at Grant Thornton UK LLP

Employer: Grant Thornton UK LLP

Who we are

Grant Thornton is one of the world’s leading organisations providing business and financial advice to clients that demand world leading solutions. We have a focus on audit, tax and advisory, with offices in over 100 countries. But we're much more than just accountants – and so are the people that work for us. We’re a complex, ambitious organisation, helping over 40,000 clients in the UK alone to improve their financial performance and manage risk through our specialised business advisory services.

Our graduates need to be able to provide the kinds of insight that adds real value to dynamic organisations, such as our clients. This takes reason, instinct and the confidence to challenge assumptions right from day one. Our graduates, who join us in over 20 of our 27 offices nationally, enjoy tough challenges, seek out opportunities and are ready to kick start a career as a trusted adviser right at the heart of business.

As a Grant Thornton trainee you’ll have the opportunity to join one of five business areas: audit, tax, actuarial, technology risk services and restructuring. You'll also have the opportunity for internal secondment to develop your skills across our business areas.

What you'll be doing

Our trainees tell us that there's never a dull day when working in audit. The variety and challenge is what keeps it exciting and being part of something that's fundamentally right at the heart of business gets them out of bed each morning. As a trainee, you 'll be working with and advising dynamic organisations of all different sizes and from a wide range of sectors, delivering effective and innovative solutions to help unlock their potential for growth. You'll be central to their growth journey; as a trusted adviser you'll be helping them achieve their ambitions and taking them from where they are to where they want to be. Alongside this, you will be studying for your professional qualification.

Public sector audit:

Grant Thornton has become the number one supplier of public sector audit services to local governments and the NHS, something we're really proud of. The work we do here impacts absolutely everyone across the whole of the UK.

The public sector audit team focuses on the public bodies, government departments and national services that are constantly in the news, as they reorganise their financial operations according to the changing government legislation. The scope for making a difference is huge and the business advisers who work within this area talk about the sense of value they bring on a daily basis. You 'll spend most of your time onsite with clients, such as local government and NHS bodies, helping them to continue delivering services in the most cost-effective way.

Our clients look to us not only to save money, but also to ensure they are operating within the law. Working in the tax team, it's about interpreting complex legislation and delivering solutions in a way that the client understands. Tax is a cost to their business and we, at Grant Thornton, are here to operate efficiently, to manage that.

We hire trainees into several different areas of tax: Corporate Tax, Tax Investigations, Entrepreneurial & Private Client Services, VAT, Financial Services, Financial Planning, Employer Solutions, Property and Transfer Pricing.

As a trusted business adviser in the actuarial team, you'll need to be a confident communicator, as you advise your clients of the best way to mitigate risk, and promote growth within their organisation. You'll work closely with your clients on project-related services, guiding them through planning, budget management, and risk resolution.

No two assignments are the same, and one day you could be helping a pensions company understand its future liabilities, and the next, advising an insurance company on how much capital it requires. You'll constantly be challenged as you explore different businesses to identify and analyse areas vulnerable to risk. Here more than anywhere you'll need to balance a thorough technical understanding with a passion for business and the wider market which helps unlock potential for growth for the dynamic organisations we work with.

Technology risk services:

Technology risk services deals directly with all risks involved with using business technology. Here, you'll be able to balance your interest in consulting with your love of technology. It's one of the most exciting teams, giving you exposure to up-to-date technologies used by dynamic organisations across the UK and further afield.

As part of the technology risk services team, you will be working with private and public sector clients, and you'll need to have the ability to think strategically and see the big picture as well as focus on the technical elements and drill down to the relevant detail for the client you're working on. You will deliver solutions that will enable clients to strengthen internal controls, implement sound organisational strategies, increase technological capabilities and improve their operational efficiency. You'll need to balance a passion for business with a passion for technology to help our clients unlock their potential for growth.

Working within the restructuring  team requires a certain level of tenacity, approachability and professionalism, as you'll be investigating the affairs of businesses in financial trouble. You'll need to be sensitive, but also challenge your clients on critical matters that could further affect the health of the company. We supply a wide range of services to underperforming business and their stakeholders. We focus on identifying and resolving issues affecting profitability, protecting enterprise value and, where necessary, recovering value for stakeholders.

Our assignments vary from financially robust companies seeking to acquire underperforming competitors, to distressed businesses requiring an urgent solution. We have 54 partners and directors, and over 600 people operating from 18 locations, making us one of the largest dedicated teams in the UK.
