Gain as much insight about the role by utilising the company website, social media outlets and speaking to current graduates if possible. Research office locations to make sure it is a suitable fit for yourself and ensure you are prepared to move between placements if it is a rotational scheme. Tailor any competency questions to the role and company and ensure your CV is up to date and relevant to the position.
Interview Advice:
Read relevant news areas that interest yourself, even if it is only one article that you understand well so that you have something interesting and current to discuss if you get to interview stage. This will help you be memorable and stand out to the interviewer. Have a few questions prepared to ask the interviewer, it shows willing and initiative. A lot of companies today use gamification to ease the recruitment of interns and graduates. For example, I first got involved with Npower through their former Future Leaders Competition. This allowed both sides time to assess the other before committing to anything. I would highly recommend applying for these opportunities as it gives them time to get to know the real you, and you time to decide whether this is a company you really want to work for.

Show that you are willing to apply yourself and have a 'willing-to-learn' attitude. I think everyone would say their own industry is pretty complicated, and I feel that is particularly true of the energy sector. The amount of things I know now which I couldn't have thought of before are crazy - so it is important to come in appreciating that there is a lot to learn! It's also a good idea to have an rough understanding of the Domestic energy market (the big 6, Small and medium sized competitors e.g OVO and the Smart meter rollout should be enough!)

It is incredibly complicated and trying to learn all its minutiae before an interview or assessment day will just leave you feeling under pressure. You need to be one step ahead of the application process and get involved in the competitions that npower are running every year for university students. Take part in the Forecasting Challenge or the npowering weekend to get a glimpse of what it would be like to work for an energy company. Not only may you be inspired to apply for the graduate scheme with them, it will also show that you have put in extra effort ahead of the application deadline!

Think of different examples that show you do things outside of university, so clubs, societies, part time jobs, volunteering etc. don't just talk about your dissertation or third year project... everyone has to do one of them, it won't distinguish you from the other 1000 applications!

For graduates applying to an HR grad scheme at npower I would say just be yourself! Be honest, open, they are looking for people who show initiative and are pro active.
For HR specifically it's good to look up some basics before going to assessment centre so you know a little bit about how HR works. Also good to know how the energy industry works as it's likely to come up in your interview/case study!

Dont necessarily think you need to have bundles of knowledge about the energy industry- as a service graduate I didn't- I was attracted to the role because of the diversity and challenge that it offered not because of the energy industry however you learn so much and I guarantee that like me you will become passionate about the energy industry within a few days of working here!

Go in with an openmind. There are many opportunties, areas and teams you may never knew existed before joining which may excite you. The energy industry has many barriers and a different way of functioning. In some ways we are a lot slower in our developement and marketing and in other ways we are pushing forward and innovative - we may not be what you expect. The cliche old of 'be yourself'. It seems to me candidates who stand out are those who are friendly / personable but have a underlying drive which shines through and this is especially noticable at the assessment centre.
Know your numerical tests too! Practice makes perfect.
Interview Advice:
Drawback from your life experiences to give relevant examples to the questions asked. Nothing is better than fluently drawing from experience, it allows you to respond confidently to any questions asked during the interview stages and will help you stand out.
