As many people are aware property is a male oriented profession. I feel that although my company manage to break this stereotype within the office (we have as many women as men in our team), outside the office there is a 'ladd-ish' feel to things. That is not to say that women are not invited, but be prepared to stand your ground either in your conversation or in your choices not to go to an event.

The main assessment day is generally about how you work in a group - do you present your own ideas whilst still listening to others. It does not matter if you are the one to take the lead in the group or if you are not, but put your views across, make note of other peoples. State clearly why you think these are good/bad views and where possible back up with evidence. There is a big focus on your personality too - smile, be personable, chat to everyone you meet.

I would say be yourself, as cheesy as that sounds! This job is as much about your personality as it is about your knowledge. If they hire you but you've been acting fake all through the interview process, you're going to struggle when it comes to day to day working. They take your personality on board, and I was chosen by my office because I was not loud and brash like some of the other candidates.
Interview Advice:
Lots of the questions at the interview asked for experiences of where I had been in team situations, and how I would deal with various situations in a working environment (i.e. dealing with a difficult client, or not getting on with a colleague).
At the assessment day there were group tasks in which it's very important to show a balance of getting your point across and listening to other people. Remember to stick to the time limits given!

You can build on skills developed elsewhere and show how they can be transferred and assist you in the role you are applying for.
Try and get on the Savills Summer Scheme or Insight Scheme. I applied to the Savills Summer Scheme (a 1 month paid internship) with only 2 weeks of work experience in the sector from 2 years previously. I got onto the Summer Scheme and completed it. A month or two after I was invited to interview for a graduate planner job and was successful. The Summer Scheme gave me the chance to know that I really wanted to work for Savills and that the company and ethos fitted my personality. It also gave Savills the chance to see if I was right for them. Either way, the Summer Scheme or Insight Scheme will give you a great deal of experience of working in a large professional planning consultancy and benefit your CV.

If you're considering a career within this field think carefully about the type of firm you would want to work for. The problem with the company is that they don't have any technical specialist, apart from Landscape, and you wouldn't get the same level of site on site experience, working with technical specialists as you would in a larger multi-consultancy.

Obtaining work experience is important to get to the interview stage. However, it is also important to be passsionate and show how and why you have particularly chosen to apply for a particular position. Many of my colleagues have varied backgrounds with experience in different sectors and a range of qualifications before focusing on their current careers. Although accredited degrees are important for the APC process, they are not the only way to draw attention to yourself.
Take any help that is offered in terms of CV/interviews/applications at careers events/university.
