Allianz Underwriting Graduate Scheme
at Allianz Insurance

Employer: Allianz Insurance

About the Scheme

At Allianz, we give our Underwriting graduates unrivalled exposure and experience. They work at the very heart of our business - where we evaluate risks so we can choose if, how, when and at what premium we’ll insure. Over the two years you’ll be fully supported to take on real work and responsibilities as you work alongside our expert underwriters to develop innovative insurance solutions that fully meet the needs of our customers in this ever changing world.

We have a large and varied customer base, so you could be arranging insurance policies for hotels, breweries, listed buildings, motor fleets, construction projects, sports arenas, or even pets. You’ll gain a huge breadth of experience and will specialise in particular business areas, such as personal lines, engineering, small and medium enterprises (SME) or corporate business.

What you’ll be doing

We’ve developed two types of two year placements on this scheme for you to choose from, depending on your interests, aspirations and skills - Trading Underwriting or Technical Underwriting.

Trading Underwriting  - you’ll establish positive relationships with brokers to create new business opportunities, develop existing relationships and renew existing policies, taking charge of your own cases and building up your authority levels to handle ever increasing and complex risk. You’ll need to develop your excellent relationship building skills to establish close and long lasting relationships with your broker contacts. We have trading opportunities in our Maidstone and Lancaster offices; you’ll spend a year in each location and work on our small and medium enterprise business area.

Technical Underwriting -you’ll work alongside our Technical Underwriters and Pricing Specialists, helping to develop our underwriting and pricing strategy across a variety of lines of business, such as home, motor, pets and legal protection. You’ll work on new product design to make sure we meet the changing needs of our customers. You’ll also be involved in working with some of our trading and corporate partners to help ensure that Allianz delivers excellent customer service and maintains strong business relationships.  You’ll use your excellent analytical and mathematical skills to evaluate risks to help develop these key strategies, to ensure that we continue to grow the business profitably. Based in Guildford, you’ll need to be flexible in order to spend time in our Bristol office too.

Underwriting is at the heart of any insurance company, so developing your skills in this core area during either placement opens the door to a whole range of opportunities - Senior Underwriter, Technical Management,, Pricing, Account Management - all with the potential to develop into senior leadership roles. Equally you could pursue a career in Risk Surveying, Sales or Operations. The opportunities are as varied and broad as the business and your aspirations!

Support, training and progress

Allianz has a strong reputation for supporting students in their studies. You’ll be assigned dedicated study days and the funding you need to successfully complete the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) Advanced Diploma in Insurance (ACII). In addition to your CII qualification you’ll also complete Allianz’s market-leading Underwriting Academy. Once you’ve qualified you’ll have the opportunity to attend development programmes with your peers, as well as opportunities to meet and learn from colleagues across the Allianz Group.

You’ll have direct access to our buddying and mentoring schemes, which are a great way to make connections throughout the business and to learn more about our work. In addition, you’ll have opportunities to visit our key stakeholders and we’ll also put you in touch with other Allianz graduates, so that you can share your experiences with your peers and build a network of connections with other business managers of tomorrow.
