Make sure each desired skill/quality stated in the job summary is shown clearly in application. Demonstrate more than just academics which every candidate will likely possess such as hobbies e.g. playing a sport demonstrates ability to work as part of a team and also that you are not a robot.

Interview Advice:

Research about the company to answer at least basic questions about what services it provides and what sets it apart from competition. Plan concise answers to likely questions about previous academics/employment and how they are relevant. Don't be afraid to ask a few questions when prompted as this will help you determine whether the position is right for you and will demonstrate your interest.

Application Advice:

Be honest. Show your interest and how you've been doing things outside of work/school etc. to study information security or even something related like a programming job. Anything tech related that you have done really helps out. Also if you have any presenting skills, put them in there, as it will be a massive plus if they see that you have people skills as well as technical skills.

Interview Advice:

Make sure you know your stuff. Review your networking skills, know what NMAP is, how TCP/IP works, what is the 3 way handshake. These are all things you should have already covered. If not, you'll probably learn them on the grad scheme, but it will make you less competitive overall. Know how to program. If you can program even a little bit in some language it will be a massive help to you within this type of company. Oh, and don't lie. It will be obvious to them if you don't know your stuff when they start asking you to prove your skills. Just admit to them you don't know. You are not expected to know everything starting out.

Application Advice:

The graduate recruitment scheme is a great way to showcase your skills. They run a number of challenges every year aimed at students/graduates in order to secure an interview place. Have a go, have fun and if you don't succeed straight away then keep trying, perseverance pays off.

Interview Advice:

Have fun, don't be afraid to ask if you don't know the answer to anything. It is not always a test of your ability but to find out a base level of your knowledge.

Application Advice:

Having people in the industry you know who also work at NCC Group helps a lot. Make some blogs, code some stuff, do presentations at security conferences. Just make sure that you show you are passionate about the job.

Interview Advice:

Know your basic pentesting stuff. Whilst they may not expect you to know everything off the bat, you should be able to at least understand basic infrastructure and web pentesting concepts; although these are taught on the course it will greatly assist you if you know some stuff beforehand. Additionally, although not required, you should really know how to program as otherwise you may be spending some of your free time learning how to do this.

Hack away, hack everything, blog your work, take notes, get noticed!

I suggest getting involved in online hacking challenges some of which are:
Hack This Site, Cyber Security Challenge and areyouan.ncc.ninja.

Interview Advice:

If you are passionate about this area of the industry the interviewer will notice!

I had a bad cop good cop interview, first half was a formal introduction then a security consultant came in and assessed my hacking knowledge by getting me to hack a few web sites and talk about simple hackingpen' testing methodologies.

Application Advice:

Try the Graduate Challenge at: https://areyouan.ncc.ninja/ . This is a great indicator of you current skill ability and you are guaranteed an interview if you pass all levels.

Interview Advice:

Do your research. You will be caught out quickly if you don't know your stuff in the technical assessment so don't bluff it. You're much better off admitting that you don't know how to do X but you can do Y.

Be yourself. Try as much as you can to relax in the interview so that your true personality shines through. This will really help your interviewer know how well you'll fit into the team. If you like a laugh, the chances are you will fit :)
