We’re legal experts with a difference.

We’re more than just a law firm – we’re a group of like-minded, friendly people working together to help individuals and businesses navigate life’s ups and downs.

As well as offering a full-range of legal services to individuals and businesses, we also support people with their financial planning, wealth, and asset management. We work with our clients, and take the time to understand what matters most to them. We call it ‘expert hand, human touch’.

We focus on what really matters, our clients, colleagues and communities.

Early Careers Opportunities

We offer training contracts and apprenticeships across 11 of our UK offices.

Training Contracts are for two years and consist of 4 x 6 month seats in different departments covering our personal legal services or business legal services.  Please see our online brochure for further details regarding which departments are available in our different locations.  We offer a formal Legal Work Placement over the summer for those students who are 2nd year law or 3rd year non-law.  We increasingly look to make offers to this group of candidates therefore for a chance to show your skills and work with our solicitors we encourage students to apply for our placement.

Our apprenticeships are varied and can cover paralegal, business admin, finance and other apprenticeship schemes.  Roles are advertised on our website so please click on the Careers section for more information.

Whatever role you are in you will be supported from day one with training and guidance from your supervisor and the team around you.  We value you for who you are and what you bring to Irwin Mitchell.

What are the best and worst things about your job?

I love my job. My colleagues are amazing - supportive, patient (I am only a few months into my training contract), understanding, friendly, interested in me as a person and not just an employee.

Work/life balance is very important to IM. I very rarely work excessively long hours & have been able to maintain a good home life alongside my work. I do not feel forced to work long hours and am encouraged to maintain my work/life balance by my supervisor and wider team.

Benefits- IM has a great benefits package & rewards package.

Opportunity for progression - IM have excellent reward schemes to notice the hard work their employees put in. Opportunities for promotions and career progression are vast if you work hard.

Stability - as above, if you work hard then IM offers great career stability.

What are the best and worst things about your job?

For me, the best thing about my job is seeing a case come together following all of the work you have done. As a paralegal apprentice I only support other fee earners doing work for them if and when they need me to so I never usually see a case from start to end like the case handlers do. However I do get involved on some cases regularly and although I wasn't necessarily working here when they were started, seeing them settle after so much hard work is very rewarding; especially as the cases we deal with are very high value and can go on for years.

Application Advice:

focus carefully on the components of the questions. IM operates a blind application process so your grades and university are not relevant. How well you answer all elements of the competency questions is what will get you to the interview stage. Use recent examples if possible. If a question asks 'tell me about a time when' and 'what your role was within...' then both are equally important elements of the answer.

Interview Advice:

Relax. Prepare by reading the twitter feed/linkedIn feed of the firm. Use Legal 500 to understand what work is actually done in the office you are applying to and can speak knowledgeably about it.
At the interview itself the questions the interviewer will be asking is whether they would like to work with this person and whether they would put them in front of a client. Therefore, relax, smile, be polite to everyone and don't be afraid to laugh. Calm, relaxed authority - expert hand - human touch!

Get involved in plenty of extra-curricular activities and talk about them. Irwin Mitchell want to see well-rounded people and academics are not important at the application stage. If you aren't successful the first time, listen to the feedback and apply again. Tenacity is one of Irwin Mitchell's core values.

Interview Advice:

Be confident, smile, be your best self. The interviewers aren't trying to trick you, and if they challenge you on an answer you have given, engage with them and defend your position appropriately. Show how you can interact confidently & respectfully with people - you will need this skill for clients too so best to show it off now. You will work as part of a team at IM, show you are a team player and can communicate effectively & build relationships.

Application Advice:

Look carefully at the core values of the firm and make sure that you demonstrate as best you can why you would be a good fit.

I considered the values and then set about gaining experience and undertaking roles at university to demonstrate in my application that I was already carrying out the firm's core values. For example I joined the charities committee at university and I joined one of the Irwin Mitchell Schemes to get involved.

The firm is interested in you as a person, so be sure to show your personality and you hobbies and interests. Sports and hobbies can be a great way to demonstrate key qualities that make a desirable candidate.

Interview Advice:

During the interview, my best advice would be to be yourself. I attended many interviews during my second year of university. I prepared much in the same way, for each firm, researching the firm and being as well read as possible. It was not until my interview at Irwin Mitchell that I understood that it really is about finding the firm that is the right fit for you.

Do not be afraid to show your personality. The focus is more on recruiting people who will be part of the team and work within the ethos of the firm, rather than the grades achieved in exams.

The questions I was asked were largely competency based. Be prepared with examples where you have shown good customer care or dealt with an issue etc.

Interview Advice:

The application process may involve an online interview before a physical interview. Candidates should remember to dress the part and practice in front of a camera first.

Physical interviews are usually conducted with two members of staff interviewing in pairs. Partners take an active role in the recruitment process so it is important to be prepared to demonstrate enthusiasm, commercial awareness and professionalism when addressing partners in an interview room.

Thoroughly research the firm and prepare competency questions to enable you to discuss a variety of different examples, rather than focusing on a singular example.

Think about key questions: why IM? why law? why commercial/personal law? what motivates you? what others would say about you? a time you worked in a team? a time when things didn't go to plan? your strengths and weaknesses?

Interview Advice:

Interview questions were a mix between getting to know you as a candidate (what drives you, likes, dislikes, etc.) and skills/competency based questions. For the former, be yourself. The interviewers don't want to trip you up (it's in nobody's interest for them to do this) so don't try to be someone you are not. For the latter, it is useful to have stock examples of your hobbies, work experiences, charity involvement, other that display how you have achieved and displayed these skills.

Application Advice:

Be yourself. Be passionate about the brand and do your research on the firm, culture and values. Only apply if you really want to work here and know the reasons for wanting to work here. Be friendly, polite and courteous to everyone you meet when you visit the office, including security, reception and HR.

Interview Advice:

Be friendly and be yourself - you are more likely to fit in and enjoy yourself in the long run if you are honest! Prepare in advance - consider new developments in the law and research areas that this firm is interested in e.g. if applying to PLS, look at fixed costs, DOLS, etc. If BLS, look at Brexit. I was asked lots of questions about team work because this office is a team environment. Think of examples of where you have worked well in a team and consider in advance what strengths you can bring.

Take the time to research the firm inside out before you apply. There are a lot of things about IM that are very different to traditional law firms, and if you are not aware of this, it is likely to show.

Interview Advice:

Be friendly, enthusiastic and try to relax. Being confident that you have researched everything about the firm beforehand is likely to help with this. Application Advice:

Research the company thoroughly, look into its values, its working environment, the type of work it carries out and the client it carries it out for. Then think about the type of firm you wish to work for and see if the two marry up. A training contract application is not just about a firm choosing its trainees, but also a future trainee selecting the right firm. In order to make the most of the training contract, you want both.

Interview Advice:

Prepare thoroughly, be able to answer competency questions and research the firm well. Know your application and CV inside out but most importantly try to relax once you are in the interview. There will have been over a thousand applicants, and only a small percentage are interviewed, so to get to this stage, you are the type of candidate the firm is looking for.

The best thing to do is to try and gain as much work experience as possible. Irwin Mitchell offers short placement schemes which are a great way to experience the company and see whether it is somewhere you would like to work. The firm recruits a lot of its trainees through these schemes.

Interview Advice:

The key thing is to really know why you want to work here. Don't just say the ordinary 'I want to work for a good firm', try to pinpoint exactly what makes IM different and why that would suit you and what you have to offer the firm. I looked a lot at the future of the legal industry to demonstrate my wider knowledge of the sector. Try and research the values of the firm and include these in your application/interview beside skills/activities you have done which reflect each value. Try not to be too contrived when doing this though!

Paralegals take precedent over NQ roles which is not great for new trainees coming in to the company as the NQ positions have almost been pre-decided

Irwin Mitchell actively promotes a healthy work/life balance amongst its employees, and the majority of 'line managers' genuinely care about their colleagues learning and progressing.

Worst:

The management often seem aloof and disconnected. The pay is also £1000s behind competitors doing the same or similar work. It is disingenuous for the firm to claim that the salary is reasonable if you compare IM to larger firms where people are working hours, as many 'medium' sized firms offer a similar work/life balance yet do not pay so poorly.

Its reputation is fantastic. It is also a very progressive firm in terms of future planning; it is unique in that it has both business and personal practices, allowing for a law firm which can provide a huge range of services. The firm also engages in social responsibility a lot and encourages all its staff to be involved in things such as sponsored cycles, bake sales and even sky-diving!

Worst:

It is competitive to get a job at the firm. However, this is reflective of what a great place it is to work. As with any firm, the work can be demanding but in general work/life balance is maintained.
