Product Manager, BT One Collaborate at BT (British Telecom)

Application Advice:

The roles at BT vary tremendously. The company employs over 100,000 people worldwide, this means your experience will vary immensely. Most jobs are determined by their line manager, if you are lucky and get a good line manager, your development will be positive. The converse is also true, a bad manager means a horrible experience. Unfortunately, the latter is a very common occurrence in BT, not only for myself, but other graduates. Low level of responsibility, mundane, tedious work not befitting of a degree holder is commonplace in BT. With restricted opportunities to move in the company if you had wanted to change roles, or move teams is hard to happen.

Interview Advice:

Read as much as you can from the website, about your respective field. Try to understand the company culture, and what they do.

Business Graduate, Business and Public sector at BT (British Telecom)

Application Advice:

Look at the website, look online, do research. Don't just assume that BT is "consumer" focused. Look at what BT does with other businesses, and globally. Also be prepared to be flexible, and adapt quickly as things can change.

Interview Advice:

Whilst it is important to make sure you stand out as an individual - the assessment centre also features group work so make sure you demonstrate good team work.

Marketing Manager, Marketing at BT (British Telecom)

Application Advice:

BT is looking for more than the data about you on a sheet of paper, they are looking for a well-rounded candidate who has interests outside of the purely academic and who is able to demonstrate the positive impact these interests have had on their ability to work in a team, develop intellectual curiosity, independently learn a new skill, and so on. No matter what your interests, be confident and be willing to explain how you are a unique and brilliant candidate.

Interview Advice:

In the assessment centre, you will be provided with a variety of tasks that demonstrate your independent and collaborative working abilities. The most important quality here is your enthusiasm to tackle a problem and critical thinking skills to come up with an answer to an unforeseen puzzle in a short period of time, rather than your commercial abilities and specific knowledge of the role. I had very little commercial knowledge going into the assessment centre and role, but I made the best attempt I could to answer the questions and scenarios using what I knew and this was recognised and rewarded.

Regarding any questions based on your knowledge alignment - if you don't know the answer then don't be afraid to say that you don't know, instead try to elaborate on how you would go about learning the specified topic.

If you don't get the job by being yourself, that's okay; the job wasn't for you. Know that whatever you get in life is an opportunity to learn and improve yourself; appreciate it all.
-Try to make sure you have SEVERAL examples of times when you have applied various skills that you think you would need in the job (communication, teamwork, problem solving, etc.).
-Relax... Calm your breathing and meditate before/during/after you have your interviews, assessment centre, etc.

Application Advice:

If you don't have experience, do a free course online or a mini project to show your enthusiasm.

Interview Advice:

If you don't know an answer or are unable to complete a given task don't say you don't know or that you are unable to do it, but say what you do know and what you are able to do even if it isn't exactly (or nothing like) what they asked for. This at least shows that you know and are capable of doing something and perhaps what you bring might be better than what they were looking for.
Plus, there's a thin line between being desperate and eager in an interview and that line lies in your positivity. When you really want a job you're willing to do anything to get it, what you need to show is that you're happy to do it.

Application Advice:

Tailor your experience and skills to the job that you are applying for on your CV. List the skills and experiences you have, tell them how they are relevant to the job that you are going to do. Not only are you showing off your skills, but also showing that you understand the role and what will be expected of you.

Interview Advice:

Whatever you are telling the interviewer about yourself, always link it back to the job you have applied for. Learn as much as possible about the company before the interview. And not just the company but its competitors too. Don't be afraid to mention what the company is not so good at in the right circumstances as this may give you an opportunity to show the value you can bring. And as always, be yourself.

The grad scheme is looking for people who are capable of taking on leadership roles. BT has a focus on hiring/promoting people for management over raw technical ability - you'll need to demonstrate some kind of experience on your CV and the assessment centres are all geared towards people/business skills and are not technical.

Interview Advice:

There were no technical challenges/interviews to complete during my hiring process - don't expect to be hired on your technical capability alone. Also try and be calm, everyone is nervous on the day and the interviewers are very understanding of this. If you mess up a question, take a breath and you can even ask if you can start your answer again.

Don't just write about your experience, write how you worked with other people to complete projects and overcame obstacles. If you lack work experience, why not talk about volunteer work you've been doing or projects you've been working on?

The recruiters are looking for people who can pick things up quickly, are eager to learn and are enthusiastic about the role they're applying for.

Interview Advice:

The most important thing: Relax! The belief at BT is that if we pressure you on the day we're not going to get a good representation of who you are or what you can contribute to the company, so while you should dress smart the atmosphere is laid back. There will be current graduates present to put you at ease and answer you questions, and we usually lay on cookies and hot beverages.

The format changes each year, but at the assessment centre expect to be assessed both individually and how you work as part of a group. There is no 'quota' for who has to pass and fail - the interviewers pick as many as they want, and we host assessment centres until all the positions are filled.

Read up on the company, what we do and our corporate values. Ensure you convey your passion, what you can bring to BT and be really clear on why you want to join us. Make sure you fully explain why you are applying for the specific role you've applied for. Think about where you see yourself in 2, 5, 10+ years.

In short, show in clear terms that you really WANT the job! Sell yourself. All of this will set you up nicely for your interviews and assessment centres.

Interview Advice:

At your assessment centre you are ALWAYS being watched, assessed and judged although you may not realise it. Your graduate buddy on the day may also have been asked to monitor you and provide feedback to the assessors later.

Ensure you behave assertively with confidence and speak up during group exercises. Sitting there doing or saying nothing will count against you more than talking nonsense non-stop would.

Don't try and blag technical points during your line manager interview. They'll spot this a mile off, so it's better to be honest and upfront if you genuinely don't know or can't answer.

Don't be afraid to ask the interviewer to clarify a question they've asked if you don't quite understand. Interviews are a two-way street and it's a chance for you to ask questions of your own and to learn more about us.

Nobody is there to deliberately trip you up. Assessment centres can actually be good fun, just relax and enjoy it!
