Application Advice:

Don't worry if you haven't done any work experience specifically in the construction industry as all work experience is relevant as the soft skills are just as important as the technical knowledge and understanding. Whilst it is good to have a strong academic performance, Mace recognise that extra-curricular activities like societies and sports are just as important

Interview Advice:

Be prepared to expand on your CV and talk about your experience and the skills that you have gained in the process. They also ask several competency based questions where you have to provide examples of when you demonstrated particular skills such as leadership or resolving conflict etc.

Application Advice:

I am not from a construction or civil engineering background, but this did not matter during the application process as much, as some of the following are almost more important in Project Management than having extensive technical knowledge:
-demonstrating my capacity to learn new concepts and adapt quickly
-evidence of problem-solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills as well as an innovative approach to difficult situations
-demonstrating that I can plan and organise, manage my own time and also understand the importance of sequencing tasks, programming, etc.
-showing that I am capable of working in a team/managing work and people
-showing that I have a professional and ethical approach to work
-confidence in written and verbal communication
-evidence that I have some level of commercial awareness

Interview Advice:

Make sure you know and understand the Mace values and keep them in mind when answering questions. Show your personality - be confident in your own ability and with your own answers and contributions, but if you are at an assessment centre, draw contributions out of others too.

Understand your passion and why you are interested in this role. Try to speak to people who have experience, try to tour around projects if possible, research charterships, gain a good understanding of different sectors to develop a preference.

Interview Advice:

Think what competencies you would need to be a good project manager and prepare examples as to how you can demonstrate these qualities. Don't worry about taking time to think; it is better to compose your answer rather than thinking you have to answer straight away and then stumble.
Be confident (even if you're not), shake hands, make eye contact - they're all small things but make the first impressions count.

Application Advice:

Understand the role, whether you are working in consultancy or construction areas. It is also important to understand the company and how the particular office operates. Most regional offices are consultancy based, whereas London has a much larger construction arm.

Interview Advice:

Show enthusiasm and an interest in the role. Consultancy PM is a very 'people' orientated role, working with different design teams and clients so it is important to show your personality and how you can adapt with different people. Most people can learn the role and techniques, but it is your own qualities that are important.

Then additional examples such as sales experience, using your initiative, and your strengths and weaknesses (weakness is a tough one, but look at what it is and how to are attempting to tackle it).

Look smart, smile, eye contact, be confident (even if you're not on the inside!). Most importantly, be yourself - show them who you are.

Carefully consider the role you are applying for, soundly understanding the difference between how a Contractor delivers a project and how a Consultant delivers a project, the two are very different, then consider how you and your skills are suited to a Consultancy role. As a Project or Construction Manager, if you prefer to be out on site on a daily basis, consider whether Consultancy is for you.

Interview Advice:

First round interviews were typical questions based upon my previous experience and University course and how each can be applied to my prospective job.

Second round interview was group based task scenarios with an individual element also. I would recommend to be prepared to work effectively within a group task. Do not try to dominate the task but listen to your peers, evaluate the options, offer your individual thoughts and ideas and ensure that you deliver and present your idea confidently.
