Application Advice:

Make sure you have tailored your application to why you want to come to Latham in particular, copying and pasting answers from other application forms doesn’t work. Knowledge of the firm’s culture and key practice areas is a must.

Interview Advice:

There are two interviews – a general interview all about yourself and a commercial awareness interview. In comparison to other firms the commercial awareness interview is focused more on your understanding of commercial issues as a whole rather than a particular issue that is topically in the papers.

Application Advice:

Target your application to the firm, and show how your qualities meet the qualities which Latham is looking for. Scouring the website is a good start.

Interview Advice:

Prepare thoroughly - do research on the firm and read the news. Also think about things you'd like to discuss. Be yourself.

Application Advice:

Be aware that the firm is corporate and finance based before applying - corporate and finance seats are compulsory and you only get one elective (which you may want to take abroad). Be aware of this if you are interested in a "niche" area such as intellectual property, employment, tax or IT/data protection as you will have to choose it as your elective and as the departments are small it is difficult to qualify into these areas.

Interview Advice:

I had a commercial awareness interview.

Application Advice:

Be clear on what you want and why - because it is important on an application form or in an interview that drive/motivation comes across.

Interview Advice:

The best preparation is doing lots of interviews, so I would look to ensure that any interview at Latham & Watkins is not your first ever interview.

Application Advice:

The online application form is fair and gives you an opportunity to outline why you want to train with Latham & Watkins and why you feel you would be a good fit with the firm. Be sure to do your background research – get to know the firm’s culture, history, main practice areas, major clients, strengths, office locations and recent deals and then tailor the application accordingly. Also, double check everything you write for spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Interview Advice:

The interview process is very straightforward and gives you a great opportunity to show why you would be right for the firm. So try to relax and be yourself in the interview. Also, once you have been asked a question, try to take a step back and think about the answers you wish to give before you start responding. If you have been asked to take a view on a topic (e.g. a recent news story or development in the commercial world) try to give both sides of the argument before summing up and giving your opinion on the topic.

Application Advice:

Make sure you spend a lot of time on your application, research the firm and make sure that Latham is the type of firm you want to go to.

Interview Advice:

There are two interviews, a general interview and a commercial awareness interview. Unlike other firms the commercial awareness interview is very general and the questions aren't based on what you read in the paper but your overall commercial awareness.

Application Advice:

- In-depth preparation is key - the firm specialises in certain areas of law and so, for example, this would not be the right place to train if you want exposure to niche areas of law (e.g. pensions).
- Be confident but not arrogant - important to be con

Interview Advice:

General interview questions based around competency and commercial awareness. My interviewers allowed me to dictate my interview. For example, if I raised a certain topic in the commercial press at the time, my interviewers would ask me spin off questions based around this topic. Have a broad overview of the commercial press and focus preparations on competency questions and passion for working at the firm.

Application Advice:

Be concise and avoid unnecessarily flowery language. By all means reference your achievements/Latham deals you have heard about/departments you are interested in but be prepared to talk about them at length in interview.

Apply for the vacation scheme.

Interview Advice:

The interview questions I encountered were not phrased so as to catch me out. The interviewers picked up on things I had put in my application form, but the questions were open-ended to give me a chance to take the answer any way I wanted to. The interview often progressed as more of a conversation.

Don't be misled - the questions are tough, particularly in the commercial interview. But they are nothing you should not expect if you keep on top of the FT/The Economist/legal news. My interview was a surreal mix of tough questions with a light-hearted atmosphere. But it put me at ease and I was much better able to express myself than had I been on edge.

The interview was an accurate depiction of life at Latham - hard work, but in a laid-back environment.

Application Advice:

Do not put anything into your application that you are not willing to talk about during an interview. Also, make sure you proofread the form before you submit it.
Be friendly, inevitably the interviewer will be thinking about whether you are someone with whom they want to work.

Interview Advice:

Why this firm? Why the city? Could you name a deal in the market that interests you?
