Interview Advice:

Again, be yourself and be relaxed. It is not a formal working environment so the interviews should not be too formal, more like a conversation. The interviewer just needs to enjoy talking to you - it is less about what you say and more about how you say it and how you 'turn up'

Application Advice:

Don't write or say what you think the answer is, or what you feel they want to hear. At this entry level, you aren't expected to know the answers but you are supposed to be able to convey your personality - so be honest.

Interview Advice:

Obvious questions are adverts you like, or thoughts of current discussions in the industry, or commenting on your CV and skills. But I was also asked obscure things like my favorite film, where I saw myself in 10 years time, what I did for pleasure / what my interests were.

Account Executive, Account Management at AMV BBDO
Read the full review »

Application Advice:

This industry is different to many and in my opinion embraces people for who they are. Therefore when applying the questions are intended to highlight what makes you an individual as opposed to reeling off how much work experience you have/ all the achievements obtained. I'd therefore advise candidates to be their complete self no matter how quirky that might be!

Interview Advice:

When attending the interview, it's always good to be as confident as possible and aware of what is going on in wider society not just advertising. I'd suggest reading the news right up to the day of the interview and having on opinion on everything.

Account Executive, Account Management at AMV BBDO

Application Advice:

Be yourself. Try to stand out (not just for the sake of standing out though). Do not start your first answer with a generic opening - cut to the chase. Show your knowledge and interest in advertising, but don't forget about your personality.

Interview Advice:

It's even more important that you be yourself during the interview. Be prepared, but not too rehearsed or robotic. Learn about AMV, the clients and the work. Be interested in advertising and show it.

Account Executive, Account Management at AMV BBDO

Application Advice:

If applying for the grad scheme, take your time in choosing the questions that best represent. Do your research before you start writing and be sure to write about topics that you're passionate about/know a lot about, as you will be asked about them in detail at interview.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself, as cliched as it sounds. And remember to work as a team with others, because you're judged on how much of a team player you are, as well as your own individual skills.

Application Advice:

Don't regurgitate case studies. Agencies work best when they have a diverse range of people with unique, interesting perspectives that bring new ideas to the table. Stand by your take on things and don't be scared to defend it.

Application Advice:

Try and stand out and be interesting, rather than listing a long-list of your life achievements. Remember, you're applying to join an ad agency, not a bank!

Interview Advice:

Study some current ad's, both made by the agency and by other agencies, so you have context to talk about.

Other than that, be nice and polite - always goes down well!

Account Executive, at AMV BBDO

Application Advice:

Be yourself, try to grasp the culture that runs through the agency ("when in doubt be nice") and relax as much as you can! You need to make yourself interesting in the initial application, and from there it is a case of making a genuine human impression. Be polite, chatty, bright-eyed and open and you should go a long way. Recognize your achievement in getting through to the latter rounds, and harness that confidence without ever letting it tumble into arrogance! Arrogance is the big no-no here.

Be a communicator and a radiator in the social and group situations, and always consider your points of view, and the manner in which their communication reflects on you - don't talk over others, undermine them or be needlessly controversial. Have a point of view, but make sure it is gently and considerately offered.

And then the obvious bits - know about AMV, know about the industry, know about the future.

Account Executive, Account Management at AMV BBDO

Application Advice:

Make sure you understand what you want to get out of the role. The industry isn't for everyone and the learning process is a steep one.

Interview Advice:

Do your research on the industry, company and its campaigns. You need to come across as personable and a good cultural fit (friendly and accommodating whilst having an edge to you), whilst knowing the work inside out.

Application Advice:

Be yourself, this job is for people who are genuinely passionate and have a collaborative mindset. Get lots of work experience and be diligent about the work environment that you'd like to be a part of.

Interview Advice:

Smart casual attire. As well as having campaign ideas that you've seen, draw from personal/life experiences that show your new found opinions on the world/society/people.

Application Advice:

Try to answer the questions in a way that:
- Shows off your interests and things that make you different
- Let's your creative side show
- Isn't too formal
- Shows off your point of view

Interview Advice:

Be yourself! Remember that you'll be speaking to normal people who have probably grown tired of asking the same questions to lots of candidates, so it's refreshing to talk to someone who seems genuinely enthusiastic and has interesting things to say.

Account Executive, at AMV BBDO

Application Advice:

Get to know as much as you can about not just the work at AMV's, but the people and the culture. The application process should be as much about you finding out if AMV is the right fit for you, as it is AMV finding out if you're the right fit for here.

Interview Advice:

Try to take as much away from the interviews as possible, especially the full day second round. It's a great learning curve for future interviews.

Account Executive, at AMV BBDO

Application Advice:

- Be honest and yourself - they can see straight through any fabrications and would like people to be themselves.
- Be creative, if you want to do something unusual in the application then go for it. I really feel that creativity is key for this role.

Interview Advice:

- Be friendly and willing to listen.
- Be as relaxed as possible - the environment at AMV is very friendly and not very corporate. Don't feel you need to wear a fancy suit, wear what you like to wear.
- No one is trying to trick you. People in the agency are just interested in the way you think. There is no wrong answer as long as you support your ideas and are willing to discuss them further.

Application Advice:

Write in your own voice, this isn't an intense corporate application. They want to know who you are as a person, not your achievements or your grades, but your point of view. Be honest. If you read it back and it doesn't sound exactly like how you speak, start again.

Interview Advice:

Watch lots of adverts before you come in. What makes them good, what makes them bad, do you think they work? What do you think the strategy behind the idea was? They aren't trying to trick you at the interviews by showing you really obscure adverts, they want to know if you can interpret them. Don't pretend you love an advert just because we have done it - if you don't like it tell us why and where you think it went wrong!
The biggest thing the interviewers are asking themselves is if they could sit next to you on a flight for three hours. This is an interview to get to know you, and that matters much more than your knowledge of advertising theory or the history of the company (but obviously this helps as well!)

Project manager, Project management at AMV BBDO
Read the full review »

Application Advice:

This is not an application for PWC or a bank.. be yourself and write how you talk. It's great to have achievements but let them speak for themselves and use the process for the company to see who you really are.

Interview Advice:

The obvious things are

- Know a lot about the company and why you want to work here specifically.

- Have answers for all advert related questions (e.g. what's the best one you've seen recently? what's your favourite one that we've done? what's your worst one? what's the best digital ad you've noticed? and WHY for all of them!)

- Why you are right for the job?

It's less competency based than other jobs and more about making you think on your feet. So be prepared to answer questions that you haven't actually prepared for and maybe analyse an ad that they give to you.

Junior Strategist, Strategy at AMV BBDO

Application Advice:

Have an opinion - on advertising, on culture, on everything
Be interested and interesting
Demonstrate a love of creativity
Make yourself familiar with our work

Interview Advice:

Prepare for standard questions about advertising (favourite? most hated?)
Understand that most questions you can't prepare for
The questions are to see how you think, not whether you get it right or not - it's about judging the fit with the agency culture

Application Advice:

Be yourself, try to show your interviewers something they wouldn't be able to know from just reading your CV.

Account Executive, at AMV BBDO

Application Advice:

Enjoy it - it might be cliche, but those who will succeed in this industry are those who would enjoy doing an application like this. It allows you to think differently and be more creative, and is different from any other application. Do not be pretentious or alternative for the sake of it, be yourself.

Interview Advice:

They are never trying to catch you out, but they will want you to be able to think on your toes. At AMV BBDO, it always feels like the interviewer is on your side, so some of the horror stories you hear about advertising interviews certainly do not apply here. Do not overdress but definitely don't underdress. Be relaxed, keep calm, and enjoy yourself - they want to find people who they will enjoy working with and being around day to day.

Application Advice:

They always say at their open days that they're looking for people who are bright and nice. You need to demonstrate through everything your answers that you're both.

Be yourself on your application form, but don't feel you need to be ridiculously quirky (unless, of course, you are!). There's a difference between coming across as 'memorable' and as somewhat risky.

And most importantly, make sure you come across on paper like you do in person. There's no point using words you wouldn't normally, or using a tone or voice which is very different from your own. You're likely to stick out at interview stage if so, and people will get confused as to who you really are!

Interview Advice:

Be honest with your answers - don't feel you need to give the answers you necessarily want to hear. So, for example, don't feel like you need to pretend you're really knowledgeable about how the industry works, etc - unless, of course, you actually are. I think they're just looking for people that demonstrate a passion to learn about (and work in) it.

Have four or five adverts up-your-sleeve which you feel confident talking/expressing an opinion about (it's better if they aren't made by AMV, I reckon). A couple of your favourite ads (and why) - try not to make it too obvious unless you have something really interesting to say about it - and then one or two that you think are really bad/problematic (and why). And definitely one or two examples of 'integrated' campaigns that pan across different types of media.

Try as much as you can to just enjoy the interviews. They're looking for normal people with lives outside of advertising, so don't feel afraid to talk about what else makes you tick. That could be the thing that makes you stick in their minds.

Account Executive, Mercedes at AMV BBDO

Application Advice:

Be yourself - they're looking for people who are personable. The AMV grad scheme motto is 'hire for enthusiasm, train for skill' and I think this is very true. At the same time, make sure you have a genuine interest in advertising and show this in your application as best you can. It will quickly become very obvious in the interview rounds if you do not have an interest in the industry.
You should also really understand the roles available to you. It's not just Account Management, although it may seem that way. AMV also takes on graduate planners and graduate project managers if you express and interest in these departments and seem fit for the role.

Interview Advice:

Know the agency - both in terms of its work and in terms of its 'ethos'.
If you have both of these things down you're likely to have quite a bit of relevant stuff to talk about!
Don't be nervous, the interviewers aren't trying to trick you - some of the questions may be a bit left-field though, so prepare for these!
Ask questions too!

Account Executive, at AMV BBDO

Application Advice:

Be willing to work hard play hard.
AMV demands a great deal of your time and commitment so demonstrate you are willing to get the job done no matter what.
This hard work is always rewarded so its worth it.

Interview Advice:

Question the question. This isn't about being argumentative, but show that you are not an automaton regurgitating the same answers as everyone else. If you think a question has a hole in it or is vague or makes an assumption, say so. Show independent thought.

Application Advice:

Take time over your written application. Make sure your personality comes through, but don't over-do it - it's obvious when you're faking it. It's difficult if you're still at university and are amidst writing dissertations/essays, but make sure you don't write in academic speak - it's not the language we use day to day and it'll make the readers' life harder.

Interview Advice:

It's all about preparation. Make sure you know the clients/work/campaigns/new business wins/Senior management etc. Have a favourite campaign and a worst from the company up your sleeve. Learn the ad-speak/lingo. Have fun and enjoy it!

Account Executive, Dixons at AMV BBDO

Application Advice:

Do the work, so that you can relax, be yourself and be confident.
Do as much work experience as possible, in the best places possible, find out your strengths and weaknesses in the role you are applying for.
Do the research on the company, know their work, have an opinion.
Once you have all the knowledge you need about yourself and about the company, be honest in your application and your interview, if you are being honest there is no need to be nervous, you can be yourself.

Interview Advice:

Be respectful, but be interested. Ask questions. Open up, let them meet the real you so that you can form a good relationship.

Account Executive, London at AMV BBDO

Application Advice:

Take an interest in the industry as a whole and not just work AMV has done. Look into case studies, awards and great work. Also, know what kind of person you are. If you work best in a high pressure/stress environment as some people do then AMV isn't the place for you. Whilst we do have difficult days the atmosphere here is much more focused on getting the best out of people through encouragement rather than pressure.

Lovely people. Opportunities to work on a diverse range of businesses. Job Security. Freebies. Proud to represent a prestigious name.

Worst:

Quite cliquey. Can be slow-moving on projects. Sometimes default into traditional work rather than thinking new. Diversity isn't exactly evident (Although something the agency says its working to changing..).
