Industry: IT Development & Consulting Department: Salesforce Job Title: Salesforce Marketing Cloud Consultant

What are the best and worst things about your job?

Job has a very clear progression scheme. Salesforce is Salesforce, and its a piece of software.

Get good at Salesforce, learn what makes it tick and how to solve problems and you're on track to climbing up.

Soft consulting skills, presentation ability, networking and the like are all incredibly important, but there's something incredibly reassuring in the fact that just learning is rewarding in and of itself.

Problem A? Solution A. It takes time, many meetings, and even more design amends, but there are non-ambiguous solutions to clearly defined problems, and figuring them out is very fulfilling.

There's always something to learn and the path to learning it is very clear. Besides, Certifications also provide an easy way to quantify progression - especially for graduates who still need to develop softer skills and need more project experience.

Industry: IT Development & Consulting Department: Custom Software Development Job Title: Software Engineer

What are the best and worst things about your job?

Great team that supports your growth and learning. Knowledge-sharing is encouraged, and they care about onboarding newcomers.
When a project is away from home, they acknowledge that this can have a negative impact on your work-life balance and they encourage flexible/remote working with the clients and their employees.

What are the best and worst things about your job?

Travel - you'll likely work all around the country, and have opportunities to work abroad. The expense policy is fair, you have enough allowance for decent accommodation and meals out.

Flexible working - Can depend on the client you're working with, but a lot of roles allow for working from home/base location regularly, which helps balance out the travel.

Work/Life balance - I'm able to leave work at the office at 5.30, there's not been any creep into my personal time. A lot of projects have been very accommodating with travel, allowing late starts/ early finishes on days when you travel.

What are the best and worst things about your job?

- Project-based work means each day is different, and generally it doesn't get monotonous like other jobs. Project roles can last anywhere from 1-18 months.
- Working with different people on each project
- Flexibility - if you need to work from home for whatever reason and it doesn't impact your ability to do your job, most of the time it's fine.
- The way expenses work means that I don't pay anything for travelling to work - I live close to my "home" office so all my travelling is paid for by clients
- High salary with rapid progression

What are the best and worst things about your job?

Capgemini overall has been such an incredible place for my development. I have progressed very quickly, with 2 promotions within 2 years being on the graduate programme and I put that down to all the amazing support I have received from incredible professionals within the Organisation.

Capgemini has been fundamental in my growth and confidence all around. I now feel I can go into any role and perform regardless of experience. I believe this confidence is down to the various roles I have performed, ranging from technical and business roles and the incredible mentors I have had. I have 5 mentors with different experiences who I regularly have catch-up sessions with. My mentors ensure I am happy and progressing in alignment with my competencies and objectives.

The work life/balance is amazing backed up with many giving back opportunities and a great graduate community which all graduates meet up during socials. As a giving back example, I have joined an initiative in leading a group of graduates in organising and arranging various events such as careers fair events at my old University which has been such an amazing experience and well recognised within Capgemini.

In summary, Capgemini provides such an amazing platform for anyone determined to succeed with their career choice, backed up by the challenging opportunities, amazing support and networks.

What are the best and worst things about your job?

Great group of colleagues on my first project. The teams work well as a group and I can easily spend days on a project with the team as no one behaves in a negative manner. The pay is good too but that can be offered in a bad job too but at Capgemini there are many financial opportunities to grow along with advancement opportunities in the field of work.

Application Advice:

Find a referral. Reach out to someone from the DU on LinkedIn or find another graduate/someone who'd be willing to be your referral. Goes a long way to pushing your application to the top of the queue and making it visible. There are plenty of recruiting incentives within the company, so people will jump at the chance to referr a bright graduate.

Application consists of multiple stages and can feel quite rigorous. Be thorough with your paper applications when applying online. Try to have a referral if possible, but not necessary.

Situational Questionnaire is hard to prepare for and was mostly a common sense thing. Some specific questions required some degree of math (might want to remind yourself what the formula is to calculate compound interests and figure out original price values after tax if you've forgotten).

You might then have an interview or an "online interview" and assessment centre activity.

Online interview is not with a real person; its a set of pre-recorded questions with which you have 2 minutes to answer. Very rigid and not too natural, but the website has a "practice interview". Try to pocket answers for common questions and make them fit within a 2 minute time limit.

Assessment Centre will be group activities. Some groups will do better than others - and your group might not be the best - but that's fine. They're looking for both individual performance and cooperative skills. Have good chemistry with your team and highlight your personal qualities.

The full interview may happen if there are no Assessment Centre sessions running at the time or in your vicinity. Look at Interview Advice detailed for help with this.

Interview Advice:

Although I applied for a specialised role (CRM), I had made it clear from the beginning of the application process that I was not familiar with the platform. They were fine with this. Questions revolved mostly around soft skills and process knowledge:

How comfortable are you with presenting?
If a team member is failing to meet expectations, how do you handle them?
Are you familiar with Agile Methodology?
Do you have past experience that you believe is relevant for this position?
Why apply for this position in particular?

General consultant-skills related questions. Even if you're not familiar with tech/IT (which I was not, coming from a humanities), showing an understanding of consulting skills and making sure to bring on how your past projects/experiences support the skillset they're looking for should be enough.

Also, be creative. The best way to show you're comfortable with presenting is getting up and giving an actual presentation then and there. If they ask about Agile then explain the ways you use sprints and kanban boards in your own self-improvement.

Application Advice:

Show that you are interested in your own learning and growth. Mention situations where you have demonstrated their core values.

Interview Advice:

Ask lots of questions about the role, ask the interviewer questions about what they like and would improve about the role, just try to gain as much insight as possible into the role, the company and the people.
And show that you are eager to grow and learn.
The assessment centre focuses on how you work with others (as they all do), so listen to people and contribute what you can, but don't speak over others.

Application Advice:

The graduate scheme isn't rigidly structured, you're in charge of your own progression for the most part, so try and mention how you've set yourself goals in your professional/personal life.

Interview Advice:

They're looking for you to be someone they'd want to work with. The interview tasks don't necessarily have a right answer, but they want to see how well you participate in meetings/manage time etc.

Application Advice:

Be yourself. There are several stages including an assessment centre. For this role, Capgemini takes people from any degree so although your academic background adds to your application, they are looking for people who are energetic, motivated and ready to learn on the job.

Application Advice:

Take your time and ensure your application is well written and tailored to the role. Using a generic application you have sent to 10 other companies does not give the impression you really want the role/to work for the company.

Interview Advice:

Dress smart (tie not needed for men), be chatty and friendly, bring in outside knowledge to show you are well rounded/aware of what is happening in the world.

1-1 interview is based more on how you think you would act rather than the usual 'give an example of a time you...', allows you to be yourself more.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself - it is such a cliche statement but it is so important, this is the first time you will meet people from the business and you need to gauge if it is right for you, as well as the company assessing your strengths

Application Advice:

Read the questions provided carefully (if relevant) and begin by wireframing your answer rather than diving in - since there will probably be a word count it's important to lay out individual headings that address each part of each question, and then put the rest of the text in afterwards.

Interview Advice:

Make sure you research on questions often asked at interviews and create a spreadsheet of "STAR" examples - situation unfolding, task required, action taken, result seen. Do your best to memorise this and you can easily answer questions such as "tell me about a time when you failed to meet expectations" or similar. Have similar examples for relevant hard and soft skills.

Personal projects (especially ones relating to skills asked for in the job description) are a great way to flesh out short CVs. They're not looking for everything on the list but you should at least know what everything means and have done research on it.

Interview Advice:

It's an assessment day with a chance to ask both HR and someone in your field questions. There's a 1-2-1 interview and a team assessment as well. The hardest question I was asked was something like "Can you give me an example of a time when you've used enterprise data management tools?" or something similar. I didn't understand what it meant and the interviewer could only explain the question so much (for reference examples of databases, data visualisation or ETL tools were what he was looking for).

In addition to the usual sources of information about working at Capgemini (website, careers fair etc), I would highly recommend reading some of the blogs on the website before applying. The CDC blog in particular is fantastic for learning exactly what you will do as a consultant, the lessons learnt from others on the grad scheme and other hints/tips. It is written by CDCers (grad scheme). The capability teams also have blogs, so it's a great source to get an insight into the type of work the team does and the thought leadership on some of the main topics affecting that team.

Example blogs:

There is a strong emphasis on teamwork so make sure at the team exercise you assert your opinions without overpowering the rest of the group and take on board other people's opinions.

You will be given a case study to prepare for beforehand and I recommend you take the time to prepare this well. Make sure you can get the main points across in the time allocated for this exercise.

In addition to the case study you will be asked the standard competency questions which you can prepare for.

Take time to research the company and talk to some current grads, and work out what differentiates it from its competitors. The culture is surprisingly different and for some people it's exactly what they need to flourish, but others might prefer a more corporate and rigid structure.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself. Sorry to whip out a cliche, but half of the interview is about your competence and the other half is about your fit. If you fit the company culture then that is a big plus, if not then it doesn't really matter how great you do in the tests. This goes both ways - take the chance to ask as many questions as you can to find out about the company, as you need to decide if you want to work here.

Online Application: Take your time and be as honest as possible. If you are turned down at this stage it's because you either don't fit the personality profile of the company or because you don't meet the requirements.

Phone Interview: Was very straightforward, took around 30 minutes and had an answer saying I'd passed 2 hours later. Make sure you know about the Systems Development Lifecycle and can talk about things you have done in a given context (situation where you showed leadership, etc..)

Assessment Day: Split into four parts: Written test, Face-to-Face Interview, Role Play, Group Scenario.

Written test is straightforward. Verbal reasoning for Technology stream, Verbal and Numerical reasoning for Manangement Consulting stream.

Face-to-Face interview: Similar advice to the telephone interview. Be yourself and make sure you have examples to show off your personality and roundedness

Role Play (one-on-one): Varies from year to year, you are given the topic in advance for the tech stream and on the day for the management consulting stream. If on tech stream, make sure you prepare thoroughly and bring a 'wow factor'.

Group role play: Don't dominate the conversation, it's tempting to steal the spotlight but they want to see you working together and being 'collaborative'.

Interview Advice:

Be honest, show integrity and collaborative spirit, be passionate about the area of technology that interests you, have an understanding of some of their key projects within the Business Unit you are applying for. Application Advice:

Apply early
Be honest
Know the company inside out - what are the full range of services we offer, who are our competitors, what were our financials last year (how is the company performing as a whole), what do you think this role involves day to day
Focus on your achievements and give concrete examples - not just fluffy "we did this and then we achieved this" - great to show you worked as part of a team, but how did YOU actually add value to the team, what did YOU actually do
Personality as as important as qualifications - people being our main asset and it being a genuinely people focused culture, it's as important that you're a good fit personality wise and vice versa as all the skills you might bring. Know our values well (modesty, honesty, fun etc.) as that's exactly the kind of person Capgemini are looking for
Have an idea of your longer term career aspirations
Ideally talk to someone who has done the role in the company (try use your network/get in touch with someone on LinkedIn) - get the most accurate view of what it really is like

Interview Advice:

Much of the same as above
In the group exercise, be careful to achieve a balance between speaking up and voicing your opinion and listening and taking on board others' opinion and not taking over - this is key
Have questions for the interviewer too - try to think up challenging ones as well as just asking the generic qs.
Know your presentation well - e.g. if a case study and you mention a technology in your solution, really know why you've chosen cloud for example. Don't just read from a load of slides, how you present is very important
Be confident and if one area doesn't go well, don't fret, you can compensate for it by doing well in the other areas of the assessment centre - it's all taken into account
Practice for the numerical and verbal, no matter how confident you are in your ability, you're in a pressurised environment on the day so every bit of practice helps
Again, make sure your personality comes through - at the end of the day, you're going to need to be someone they'd like to work with!

Best:

Company culture, work-life balance and all-around support. The company itself has an emphasis on an accepting environment and there's a lot of freedom even as a graduate.

Naturally, as a consultancy, it all depends on the project you're on, but as a rule of thumb Fridays is a work from home day (really appreciated), they're forgiving of appointments/half-days/work from home so long as you're on track to meeting your expected number of billable days and are generous with funding if you have to work outside of your base location.

Overall people have been incredibly supportive all-around, with colleagues and "reviewers" (your line manager) being very open with advice and helping progress with certifications and professional goals. There's definitely a "pass it down" culture that attracts individuals with this sort of attitude.

Any problems have a clear escalation process and are handled as promptly as they can. A support network is definitely there if you're willing to reach out to it, and this supportive environment has been especially reassuring for a graduate on their first real job.

Worst:

Advancement is highly reliant on engaging with the company. It's a consultancy, so most of your work (as a consultant) is on Client Site.

You're expected to be able to manage both your Client/Project work as well as internal projects/initiatives.

Sometimes this is fine to balance. When its nearing important project deadlines, very hard to balance. Company does encourage work-life balance and this warrants respect, but it can feel at times that this focus on internal "objectives" for company progression can detract from the very real professional progression you make outside of it.

I believe this confidence is down to the various roles I have performed, ranging from technical and business roles and the incredible mentors I have made.

Authentic, generous, no bull***t company culture. Opportunities for growth and training. Ability to drive your career at your own pace (you can take on as much responsibility and as many opportunities as you want/can handle, but equally will get a lot of support if and when you need it). The people here are seriously great and I never thought I'd feel like this about a consulting company!

Worst:

Consulting is not for everyone - would not recommend if you don't enjoy travel, flexible working (in my experience Capgemini are willing to be pretty flexible with their employees re: working arrangements, but it's a two way street and you have to be prepared to offer flexibility during "crunch time"), or client facing work.
