What are the best and worst things about your job?

I'm a graduate in control of a full project acting as the PM for a client which is amazing. The responsibility you are offered is second to none, and the team is so supportive. My favourite part of the work is negotiating with stakeholders and coming to agreement on issues, it's the reason I got into the job, and there is enough depth of knowledge to get stuck in and learn. I am always learning, there is very few quiet days where I can't be picking up some useful knowledge about the industry or talking with colleagues and learning how they are approaching their own issues.

What are the best and worst things about your job?

The best part of the role is being part of a large team and company as this makes a huge difference to when you first start and meet new people.

Other positives about the role would be training alongside the degree. I will be gaining valuable experience and a vocational award which will be highly demanded within the industry.

Included in my programme is being put through the process to become a charted surveyor of the Royal Institute of Charted Surveyors.

The clients that I work with are also benefits of the job, to tell others that I work with such well known organisations gives me great satisfaction.

Application Advice:

Be honest, If you want to work in a specific role and have aptitude regardless of what degree you have, get involved and speak to people. Arcadis have quality people and not everyone has come into the roles through traditional routes. Especially in Project management, its more about your composure as a person and how you approach situations which can be a really good base line to build on, and Arcadis will help you build your knowledge base.

Interview Advice:

There are several stages of the assessment, a video interview which everyone is nervous over as it can be a little awkward but is well structured to get a good idea of the people applying. There was an assessment day with different activities to assess how we approached situations with an interview at the end. The interview was conducted by a Senior Project Manager, and the first 5 minutes were your standard interview questions, Why do you want to do this, what experience do you have etc, but the remainder was a free flowing conversation that took all pressure away. If you can get into a room with a complete stranger and put yourself at ease with the interviewer and have a good conversation you will have no problems. All the talk was relevant to the work and I gained knowledge and was able to begin building a network from the day. Even if I hadn't been successful it was a very valuable experience.

Application Advice:

Ensure that your CV is clear and concise with an interesting flair. A hiring engineer will have minimal time to review graduate CV's so keeping it simple (format) with memorable aspects may help you standout amongst the crowd.
The CV is an opportunity to present yourself in the best possible way - be sure to take advantage of this.

Interview Advice:

Research topics that are applicable to the role of application, this may be useful to reference in interviews and may help build confidence on the subject matter. For example; I understood that the role involved mechanical engineering in the water treatment, so I revised theory gained from university (pump curve analysis) along with some basic process theory (water treatment process). This background knowledge may be helpful, but keep in mind the best trait to convey during an interview is your eagerness to learn more - showing a hiring engineer that you want to apply yourself.

Application Advice:

Read about the company profile, including any sister or parent companies (ie Arcadis and it's other OpCos), as the core values are a big part of what makes EC Harris and Arcadis unique within the market.
Research the global construction and consultancy market and client demands. There is a big drive towards improving global collaboration within EC Harris and Arcadis, in order to respond better to client's ever increasing growing global requirements.

Interview Advice:

Be confident, but don't lie as you won't get away with it in front of an expert. Make sure you know about the company as well as just the role, as this will inform why you are specifically applying for an position at EC Harris/Arcadis and not one their competitors (even if you are applying elsewhere as well!).

Application Advice:

Take your time going through the application. Get someone to review your answers to each section. I did this by working on an offline draft.

Interview Advice:

Be well prepared for the interview - look into the companies history as well as recent news i.e contract wins / awards. Also think about what they are looking for and then use that to inform your approach. A good way is to pay attention to the original job advertisement.

Application Advice:

make sure you put all your best qualities as a person, achievements and how you could benefit this company.

Interview Advice:

be yourself, don't try and act up and show off- sometimes this comes across as cocky and arrogant. Don't be scared to ask questions about job roles, future opportunities & your potential career path.

Application Advice:

It is a good place to start, learn from very great professionals.
I would suggest applying and first understanding the company view of the built environment, objectives, clients...

Once you get into the company I would suggest to ask for a mentor and have regular meetings with line manager in order to understand what are the milestones, expectations and requirements for a graduate.

Interview Advice:

The interview for graduates consists on an assessment day where they ask to demonstrate your potential. There are a lot of grads trying to get a position so I would suggest prepare the different fields covered but also not being nervous.

Fields covered are: personal presentation with Q&A, team case study, application of team outcomes to write an individual report and an interview one to one.
