What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?

Write full answers and make sure you back up every statement - i.e. when exactly did you demonstrate a certain quality, what did you do, how did you do it? Use the job specification to identify what qualities are being looked for and match your answers to this.

Show clear understanding of what local government actually does and the huge range of functions it has - there's more to it than pot holes and bins! Convey your motivation for working within local government and demonstrate your understanding of how it differs to other parts of the public sector.

Do you have any interview tips?

The two assessment centres are largely competency based and can not be prepared for. Familiarise yourself with the competencies required and keep these in mind when undertaking the activities.

The interviews vary greatly depending on the council but are designed to ascertain your motivation for working within local government and your understanding of the council and the wider local government sector. Identify what exactly it is about local government that interests you and your motivation for working within the sector.
Demonstrate your understanding of the current (and future) substantial challenges facing local government and the innovative ways councils are trying to overcome these. Think ahead about where the sector is going and identify particular challenges for the individual council.

Don't be afraid to give some opinions!
