Application Advice:

Make sure you use examples that clearly demonstrate you are aligned with GT's values. These can be from uni, school or just everyday life!

Interview Advice:

Be relevant, use the CLEARR values religiously, research about the firm and our upcoming goals, research about the culture here. Have some commercial awareness but don't worry about having to know everything that is going on in the news! For example - if you are applying for an audit role - you should be aware that GT no longer pitch for FTSE 350 audits etc.

Application Advice:

Try to be yourself as much as possible. During the interview process they will look for like minded people who share the values of the company. Therefore look at the company values and identify what you have done that really demonstrates that you have these, and truthfully acknowledge that if you don't share these views another company may be mutually better suited.

Interview Advice:

One of the most difficult tasks is the group exercise, not because of the content, but due to working well with the other candidates. Going into such a group task you should already know that you need to work collaboratively, but you need to do this in a way that showcases your abilities without overpowering the other candidates. The applicants that don't get past this stage are the ones that overshadow the others and do not consider and allow the others to speak.

To be prepared to work hard, as the main focus in my opinion is to make sure you get the study and work balance right, especially throughout the first few years. To make sure one knows what an Auditor does because if it's not interesting for you, then you shouldn't apply solely because it's a good opportunity.

Interview Advice:

Grant Thornton is very open in the mindset when it comes to employing people. They do not look for an accountancy background or for you to know what an auditor does inside out. However you need to show your interest in this sector, how your work character fits with the values of Grant Thornton and how your personal character and values are suitable for becoming a professional with GT.

Even though you are applying for a public sector role, make sure you research companies (i.e. company doing well/badly) as we look for broad sector understanding. Also look into the qualification you will be studying, public sector trainees study the Cipfa/ICAS qualification which is new and pretty innovative. Grant Thornton looks at the person as a whole rather than just at grades so try to put across the kind of person you are, your interests etc.

The application is very similar to those of other accountancy firms however I found the HR staff incredibly friendly and they made me feel at ease during both the phone interview and the assessment centre so what I would say is to make the most of those two steps, in particular as interviewers definitely give you a chance to just be yourself.

Interview Advice:

Just be yourself because GT want to check whether you'll fit in with the culture so there's no point in pretending that you're someone you're not.

If you have not already done the online aptitude tests, make sure you have practiced before the real thing. There are many practice aptitude tests on the internet that you can do - many free of charge. With regard to the interview and assessment centre - it is best just to be yourself, remember they are assessing you as to how you will fit into the team and enthusiasm at Grant Thornton goes a long way!

Interview Advice:

Do your research. Find out as much as you can about finance and business in general - both commercial and Public Sector. Think about which industries are doing well at the moment and which are not, and why. What role can/does Grant Thornton pay in this and what separates Grant Thornton from other firms.

Application Advice:

Be truthful in your application and also research the role you are applying for in great detail. Furthermore it helps to state why you have applied for the office you have chosen (e.g. what connections you have to the city and why you think you want to be part of it). Also make sure to elaborate on the roles you took on at school/university/previous jobs which show that you can both be a leader when expected and also be able to work as part of a team when needed. Grant Thornton are looking for people who are willing to learn on the job and contribute to their economy so make sure to get this across.

Interview Advice:

Be clear and direct with the interviewers. Make sure you are calm and collected, as being nervous often comes across as being cold. Furthermore, in the group exercises make sure to maintain a balance between being forthcoming and involved and also letting the others get their point of view across. Elaborate during the competency interview about your skills without worrying about boasting as the interviewers want to hear why you believe yourself to be good for the role.

Application Advice:

Try and get some work experience, even if it is just a week here and there our different accountancy, banking or industry firms so that the application can show situations that you have been involved with, and this will greatly help when answering competency based questions. It is good to have a range of different scenarios, from academic examples to work life experiences. This will then give you more to talk about in your application, either why you want to work for Grant Thornton, or why accountancy, rather than just giving a generic answer.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself! Especially when it come to the assessment day, the assessors can tell who is coming across genuinely. Grant Thornton really buys into the person, and therefore doesn't require the most academic, most skilful graduates, but people who they feel are well rounded and have potential to succeed. In audit, tax and advisory, you deal directly with clients. So communication and social skills are a key factor, and can sometimes get you further than just having great academic history.

As far as audit/accountancy firms go, Grant Thornton undoubtedly provide much more support for workload (i.e. they don't shove too much on you too fast) which is reflected in their lower trainee attrition rate. Make sure you research the ACA qualification so that you are aware of the exam requirements. Also be aware that from starting in the audit department there are loads of different departments that you can transfer to once you have qualified and audit is a great place to start to learn a lot about company finances.

Interview Advice:

There are a lot of competency based questions so have a think about all the different activities that you have done which you could use an examples for teamwork, perseverance, good communication etc. Also do some research on the firm by looking at news articles and the Grant Thornton website. It is a really exciting time for the firm at the moment so it would be good if you could talk about it. Also there is a website called Spilling the beans where trainees blog about their experiences and provide tips on applications.

Make sure you have clear in your mind your reasons for why you want to work in tax. Throw in any experiences at university, school or employment that you think help you demonstrate the core "competencies" (every company or firm has them).

Interview Advice:

Make sure you're completely comfortable with what you put down in the application form. I think I made a table of competencies and put in experiences etc. that I hadn't already mentioned in my application form so that if necessary I had more than just my application form to talk about.

Another thing: don't speak out of turn (you might be really excited/nervous at the interview, but tone it down) because it's really rude and puts interviewers on edge, so I hear.

You can't rely on your academics alone anymore. Everyone applying will have a 2:1 from a good university. You need to be more, don't be afraid to talk about yourself outside of academia.

Interview Advice:

Keep calm. No one expects you to be an expert on accounting. You need to show an interest, and an ability to logically process information. If you're given a case study, draw reasonable conclusions from the data, that is what they want, not someone blabbering about how being a geography student means they didn't know what to do with the information, it will be generic.
