Understand the culture of the company as much as the track record. Be aware of any upcoming changes in structure. Try to identify key points that may not necessarily be available on the company website.

Interview Advice:

Be prepared and do your research. Ensure you can confidently explain why you want to work for the company but also why you may fit in at the company.

Similar application process to most other firms.

Interview and assessment centre were much more relaxed than with other firms. JLL are interested in your personality - not your ability to recite pre-prepared answers.

Application Advice:

Make sure that you do research into what the different departments are and think about what area you may like to work in. This looks good at interview stage and will make you stand out from other applicants.
It is also important to get as much work experience as possible.

Interview Advice:

Make sure you are familiar with the most recent market reports in preparation for the interview. It is also worth keeping up to date with the property press such as Property Week so you are familiar with the most current issues/topics being discussed.

Do be confident and slightly different. Diversity is a big thing here.

Application Advice:

Have a strong CV with a large amount of variety on it e.g. work experience, charity work, sporting achievements etc...

Interview Advice:

Stay relaxed as JLL don't try and catch candidates out in the interview, they are just trying to find out what level you are at and whether you will fit into the company.

Application Advice:

Be yourself, don't necessarily write generic things that every candidate will say they have. Focus on what separates you from the crowd.

Interview Advice:

Practice competency based questions. For example, "Can you talk about a situation where you have had to lead a team and what you did to get the best out of everyone?"

Also know the basics, company background is essential and make sure when you get asked why you want to work for the company you have an answer ready. Every company wants an employee that has a strong interest in what they do.

Application Advice:

Research aspects of company values and try to link these with real life scenarios you have experienced.

Ensure your application isn't focused around one specific skill or interest (e.g sport, music etc.) when providing examples.

Interview Advice:

You are not expected to know the market inside out, however it is very important to have a good awareness of global affairs and what impact this may have on the property industry. Having a good background knowledge on your local market will certainly benefit you when it comes to interview stage, which would be supplemented well with a couple of weeks work experience.

Application Advice:

Be honest, be human - don't over exaggerate or be over eager. We need to imagine working with you on a daily basis so being too intense in your application/interview could be disadvantageous.
Show a genuine passion for the property industry and demonstrate experience you have had that could be relevant.
Be confident and professional - we need to imagine you speaking to clients.
Stay calm and composed.

Interview Advice:

Dress professionally but be comfortable. Being relaxed makes all the difference.

Always make eye contact and imagine you are in a client meeting.

The interviewers aren't there to catch you out. If they ask tough or unusual questions, this is to see how you react - so don't get flustered. We don't expect you to know everything. We just want to see that you can remain calm and professional.

Application Advice:

Show you have knowledge of the sector but also the company. Highlight what you are interested in but do make them aware that you understand all aspects of the business and how you would contribute. Be ready to take on different roles and do not be afraid of learning new things and dealing with things which you are not familiar with. Investigate what the team you are aiming for would need and show them how you can contribute in that area, either by demonstrating the knowledge you already have or expressing how you would learn this particular skill.

Interview Advice:

They tend to ask if you possess good analytic skills, so do take the time to get familiar with excel, and other programs which are necessary for the role you are applying for. You do not need to be the best at it, but you do have to be aware, and learn (what you can on your own) and be willing to work through it. Don’t focus on just one thing, but don’t be indifferent either. If they ask which area you are interested in the most, do let them know, but also add how you would like to explore other areas of expertise which link to it, and enjoy working in a team towards the same goal.

Graduate Surveyor – Valuation Advisory, Retail Valuation Advisory at JLL

Application Advice:

Make it interesting. They get thousands of applications so try and stand out - think about how most people would answer a question and try and put a different spin on it - you'll stick in the assessor's mind which is half the battle.

Things like spelling and punctuation are also incredibly important. When you have that volume of applications a tiny mistake can be the reason you don't make the first cut.

Last thing, if you want to work in London put it as your first choice. If you want a region, put that. Don't try and play a tactical game. If an assessor from the regions thinks you actually want London that may well stand against you as they won't want to choose someone who they think will leave as soon as they qualify.

Interview Advice:

Show them you are someone they would want to work with, not only because you can do the job, but also because of who you are as a person. Experience and 'the right degree' will only get you so far. You want them to finish your interview and think 'I really want that person on my team'. So relax and make sure you have some questions for them.

Application Advice:

Ensure you include your own conscious and ethical values in your application, here at JLL we are very proud to be the most ethical property company.

Interview Advice:

It is important to know things like the share price of JLL, what affects lower oil prices have on the real estate industry for example. Have wider economic knowledge before embarking on an interview.

Application Advice:

It is important to research the company well to demonstrate the JLL values and how your experience is in line with these values. JLL look for candidates who can demonstrate good collaborative working and building relationships as this is a very sociable industry. They also look for resilience, so being able to demonstrate ability to problem-solve and overcome difficulties is important.

For a number of the graduate schemes you do not need to have a property background, so being able to show how you developed your interest in this industry is key.

Interview Advice:

The interview process has changed slightly since I applied but there are a number of competency based questions asked as well as interest in the business/property industry. It is important to be personable and engage with the activities during the day. Demonstrate good research of the company and recent industry news and present good examples of your experience and how this shows the competencies they are looking for.

Application Advice:

Present your wider curriculum involvement, showing a willingness to get involved in lots of things and commitment to them as wider contributions are valued in the workplace, for example organisation of office level events or voluntarily helping colleagues.

Interview Advice:

Be confident and be yourself. Try to get along with the people you meet at the interview, including other candidates and interviewers as the company are likely to be looking for those who integrate well and would be easy to work with on a day to day basis.

Application Advice:

Keep up to date with market knowledge - especially in the city you want to be based. An appreciation that it is a consultancy business at heart and knowing how to respond to client demands and meeting fee targets are key skills.

Interview Advice:

Interview questions are generally scenario based. For example, tell me a time you were working to a tight deadline - how did you overcome thi?. Tell me a time you worked alongside someone who you found particularly difficult - how did you overcome this?

Application Advice:

1. Applications take a long time to do, so start early.
2. Try to think of original examples and unusual things that you have done.
3. Brush up on your knowledge of the markets and basic terminology and concepts in real estate.

Interview Advice:

1. Be enthusiastic, both about JLL and working in property. There is a lot to be enthusiastic about and if you can't get excited about it, this might not be the job for you.
2. Prepare thoroughly for the basic questions, such as "why should we hire you?", "why do you particularly want to work at JLL and not another firm?", "why do you want to work in real estate and not some other sector?".
3. Don't over-prepare, to the extent that you lose all spontaneity and ability to be interesting or unusual.

Application Advice:

Interview Advice:

JLL's interview process is more about finding out whether you fit the role and what sort of person you are. Obviously, it is based around property but they aren't trying to catch you out.

Graduate Surveyor, Property Management at JLL

Application Advice:

Get as much work experience as possible! The more varied the better, as it will give you more to talk about if you get to the interview stage and it will help fill the application with a commentary that is actually relevant to the property industry. Do not make it something that could be sent off to any big corporate.

If you do not have any relevant experience, do not let it put you off applying, JLL are always looking to take on non-cognate students with backgrounds beyond real estate. Just be sure to clearly identify your transferable skills and clarify what you think makes them relevant to various business-lines within the company.

Interview Advice:

As per the above, if you have relevant work experience, talk about it whenever the opportunity arises and be as technical as you can be. If you can readily utilise terminology that the interviewer uses on a daily basis with clients and colleagues, it shows that you are already on your way. Do not pretend to be the finished article; modesty often goes a long way.
