Application Advice:

Consider the reasons you're applying for the role and whether those reasons are good enough for you to perform well at this role. Doing things for the wrongs reasons produces mediocre results.

Interview Advice:

Be honest, have confidence in self ability. Answer questions with what you believe to be right, not what is perceived to be.

Application Advice:

It would be most useful to have a stem subject, however if you have examples of where you have used technical skills that may be relevant (SQL, Java, TCL...) then I do not think a stem subject is mandatory.

Interview Advice:

Have examples ready for the prep questions with regards to support service (example of dealing with difficult people etc.). For the technical side, you do not need to know anything, just show your capability and willingness to learn.

Application Advice:

Support is split up into a variety of sub-departments, all which vary quite a lot in expected technical qualifications. If you're applying for a Graduate role, ensure that you highlight your Dissertation/3rd year project as this will provide a lot of leverage if you chose an interesting subject. This is essentially what got me the interview.

Interview Advice:

Do your research prior to the interview. This role tends to attract a lot of 'failed developers', so you need to give an indication that you're not applying because you weren't able to get a Development job.

Application Advice:

My application was pretty standard, didn't particularly tailor it to the role. Just make it a good one.

Interview Advice:

Find out what the company does beforehand, read up on them. Also, be relaxed. I've actually spoken to my manager, the guy that hired me, about why he was happy to hire me and he simply said "you were relaxed and easy to talk to, and passed the technical test". Also, don't be nervous about the technical test - it's as simple as it looks.

Interview Advice:

Don't try to prepare answers from advice you get online. Be careful, this might get you the job. Whether it will keep you at the job and if you enjoy it is another question.
Be yourself, answer truthfully and honestly. If the company don't want you, you probably don't want to work at that company. Your ideas of how work is should be close to those of the company.

Application Advice:

Do some research on how to make your CV attractive and concise - most universities offer services for this, or just google it.
If there's a coding test (i.e. for a developer) don't worry about optimising unless it says explicitly in the question. You might end up fiddling with a working solution so much that it no longer works (this happened to me - it didn't even compile in the end! I walked them through my thinking though when asked about it).

Interview Advice:

Don't try to blag anything in the interview, be honest if there's something you don't know. No one can know everything.
One of my answers to a situational question was literally "Well I'd probably just google how to do that" followed by what I'd look for and how I'd proceed after that - in a workplace environment you should use all the resources at your disposal.
Also ask them questions about details, even if you already know the details. People like talking about what they do, especially in the technology industry where people are often very passionate about it.

Make sure you have a portfolio of projects that you've worked on and link to it on your CV. You'll be working in a team in this role, so write about your experiences of working in a team, and what went well and why. Any examples of changes of requirements and planning/estimation of deliverables when working on projects will earn you extra points.

Interview Advice:

A lot of my application advice could also go here. Don't hold back! You'll be doing a few code tests as part of the interview process. But don't worry, there's lots of languages that you can use, even those that you won't be using in your job (and you won't lose any points for choosing a different language). Stay calm and make sure you understand exactly what the challenges require you to do. Be prepared to talk about those experiences of working in a team.

Application Advice:

Fidessa runs on graduates, so usually you want a 2:1 in a technical field. Some roles aren't necessarily asking for someone technical straight off the bat, though, so as long as you can show you're well organised and have good attention to detail, they may give you a chance.

Interview Advice:

There are technical tests, depending on role, that may be anything from coding questions to logical reasoning tests. Do some research on the financial industry before applying, it will stand you in good stead if you can show you have some enthusiasm. Have examples of innovation and creativity at the ready.

Application Advice:

Approach tasks and questions with a can-do attitude.

Interview Advice:

I was asked to complete an online coding test before I progressed to the interview stage. The interview stage consisted of two more coding tests and a face to face interview. For a developing role Fidessa is more interested in your logic and coding skills than your knowledge of financial markets; you are trained up on the latter when you start work.

Application Advice:

I applied through a graduate recruitment company, only my CV was required. Primary focus of that was on my Computer Science degree at University - highlighting the skills I learnt there and how they would be applicable to my career such as organisation and technical ability.

Interview Advice:

Two-stage process: first a programming exercise at home that asks you to write code to fulfill the needs of a particular scenario paying close attention to ensuring that all cases are considered correctly and that code complexity is appropriate - not writing an O(n^2) algorithm if it can be done in O(n) for example.
If successful you then take a slightly longer but in the same style programming exercise at their offices followed by a face-to-face interview if you achieve the required pass mark.
The interview is relaxed yet formal and most of my interview was focused upon my final year project at University describing how it worked, what research I had to do, how I overcame difficulties etc. I brought printed screenshots of my program and of the work behind it which helped immensely.

Application Advice:

As long as you have a decent degree or experience in IT/programming, it is fairly possible to get to the Competency Test stage. If you practice these, it is fairly easy to get into an interview. Interviews are the hard part.

Interview Advice:

Be confident in your problem solving abilities. It is more about the questions you ask to find the answer rather than knowing the answer. The company will train you on all the more technical skills to give you the situational information you need, so what they are looking for is the ability to analyse information, ask the right questions to get more information and how you get to your conclusions. They prefer a quality candidate who is able to learn rather than what they know.

Words are all well and good, but a portfolio of your own work speaks volumes and is your best weapon to convince an employer of your dedication and the quality of your work. Create a public GitHub or other repository and draw attention to it on your CV and public job search websites.

Interview Advice:

There are no cheat codes for interviews, it's just a matter of knowing *how* to talk about your experiences and achievements. Software development jobs usually involve working in a team, so make sure you can talk about those times when you worked in a team and why you were a valuable member of it, but also how the team dealt with disputes or changes in requirements.

They are genuinely are looking for a well rounded person with range of interests. Show a creative side, an ability to think independently and come up with new ideas, a passion / excitement for tackling challenges with technology.

Interview Advice:

The interviews are very well thought and the interviewers are nice and smiley. They are well enough structured that if you are right for the job you will get an opportunity to show it.
Make it clear that you want to be at Fidessa for many years and that you are confident they will be good for your development and career. Do this by researching and talking about Fidessa, their training programs, their HR policies, their high ratings on sites like this -JobCrowd.
The interviews are long and thorough so make sure you can explain your past and planned future in great detail. Its ok to have made mistakes in the past as long as you can explain what you learnt etc.
There will be a lot of situational questions where you will be expected to give examples of when you have dealt with specific types of problems in your past.
There will be a written test, just do your best, even if you can't do any of it you can still get the job as long as you respond correctly when the answers are explained to you.

You will need some programming experience, but it needn't be extensive if you can demonstrate an aptitude for problem solving and desire to learn.

Interview Advice:

The interview involves some programming tasks that can be accomplished with fairly basic knowledge. The skill lies in understanding the problem and framing it in a way that can be addressed with a short piece of simple, efficient code. There will be a chance to discuss your solutions afterwards so you can show how you could have improved on your code. If successful at this stage, some fairly standard competency based questions follow.

Application Advice:

It is such a great place to work - I would certainly encourage any graduate to apply. You will need to have strong technical skills, plus a friendly 'people-focused/ collaborative' personality. Fidessa love collaboration.

Interview Advice:

I was asked about the company. They obviously like it if you have done your research. I would also suggest going a step further than just the usual, technical research and investigate the company values - mention how these align with your own values (only if they do, of course!) Fidessa aren't looking for buzzwords and jargon, they tend to hire very down-to-earth people.

Fidessa like people who are highly collaborative/ team players, so it's good to mention that and provide evidence in interviews. If you're looking for more of a competitive environment, where you can stand out from the crowd, then Fidessa may not be for you!

Interview Advice:

The interviewers are really down to earth, so don't be worried. There were no stupid questions (what biscuit/ animal would you be etc.) They just want to know a) what you know about the company (so do your research) and b) what examples you have/ evidence you have of your technical ability (uni experience etc.)

Interview Advice:

Be prepare to face some quite hard interviews. You will need to show your programming skill, but also analytical and problem solving skills. For the programming part, the best advice is to practice with short (in time) exercises. As regards the problem solving skills, there is not much one can do to prepare himself, just use your brain and don't be afraid of speaking your mind.

It is just another company. Money comes before people and the leaders aren't taught how to lead, but micromanage. Seems to be the cause of many problems in many companies. Causes juniors to leave early and not develop to their full potential which could have seen them stay at the company. No real sense of vision or cause, just seems to be to automate trading. Nothing that seems to have a chance of changing the course of an industry. Decisions made by senior staff clearly prove they are driven by a single purpose: to make more profits. Probably because those making the decisions get more money for making profits. Those at the bottom get trod on and leave. Very predictable and boring.
