You might not have heard of TJX Europe, but you’ve probably heard of our brands – TK Maxx and Homesense. We’re part of the world’s leading off-price apparel and home fashions retailer – TJX Companies, Inc.

Our story began in the United States in 1977 with the opening of two TJ Maxx stores in Massachusetts. Now, 40 years later, we have over 4000 stores in 9 countries, across 3 continents (plus 3 e-commerce sites) – all staffed by more than 249,000 associates. Combined with our unconventional off-price business model, we are a truly global retail force.

We’ve an annual global turnover of over $35bn* and our business just keeps on growing.

While our story begins in the United States, TJX Europe now has over 600 stores across Europe as well as a successful online retail business. We’re growing at a fantastic pace globally, which all makes TJX Europe the perfect place to launch your career.

We’re an international business, so there are openings for your career in a range of different countries across Europe. Maybe even further afield. With our support, you’ll be perfectly placed to launch a truly international career.

So if you’ve lived or worked in Europe, or you have a real passion to increase your European exposure, then we’d love to hear from you to help support us with our journey.

All in all, this means we can offer you one of the most exciting and inspiring European graduate careers available – so come and find out how TJX Europe can work for you.

TJX looks for people who are aware of the European market, anyway you can exemplify this will help! Whether its speaking another language, doing a year out or just reading the newspaper, knowing whats going on in international markets is always useful. TJX is not concerned by which degree you have - if at all - its more about your passion for the retail sector, function and role. Show you are curious, eager to learn and most importantly, interested in the business model of an off price retailer.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself!! TJX prides itself on hiring nice people, someone the interviewers would want to work with. Positivity, curiousity and authenticity is key during the interview. Team work is also part of the assessment day so consider how you come across when working in a group dynamic.

Read about the company before hand, including what the 'off price' model is, how it works and the culture of the company.

Interview Advice:

The job places a heavy focus on the culture of the company - focus on this more so than the technical side of the role.

Think about the kind of workplace you would benefit from (e.g flexible hours / high stress environments etc.) and don't be afraid to ask questions around these things.

If you're interested in buying - ask specific questions about progression / the role etc. to find out more from the people that work in the business.

Application Advice:

Retail experience, no matter how little, must be at the forefront of your application! Discuss in your cover letter the current retail market and how TJX fits into this, offer an opinion! Your cover letter should show a passion for retail but also understand the challenges this sector is facing. TJX is defying the odds and you should specify your knowledge of this.

Interview Advice:

Be social and talkative! When waiting with other candidates, get to know each other; this is a great way to break the ice and when interviewers come to introduce themselves there is already a positive environment.

For my assessment centre, I completed 2 interviews (one with a merchandising director and one with a buyer) as well as 1 stock planning activity and 2 group tasks.

For the interviews have a great knowledge of TJX (e.g. what countries their in, future perspectives, etc.) and the off-price model they stand for. Be able to articulate what merchandising is and how it impacts a retail business.

The stock planning task requires candidates to think about a specified product type and how much they would send to certain stores. Make sure you able to justify every decision, as you will be required to talk the buyer through your thought process in your second interview.

For group tasks, do not feel the need to jump in and take charge; concisely articulate your opinion and definitely be present throughout the conversation. A great tip would be to include other candidates; once you've finished speaking pass the conversation to another candidate who hasn't spoken yet. E.g. 'what do you think (name)?

For the first group task, we were given a character description and had to argue why our character should be saved from a disaster. Make sure you understand the description you've been given and ask for more information if you don't. Your priority is to persuade the other candidates to save you, but do not talk over one another.

The second group task involved rating a group of t-shirts based on the brand, fashion element, retail price and quality of the garment. The group must decide together and have quite quick time constraints. The group must then decide which T-shirts they would order and how much. Make sure to have an opinion, don't just rely on agreeing with everyone else and get stuck in!

Make sure with every task/question you are given, you remember every detail of it. E.g. Which T-shirts, a maximum of 3, would you order and how much? This doesn't mean you have to order 3 different T-shirts.

Be bold and take risks, but be able to justify these decisions with evidence!

Application Advice:

My advice for someone interested in applying for a position in TK Maxx is to research and read up on the company. I would particularly focus upon it's unique business model and be aware of how it compares to other conventional full price retail business models.

Interview Advice:

The interviews at TK Maxx are primarily concerned with finding out who you are as person and how well you are able to work as part of a bigger team.

One of the major things to consider when applying for TK Maxx and/or when attending an assessment centre, is to ask yourself how comfortable you feel working with uncertainty (working in the grey) on a daily basis. Whether it be with daily tasks or long term goals, as due to the fast paced nature of the business it's difficult to know all the information, outcomes, possibilities, eventualities etc. all the time, with the role requiring fast paced decision making and thinking.

Application Advice:

Definitely research the company and what makes TKMaxx different to other retailers - the Off-Price business model is new to Europe (but common in the US), so think about what this means.
The way the company trades is very reactive, so you have to be able to balance planning with thinking on your feet, and be able to own your decisions and take responsibility for them, so demonstrating examples of times you have done this would be a plus.
Be aware that you will be in Merchandising for at least a couple of years before you are able to move into Buying (if that's what you want to do), and you have to be comfortable with analysing your business and really understanding how to drive sales. Merchandising gives you a real grounding in the business and is excellent training to prepare you for other areas, but some people struggle with this side of it and so I would really think about whether that's for you before applying.

Interview Advice:

For the assessment centre tasks, demonstrate that you can think on your feet, are confident in what you are saying and back this up with the info that you have. It doesn't have to be right - people just want to know that you have thought about it and have made the best decision you can based on what's available. Try and listen to others' opinions as well, and if they raise some interesting points then you can build that into what you are saying too.

The most important thing is to be friendly and smile! All the interviewers are lovely and if you do get some tough questions, understand that they just want to get the best out of you and push you to think about things a bit more than you have. They're not trying to catch you out, just give you an opportunity to shine.
