How would you describe your job in 2-3 lines?
I undertake planning and delivery of railway track renewals. This requires ordering materials, understanding design drawings, planning and logistics, programming, resourcing, method statements, crane plans, risk assessments, surveying and monitoring quality of work on site.
What do you actually do on a day-to-day basis?
Plan for night works and prepare necessary information and resources for that. Plan for possessions and closures of the line and produce all necessary documentation, i.e. method statements, crane plans, programmes, materials ordering, preparing technical information. Interface with train operators, plant booking, procurement, London Underground, many other railway disciplines i.e. power and signals.
What are the main positives and negatives to your job?
Positive: variety of work in the office and on site.
Negative: lose out on personal time due to shift change overs and working unsociable hours.
What qualifications and skills are needed to be great at this job?
Ability to think laterally and overcome planning problems - look for opportunities and foresee issues. Good engineering judgement and attention to detail.
What hours do you actually work, on average? 8amto 4pm.
