Application Advice:

If you can demonstrate an understanding of a media agency and what they do I think it will give you an advantage. I feel like it is a relatively unknown part of the industry unless you are within it, so a basic understanding can only be seen as a good thing.

Also, I think culture is super important, so getting across a bit of personality will help you to stand out, rather than just being 1 of 100 identical looking applications.

Interview Advice:

Again, I think there's not an assumption or expectation that you know too much about the industry or the detail, so if you can demonstrate a but of understanding that is likely to be really strong.

Don't be overly formal, the atmosphere is slightly more relaxed, and if you get to interview stage, it is as much about demonstrating that you can fit in within the culture of the company, as it is demonstrating your intelligence/capabilities. So, as hard as it is, try to relax, get your personality across, and be yourself.

Finally, tied to the above, I would avoid over-dressing, I don't think it would really be held against you, but I do think it just slightly demonstrates you don't quite understand the industry you are applying for. When I had an assessment centre for my internship, there were about 6 people out of 30 who turned up in full suits, and all 6 were in the group who didn't make it to the final interviews in the second half of the day!

Application Advice:

You don't always need to have "media" experience. There is a load of training and support on that side of the agency provided by Mindshare. A lot of it is having 'relevant' experience which you can transfer skills into your new job role. Thoroughly explain how these skills are adaptable in your new role, and how they can enhance you in your new role.

Interview Advice:

Be confident and honest in your experience, research the industry and the department. Advertising has so many roles and niche areas to work in, make sure you have some understanding of this. Don't be afraid to ask questions, it helps build a rapport with you and the interviewer and sometimes makes you more memorable. No one is born with the knowledge of experience in advertising, asking questions shows you're interested to learn more.

There is loads of material available online that you can do which will give you the edge over other candidates. There are also certificates that you can get online which will help as well.

Make sure there are no mistakes on the CV. It may sound funny, but when you are applying to loads of companies looking for a job, making slight tweaks in the CV so that it fits best with the company, you will be surprised how many CV's have mistakes.

Interview Advice:

Be confident and be yourself. Prepare yourself, relax and don't be scared of the interviewer. They are as worried about hiring as you're anxious on being hired. Be positive, this helps both parties to relax and be more comfortable. You will have a better chance of leaving a positive impression.
