Interview Advice:

The first stage involved a case study and a few questions e.g. why consulting, why Mazars etc. It was very straight-forward and had a very relaxed atmosphere.

The assessment centre is more about seeing what you are like as a person e.g. easy to get along / work with, works well in a team. Don't get too bogged down on how well you do on tasks such as did you get the right answers etc. Try to relax and make friends with other candidates and the facilitators.

Think about what skills the job requires and create an example of where you have previously displayed that skill. Try and think of a variety of examples and avoid using the same example for different skills.

Interview Advice:

Really understand why you want to be in the accountancy/audit world. Have a strong understanding of the company and the role and don't approach the interview with a limited understanding of what the role entails.

Think carefully about questions you want to ask before the interview. Questions asked by many companies are normally standard questions so it's quite easy to think about these beforehand but avoid rehearsing your answers. Ultimately you should make every effort to make the interview into a conversation - it's a two way process (you need to gauge them as much as they need to gauge you).

Application Advice:

Make sure you have a brief understanding of what audit is and what the ACA qualification is. There is no need to have a detailed understanding, just a brief overview. Practise the online tests before you do them for real.

Interview Advice:

After the online application stage, if your application is successful you will be invited to an office for a face-to-face interview. There is a short analytical exercise at the beginning of the interview. This typically involves reading a news article and then discussing the key points of it, identifying the main stakeholders. The questions of the interview will probably be generic e.g. "Why audit?" "Why Mazars?", although there may be some competency-based questions such as "Tell me about a time where you have worked in a team".

If you are successful at the first interview, you will be invited to attend an assessment centre, where you will be joined by other candidates. You will have to give a 5 minute oral presentation and the topic for this is normally picked out at random on the day. This is followed by a group exercise and a time-pressured written exercise which requires you to read through several emails and letters. After lunch there is a final one-on-one interview with a senior member of staff. This revolves around competencies a lot more than the first interview, although there may still be questions about why you have chosen audit, the ACA or Mazars. Example questions include "tell me about a time you have acted as a role model for someone". "State three of the firms values and why they are important in this line of work". "Tell me about a time you have had to multi-task".

Application Advice:

I would advise any candidates applying for my role to research the company thoroughly and show this in their application. This will help you decide that company is right for you, which is just as important as whether you are right for the company.

Interview Advice:

I would advise potential candidates to be themselves in the interview. This is really important as we have a great team at Mazars and it is important for the managers to be able to assess that not only are you capable of doing the job, but also that you will fit into the team.

In addition, thoroughly research the ACCA qualification and think about why you want to do this qualification over the other accounting qualifications.

Mazars like you to be well rounded and be capable of a good work-like balance.
Show enthusiasm for the job but also show personality so they can establish whether you would fit in well with co-workers.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself, if you try too hard then you may come across as too rehearsed.
