What advice would you give to someone applying to this role?
Keep everything on your application relevant to the position you are applying for. Focus on your qualifications and current skills that you feel would be beneficial as a designer.
Make sure that all software tools that you have experience in are listed and your knowledge on each tool. If you can, try gain experience with AutoCAD, wither this is just an appreciation course or shadowing someone proficient in it.

Invest your time learning about the role of a designer. Understand what it is you do and have an understanding of the industry. A starting point would be to learn what a P&ID is, and what information you can gather from these in relation to the position you apply for.
