Application Advice:

No matter the question in the application process (from your views on advertising to what you'd put in room 101), I believe that it's crucial to demonstrate an ability to convey a message in an incredibly clear and concise manner. Cut-through is a major part of an agency's creative effectiveness and is probably a skill that is sought out as early as the application process.

Interview Advice:

Do the homework and stick to the rules! At my interview, some candidates didn't have the presentation we were asked to prepare to hand, and some did not stick to the time limit. Being prepared and sticking to the challenge's rules help you build your confidence during the process.
I also would not be too worried about speaking the most in group exercises. Waiting to speak last can often give you more time to reflect and come up with much more insightful comments.

Application Advice:

Focus on presenting yourself in your best light, not highlighting how much you know about the industry.
Obviously highlight relevant experience, but don't regurgitate a load of facts, figures, and buzzwords anyone could have Googled.

Interview Advice:

Be prepared to talk about yourself - what you're interested in, who you are etc. Not just regurgitate a load of industry facts you've learned.

Application Advice:

Don't try to be too clever. The interviewers read lots and lots of applications so it's important that the real and true you shines through and isn't masked by what you think the interviewers want to read.

Application Advice:

Curiosity is essential.

Interview Advice:

How have you considered/thought about/answered the problem in a different way to how your competitors are? Good strategy has the ability to change the game in an industry: consider Dove Real Women, or This Girl Can. That just took someone to go "Well this is how everyone else is doing it, so we can either be like them, or be something else".

Application Advice:

Remember that whilst communications is a creative industry by nature and necessity, it is fundamentally about solving business problems and making money. Clients invest in marketing to improve their sales, market share, brand profile, etc. etc. So they pay us to fix these problems using creative solutions - campaigns aren't creative for creativity's sake. It's all about effectiveness.

This is really important to remember when applying for jobs in advertising because otherwise you may look a bit naive, or be disappointed when you arrive and realise it's all about money!

Interview Advice:

M&C Saatchi employs the brutally simple philosophy through everything it does but it is also very academic. It's important to get a balance of cerebral rigour and simple insights to achieve impact.

The interview will be in three parts, one focusing on you and your attitude/approach, one on your understanding of and interest in the industry, and the third with another candidate where you will be asked to debate work and do a short role play pretending one of you is a client.

Then there is an assessment day which usually includes a solo presentation, group exercises, a group task and presentation and then a dinner.

Application Advice:

Be yourself throughout the whole process.
Read campaign, brand republic, adweek religiously.
Smile lots.

Interview Advice:

Why do you want to get into advertising?
Which target audience is this ad (shown) created for and why?
Why M&C Saatchi?

Application Advice:

Be yourself - personality is 90% of it - you can learn the rest

Interview Advice:

Same as above!

Application Advice:

I got in through an internship - not the usual application route. My advice for those hoping for a job through an internship is work hard, act as if no job is too big or too small, your job is to make the life of people working around you easier, make yourself known and make yourself indispensable.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself. Relax but also make yourself stand out from the X amount of other candidates that have been asked the same questions.

Account Executive, LIDA at M&C Saatchi Group

Application Advice:

Let your personality shine through. Working in account management is all about working well with people so when your application is reviewed, obviously we're looking to bright people but also it's "would I want to go to the pub with this person".

Interview Advice:

Know your stuff (it's a given!). We want to see that you're generally interested in advertising and are aware of ads that are out there as well as what work we're producing with our clients.

Senior Account Manager, Account Management at M&C Saatchi Group

Application Advice:

Although the application seems like lots of hard work, do it! It's worth it.
Also try to think of answers that say something about you. Don't just try to be wacky.

Senior Account Manager, Account Management at M&C Saatchi Group

Application Advice:

Be creative and have fun with it. You are not expected to know everything about advertising and if you pretend you do, you will be found out.

Make sure you check the spelling. And most importantly remember you are applying for M&C Saatchi, not Saatchi&Saatchi

Interview Advice:

Mug up on latest campaigns, your favourite brands and the company.

You will be asked questions like "what is your favourite ad?", "what is your most hated ad?"

Senior Account Manager, LIDA at M&C Saatchi Group

Application Advice:

Be yourself, completely. Agencies have different personalities and ultimately you'll be happiest where you have a personality fit. Let them decide that and risk not getting in somewhere that isn't right for you.

Interview Advice:

Again, be yourself. Recognise that ultimately advertising is a fun and creative job, so they want to see this. But they also want to see that you will take the work seriously and work hard.

Account Executive, Account Management at M&C Saatchi Group

Application Advice:

Know everything about the agency; their motto, current work, past work. Have a genuine opinion on the work; if you think it is rubbish, it is okay to admit it so long as you have an argument to back it up. Also, try and work out why the creative is as it is; what do you think the strategy was behind it? It is also a brilliant idea to be up to speed on all the latest technologies.

Interview Advice:

I was asked to sell in 2 pieces of creative work. I was given the ads and then was asked to explain the idea and why it was the way it was and why an agency should buy it. It was scary and I didn't have the right answer but as I was able to think on my feet and sell it in in any way rather than sitting in silence saying "I don't know", I think they liked me...

Application Advice:

Be yourself, don’t try to be too tongue and cheek. Keep your application simple but on point.

Interview Advice:

Be enthusiastic, honest, interesting, well informed and try to have fun.

Account Executive, Direct Marketing at M&C Saatchi Group

Application Advice:

Don't feel the need to be overly formal, it's quite a relaxed industry. Meet people at open days, career fairs, talks etc. before application if at all possible as it will help you to understand what is needed in the application and to stand out from the thousands of other applicants!

Work experience is of course very useful but don't be put off if you don't have any in the field - I didn't and still got the job.

Interview Advice:

Again, smart / casual clothing - do not turn up in a suit. The usual tips - know the company, their work and their industry, although it is mainly a conversation about you and your fit in the company.

Graduate Trainee, Account management at M&C Saatchi Group

Application Advice:

There are always a lot of applications so you need to stand out, just because it's advertising though it doesn't mean you should come across as the class clown. Ultimately we are a business and need candidates that will further the business. In applications try to avoid clichés and using examples that will have been used a hundred times before so when asked about an interesting piece of advertising or communication try to use something unique and different.

Interview Advice:

Most important of all is to prepare. Understand the company history, key partners, financial report and historic adverts that have been created. You will likely be asked for your opinion on certain adverts in a group situation. It is important to show that you are able to work in a group environment whilst also able to put forward your own opinions.
