Application Advice:

I was an internal applicant so my process was slightly different but I would suggest to revise verbal, inductive and numerical reasoning exams because that will be part of the aptitude test you will have to complete.

Interview Advice:

Research the company beforehand as you will be asked questions about it and Reed is a large company with many different departments that range from the well-known recruitment consultant side, to Reed in Partnership which deals with government tender contracts like my department which runs an NHS programme.

Interview your interviewer as well, ask about support, plans, progress opportunities etc. Reed love to internally promote where possible. Interviews are not a one-way street either, finding out if the company is the right fit for you is just as important as the company finding out if you are the right fit for it.

Application Advice:

My main piece of advice would be to write a strong cover letter to include in your application. This is part of the online application process so I would recommend having one written ahead of completing the online application so that you have already proof-read and edited the content to copy and paste into the application. The cover letter should be targeted, relevant to REED, and include reasons WHY you're applying and what makes it an exciting opportunity for you. This is an opportunity to include a bit of personality, as well as demonstrate your interest in the role. A regurgitated cover letter that's really a re-written version of a CV won't stand out, but a personalised letter that includes your aspirations and career goals will.

Interview Advice:

"Fail to prepare, prepare to fail" could not be more accurate here, and has been my mantra since my first ever interview when I was 17. My recommendations would be to; research (with time to spare, don't cram 10 minutes before the interview); prepare answers to standard competency questions; also prepare questions you want to ask; have all of this written down in front of you ready for the interview in a clear document that you can easily read, so when the time comes to answer questions or ask questions, you have something easily accessible to reference. James Reed's "Why You?" book is a fantastic resource for interview preparation and I would highly recommend leafing through this ahead of your interview too.

Be sure to emphasise skills that are applicable to the job, particularly communication and sales as you are likely to be in a sales driven environment. Also, do your research on Reed as a company and the recruitment industry as it will show the Graduate Team at Reed you are serious about your application and not just applying as it is a Graduate scheme.

Interview Advice:

There are a number of interview stages, two on the phone and one which is face to face. On the initial telephone interview, be clear and confident and make sure you prepare beforehand! The second telephone interview will likely be a test so ensure you completely understand the information and think about it analytically - don't be afraid to think outside the box! The final face to face interview will be with a senior member of staff in the business and this can seem quite daunting. However, don't be afraid of this stage as they are only trying to get an understanding of what you are like as a person and a candidate to see if you will do well in the business.

Let your passion show as this is a company full of really intelligent, hardworking and passionate people who will really easily tell if you're making it up as you go along. I don't recall getting much feedback about my initial application, or the various tests I had to do online, other than that I had done very well on the verbal and maths tests.

In the written parts required I just showed I had done my research. There is likely to be a test you will do to measure your mindset. The main thing with that is to be honest with yourself and don't try and guess the ideal answers as it's designed to spot when people are doing so. If you answer honestly and are unsuccessful at that stage don't be disheartened. The mindset stuff works and if you don't pass then you likely would not have enjoyed the working environment.

Interview Advice:

You will need to interview not just to get onto the Grad scheme, but also to get a position for your first year, usually in branch. The grad scheme process is forward thinking and will see your long term value, but the branch Managers are looking for one thing - someone who can make their team money in the year they are on their team. You need to take that into account when interviewing, and a key question you will be asked at interview with your potential manager for your first year is why you want to work in recruitment. The right answer is to make money!

Application Advice:

Make sure you want to work in a sales and targeted environment, when I first applied, I wasn't aware how targeted and sales driven recruitment was. Fortunately, this particular working environment is very well suited to my personality and I have thrived under the pressure. Also, just give it a go!

Interview Advice:

Be prepared (research the industry and REED specifically) - possibly look at competitors and in what elements they are having more success than REED currently. REED as a business, really promote innovative thinking and new ideas so they love fresh graduates bringing exciting ideas on ways to improve!

Application Advice:

Be clear to highlight your achievements against quantifiable KPIs / goals / targets on your CV. Also highlight any sales / negotiation experience you have too.

Prepare thoroughly for the online tests (numerical and verbal reasoning) - do the practice ones several times until you fully understand why each answer is correct. This will help you massively in grasping the format of the actual questions.

Interview Advice:

Be prepared with clear examples of where you have hit targets in previous jobs (or other scenarios), as well as examples of where you have had to negotiate a difficult situation with other people.

Do not be afraid to show ambition and your competitive side - this is exactly what they are looking for. Be mindful at the same time, however, as REED are not looking for cowboys and girls - they want ambitious people who can also demonstrate honesty, integrity and tact.

Application Advice:

Apply early and be open with the recruitment team. When they say if you have any questions or need any advice feel free to give us a call, they really do mean it, so take advantage of the advice and insight they have on the application process and how to prepare. They really do want you to succeed.

Interview Advice:

Ask questions at the end of the interview. It is as much a process of you choosing the company as it is them choosing you, so obviously during the interview try and present yourself as best and honestly as possible and then at the end instead of spewing off the popular questions you find on the internet, ask questions that you need to know to help you decide if you actually want the job. Not only does it show that you are taking the process seriously, but being genuine is always impressive.

Application Advice:

The application is straightforward and similar to all other graduate scheme applications out there.

Interview Advice:

There were a few role plays but they are very manageable and the interviewers make you feel at ease so as long as you do your research and are mentally prepared, you will be fine. Competency-based interview was very standard; I had a 3 to 1 panel interview and the interviewers literally just went down a list of questions on paper. The final interview with an MD was very pleasant, more like a casual conversation than an interview.

Be aware that persuasion is a massive skill that you need in recruitment; not only if you're a recruitment consultant but to work in the sector in general.

Communication is also very important to ensure you understand your clients needs and that you can provide a suitable solution to them.

You also need to be prepared to commit more than the '9-5'!

Interview Advice:

You will be asked to demonstrate your skills in asking the right questions and providing suitable solutions based on the information you have acquired.

You will also need to show that you can build relationships quickly and prioritise effectively.
