Try to explain your experience of industry as best you can. Detail projects you've worked on in university and explain how they are transferable to the role you are applying for.

My interview began with giving a short presentation to the two interviewers on 3 preset questions we were sent out weeks before.
They asked us to cover; what we thought the business could offer us, what we could offer to the business and why we wanted to work for the company.
They are relatively simple to present on with weeks to prepare for them.
The bulk of my interview was spent discussing what i had presented on along with questions covering my thoughts on working away from home, my dissertation and other questions relating university learning and team work to the work place. There were no technical question like other interviews I have been to and no written exam.

I believe the reason for this was because I had completed a summer internship the year before (with a different company) which really helps you stand out from the crowd.

Research the basic jobs a quantity surveyor must do on a construction project. Show enthusiasm for the role and the industry in general and convey your willingness to learn and develop as employers will never expect you to know everything before you even start. Furthermore prior to the interview research the company and current high profile and interesting jobs they are carrying out.
Interview Advice:
I was asked to explain various scenarios I have been in, whether it was personal of professional. I had to explain the problem that arose form this scenario and how I dealt with it and solved it by using specific techniques and skills. Always be prepared to ask them questions at the end of it as essentially it is your future and your potential long term career and company. Always prepare examples of weaknesses you have as well as strengths. Make sure the weaknesses can also be interpreted as strengths in certain aspects.

Keep your options open. Enjoy the Kier Inductions which are held in various locations. There are more benefits at Kier than most other companies from what I've heard from other graduates such as Kier's GDP is far better than most. Be honest in your interviews. Be honest in your CV, you will be questioned. Achieve the required grades needed. If you enjoy site work as well as office based work this is the place for you. Be cautious of the fact you might have to relocate from time to time depending on the location of the project ( if you're site based ). Don't be afraid to ask hard questions.

Obvious one, but make sure your CV is up to date. When doing your CV, try not to use a standard template for it. Make it personal to you. I have seen some CVs before that multiple people had used, so they all look the same. It doesn't help you stand out.
Try and get your application in as early as possible. My year (I think) they started assessment days in January, whereas in the next year they started in December.
Interview Advice:
By far the easiest process I have done for a company. All I had to do was a CV and an assessment center.
The assessment center is a day long and mine had about 60 people there. Throughout the day I had to do four tasks; team building exercise, individual interview (with one/two people), team discussion and another team activity. For the interview, you are required to make a presentation about 'Why you want to join Kier?' This should be about 10 minutes long, then it is followed by a standard interview. No hard questions during the interview. Mine was more of an informal chat.

Show any experience you've gained during placement and any other.
The positions in estimating/head office are less fun than being site based but offer a quicker development and career progression as you're involved at much higher level (e.g. regularly talking to Group Directors which is not possible if you're on site). It is always possible to go from bigger jobs to smaller but it is not as easy the other way round.
Avoid housing jobs as first job as the final salary ceiling is relatively low and it is very difficult to move to major projects as an experienced professional.

Try to get some work experience. If you can take a placement year, then that is ideal. For me, I did not have a first degree in a construction-related subject (it was in History), so I organised with a contractor to spend a week at a project. I took a week off work from my job at the time to gain an insight, offer something interesting to include in my application and confirm this was the career I wanted to pursue.
Also, make sure you read the job description and cover how you meet that criteria in the application. If in the past you have not done exactly what they are asking for, display times and experiences when you have gained and used skills that will enable you to carry out the required tasks once you are doing that job.

In contracting, I think being well rounded and a good communicator are more important than any academic prowess. Your degree is enough to demonstrate you have the intelligence, when attending assessment days. It is important to be the right type of person to work within a team in what can be a quite intense work environment. Any previous relevant experience will be beneficial as this will demonstrate that having experienced the industry, you are still interested. This suggests you are more likely to stick with the company rather than quit after a few months.

Similar to application advice, it is more important to be personable/friendly and communicate confidently. Ask plenty of questions as this will demonstrate enthusiasm as well as show you are comfortable speaking around new people. Be enthusiastic about the industry.

ALWAYS prepare! Read up about the company and have answers for common questions asked in interviews e.g. "why do you want to work for..." Always ask questions at the end - have some already prepared and written down. Always bring a notebook in with you to write notes - it shows you're serious and are interested plus it's always fine to bring your preparation notes in with you - it's not a test!

Show a keen interest in the built environment in general and have a focus on the design side as well as construction. Experience is always useful and having construction site knowledge definitely makes the role easier as does experience in management outside of construction. The role involves having broad construction knowledge and the ability to organise activities and the design team to create a building that satsfies the client's brief.
Interview Advice:
Always have a question or a few to mind to ask your interviewer, it shows interest in the company/role and that you have been thinking about the career options.
It is good to use your CV to give a flavour of yourself and not just your career to date as this is where alot of the interviewer's questions will come from.
If you have a particular interest be sure to bring it up as this can get the interviewer thinking about a gap in their current business you can fill (e.g. BIM)

Ask about contracts, idendifying trends in the industry can help you recognise a likely source of work for the next 5-10yrs (eg. power stations/ Rail in london)
If a contractor have steady contract wins in the power sector, this is likely to increase in the future.
