finance, so be ready for that.

Application Advice:

Alfa are not just looking for graduates straight from university. I had graduated 2 years ago and a lot of colleagues are the same, career changers, studied arts degrees or have done PhDs. I would recommend applying from all different backgrounds.

Interview Advice:

Cheesy but be yourself. Alfa doesn't need you to have known you want to be a software developer at a FinTech from birth. All they want are intelligent, ambitious graduates who they can train and who would be suitable for meeting clients etc. I believe they appreciated me for me and what I could bring and didn't want a textbook computer science grad.

Application Advice:

On LinkedIn, find someone who works at the company and ask about the process! Also, learn about the Asset Finance industry and see if it is an industry you want to work in. The company is great but the industry may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Interview Advice:

They will ask questions, but it is not a grilling so just be yourself.
And ask questions back! It shows you have done your research and are genuinely interested in the company.

Really know your stuff about the asset finance industry.
Have something you're passionate about, other than academics, that you can talk about and bring to Alfa (e.g. volunteering).

- Research the asset finance industry and how different products are used in the industry.
- Look into software implementation: how long does it take? what stages are there? etc.
- Learn about Alfa, where they operate, the markets they are in and how they implement software.
- Show a passion for technology and learning, which can be based around something you've done in the past or are doing at the moment.

Interview Advice:

- Do your homework: research the asset finance industry and Alfa.
- Be ready for tough questions, both about the industry and about you personally. Research questions that have been asked in the past and generic interview questions so that you are ready.

Best:

In no particular order:

- Culture
- Great training scheme
- Salary + Benefits
- Environment
- Location
- Open door policy (I bump into the CEO at least once a week)
- Potential to work abroad (Implementation)

Worst:

This is by no means the end of the world, but I wanted to work in Product Engineering but the demand was more on the Implementation (Consulting) side. However, I have been assured that over time I will have the opportunity to veer into product engineering and in the meantime there are some technical roles available on the implementation side also.

Best:

Fantastic open, collaborative company culture and great colleagues.
Interesting, varied and challenging work with brilliant training opportunities.
Great social events, CSR and environmental awareness.

Worst:

Although you do get input on the kind of work you'd like to be doing, work is driven by demand so sometimes you may find yourself having to move team or do tasks that would not have been your preference.

Best:

The culture is great here and the company does a lot to look after its employees compared to other places I have worked. They have recently re-imagined the company roles and career paths as well and I have a clearer picture of how I might progress moving forward.

Worst:

I don't really have visibility of how pay progresses as I go further in the company.
