Application Advice:

Look beyond merely your financial experience and academics, these are undoubtedly important aspects of a CV but if it's all you mention then it becomes a generic, boring CV very quickly.

Interview Advice:

Be well prepared on the technical aspects of the role - you are expected to have a basic grounding in areas of finance and banking, not an advanced knowledge, but a basic grounding. However also be prepared to talk about other aspects of your life besides your ambition to work in finance, otherwise it is tricky to build up a rapport with your interviewers.

Make sure you research the company and our values and employee characteristics prior to applying - bear these in mind both at application stage when answering questions and also during interview and assessment centre stage!
Ensure your answers to the application questions are based on current developments in the financial sector as well as your own ideas.
Also do ensure your cover letter and CV are proofread by multiple people and contain all experience that would make you an outstanding graduate!

Interview Advice:

For competency-based questions ensure you use relevant experiences from a multitude of backgrounds -personal life, university, school etc.
Our interviews stress the importance of company values so do make sure you research those and include them in your answers too!

Understand the destination roles of the different schemes e.g. Commerical banking scheme should lead to being a relationship manager- you should want to be an RM.

As obvious as it sounds, really ask yourself whether you want to work in banking- there are several good points and several bad points- so you must sit down with a variety of bankers and really understand what you would be doing. Once you are on a scheme- you are committed to it as exiting it could be looked at unfavourably by other employers and would have meant you have wasted all that time applying.

Understand the recruitment process thoroughly.

Application Advice:

These days, it's imperative that you have an excellent CV that shows a variety of business/commercially related experience as well as any other extra-curricular activities to demonstrate that you are a well-rounded individual. By ensuring that you have a clear and concise CV that is tailored to the role that you are applying for, you are far more likely to capture the attention of the recruiters. When undertaking online tests, the key is preparation and practice. Do not expect to be able to pass them with flying colours on a first attempt as they are probably a little different to anything you have done previously.

Interview Advice:

Once you are at interview stage, whilst your previous experience and CV carrys weight in as much as the examples you will use to support your statements, in all honesty more consideration is given to you as a person, how you conduct yourself and how you express your ideas. Very often I meet candidates at assessment centres who are more qualified, more varied and genuinely more impressive than I am on paper, but actually they have very poor inter-personal skills and do not exude the confidence, professionalism and clarity that would be required in a front office role. Remember to be polite, courteous and inquisitive with anyone that you meet on the assessment day as you never know who will be feeding back information on you to the relevant people.

Application Advice:

Apply as early as possible as places will be filled as soon as enough people get through to the Assessment Centres. Therefore if you leave to later then it may well be too late. Additionally, make sure you do your research when doing the initial application - there is nothing worse than seeing an application that has clearly been copy and pasted from an application to another bank. In light of this, make sure your application is styled towards the role and bank rather than full of generic terms that could apply to any bank - you need to differentiate yourself.

Interview Advice:

Keep calm and keep it simple - adding detail/ complexity where possible - otherwise you will trip yourself up. Make sure you keep abreast of what is going on in the market - do not try and simply cram the night before as that will most likely become evident in any interview if the interviewer decides to press you. It always good to know facts like where different markets are i.e. where the FTSE 100 is, as well as the company's share price etc. As ever research is critical - you really do need to make sure you do your prep. However that doesn't mean you have to know everything - you just have to show interest and some market knowledge.

There is a small number of fairly generic open questions, so I would recommend making answers as personalised and specific as possible to highlight the unique points about your application.

Rather, I would recommend preparing to talk about the HSBC brand and values, as well as recent industry headlines and trends. Make sure you research the company values of: Open, Connected and Dependable. Understand what they mean for you as a person and how they fit on a larger scale within HSBC. Make sure that these values are reflective of you as a person as these will be the key areas that HSBC will address during the telephone values-led interview and during the assessment centre interview itself.

At the assessment centre be courteous and friendly to other potential applicants. In one sense they are your competitors, but on the other, there will be more than one place up for grabs. Being friendly, helpful and respectful to the other applicants during the group exercises will put you in good stead with the Assessors.

Interview Advice:

Make sure you can relate the three values to your own experiences in life as they will ask you questions like "Tell me about a time you helped someone with a problem". These questions spread over several of the values, so make sure you have a few in-depth examples up your sleeve.

Be interested in what the interviewer is asking you and don’t be afraid to ask some questions back regarding clarification or anything relating to the job that you would like a little more detail about (particularly do this at the assessment centre interview as this will done by an HSBC employee unlike the telephone interview which is conducted by a third party).

Application Advice:

Part of the application process involves completing online psychometric tests. I cannot emphasise the importance of practicing these enough. Although these are not too hard, if you try to wing it without practice you will probably fail.

Interview Advice:

I know it sounds clichéd, but be yourself. HSBC employ individuals for their personality and competencies rather than their knowledge. You can be taught how to do a job, but you cannot be taught to be a decent person, and that’s the most important thing. Banking is a people business

Application Advice:

Be yourself - whilst it sounds corny, the recruitment process at HSBC is not designed to find the best 'bankers' with sound technical and industry knowledge. Instead, HSBC look to employ the right kind of person to join the Bank in line with its core values of being Open, Dependable and Connected; this values can only be displayed if you act openly and honestly throughout the application process.
Understand the schemes - each of the graduate programmes offered by HSBC is different, and whilst they may overlap with other schemes, their overall purpose is different in terms of the skills and development they inculcate in trainees. Make sure you fully understand which scheme is right for you.
Ask yourself what you want - HSBC will not pay you the highest salary on the market. If money is your driver, you are better off applying elsewhere. But it will provide you with unparalleled opportunities, if you are willing to make the most of them.

Interview Advice:

It would not be fair to provide full answers to the assessment centre questions. However, it is important to keep in mind, technical knowledge is not the focus of the interview - it is about understanding the values that you as an individual hold, and the ways in which you work as an individual and with others.

Application Advice:

Take time to research the company. Focus on the companies that you want to work for. Although people may say it's a numbers game, employers can really tell when a candidate is motivated to their company and their role, as opposed to someone who applies for every job in the market.

Interview Advice:

Just be yourself. If the company and the role fits, than its the right job for you. If its not than you will just be unhappy in your role.

Application Advice:

HSBC receives many applications for each offer made. It is therefore important to spend an appropriate amount of time on the initial application and ensure that it is tailored to the specific role you are applying for.

Interview Advice:

HSBC does not have a set concept of exactly what a candidate should be like. Each graduate has their own strengths, personalities and aspirations. It is therefore important during the interview and assessment centre to simply be yourself.

The interview and assessment centre does not focus on technical questions. Instead, there are various interviews, role plays and group exercises to assess various elements of how you are likely to perform if you were offered a place on the scheme. It is always hard to do, but the most important thing of all is to stay as calm as possible.
