Application Advice:

Your application form needs to stick very, very closely to our key competencies. If you are tempted to include an example which shows a competency you have already shown elsewhere, don't, use the question to show something you haven't shown yet.

Interview Advice:

Competency based interview initially- make sure you know what they are! When asked commercial questions, think about the relevant company's priorities and whether what you are describing meets their priorities, or affects them in any way.

Try to avoid saying the same thing everyone else does, make yourself stand out. However, the caveat to that is there are some boxes you need to tick like general commercial awareness.

Interview Advice:

Be up to date on everything about the firm but also be yourself. No one is going to trick you so as long as you take your time when giving answers and think everything through you will be successful.

Application Advice:

The firm uses a competancy based interview process, so make sure you follow the S.T.A.R. structure in your answers. Tailor your answers so that all of the competancies are displayed rather than giving two examples of the same competancy. The firm has a very up to date grad rec website so use that to find out as much as possible about what its really like working here.

Interview Advice:

The structure of CMS is unusual, and showing during interviews that you know how it operates will be impressive. The upcoming merger with Dundas and Wilson will also change the capabilities of the firm so showing you understand how it will do so will show that you understand the firm and the direction it's going in.

Attention to detail in respect of every aspect of the application. Being a solicitor requires a hawk eye when it comes to details, and typos and inconsistencies in application forms will be spotted.

Application Advice:

Be yourself and be honest. There is no point in getting a training contract based on false promises or the person that you think they want you to be. What works is showing your personality and if you fit the culture then that is best for everyone.

Interview Advice:

The usual questions about when you have demonstrated teamwork or how you handle a stressful situation. My advice is to prepare some examples beforehand. They don't need to be big ones, you could just use an example like when the printer didn't work and you had to get something done urgently and how you coped and what steps you took to resolve it. It is better to give real life examples of when you worked in a bar/restuarant than trying to fake an example that sounds strained and you can't elaborate on.

Spend some time really thinking about your responses to the application questions, particularly if there are competency based questions. Think of some really good examples and use the STAR technique to form your answers as it provides a good structure.

Was mainly asked competency based questions, but apparently it has now changed to scenario questions.

Come up with a niche news story - not a really obvious one.

Prepare for the fact that the interview process is all day and will cover, interview, competency, negotiation and presentation skills.

What do you know about our sector groups.
