Make sure you know what the job role entails before applying. When I applied, as part of the application there were questions about 'what you think the job role means'. If you answer these well you will stand out.

Application Advice:

I would advise candidates to apply if they are comfortable with financial concepts already - although there is training, this is more "orientation" rather than technical. They have never hired a grad with an arts degree.

Interview Advice:

In the written application we had to choose a bond to invest in. We were then quizzed on our choice in the interview. Also asked things relating to my degree (Economics) such as "what is the Taylor rule". And then some questions on my previous experience with fixed income e.g. explain how CDS works. Also were given six balance sheets and asked to guess which industry each company was from.

Application Advice:

For those interested in the Technology stream, I found that they didn't mind at all if you have no previous experience with finance. I was quite up front about the fact that I knew very little about the industry (I graduated in Computer Science). In my application I made the point that I appeared to fit the requirements of the role quite well and that it would be a great opportunity for me to put into practice what I already know, whilst learning about a company and industry that I'm interested in.

Interview Advice:

The process seemed quite standard compared with other applications I was making at the time. It culminated in an assessment day at one of the offices with roughly 12 other people. I believe 4 hires were made that day, myself included. My approach to the day was that I really had nothing to lose and it was actually a victory in itself to be given the opportunity to come up to the office and meet some of the team and other applicants. With this in mind I was actually quite relaxed on the day, though I could see some of the others were a little more tense than I was.

I was asked to give a 10-minute presentation that I'd prepared on a particular topic, which was only to two people so it naturally turned into a discussion afterwards. Then I had a more formal interview with two other members of the team, which was a little more probing.

Lunch was provided and in the afternoon there were some further activities including a group activity in front of some of the recruitment team, which was actually quite fun!

A few days later I got the call to say that they were making me an offer.

Application Advice:

Know why you want to go to the buy side and what makes Fidelity different. Show some research and intellect and be a genuine, friendly person. Arrogance and bravado will not go down well. Be prepared to defend your views, but don't be stubborn.

Interview Advice:

The standard questions: Why Asset Management, why Fidelity, what motivates you. You have to give a presentation which you prepare for in the weeks beforehand, so this should be very comfortable! There was a group exercise and an on the spot case study too. In the interview it's more about getting to know you and the conversation can go in any direction really!

Application Advice:

1) Be honest.
2) Do research on Fidelity - we are not Fidelity Investments, we are Fidelity International (they are the American sister company - if you have an American passport apply for them... we fully demerged around 2 years ago). Our Peter Lynch is Anthony Bolton - try reading his book(s) (and read Peter Lynch's too).
3) We are not stupid. We can tell when you've copied and pasted an application. The applications are read by graduates (I have personally read >50 in last 6m)... we know the tricks. We were in your shoes pretty recently.
4) There is no real hiring cap for the internship/grad program etc. If you are good, you will get hired. The benefits of being private mean we really do think long term and snap talent up at every opportunity.
5) Think of something interesting to ask. The interviewer will have spoken to 3-4 other candidates that day... he/she will be bored... he/she will be thinking about all the work they've not done. The same goes for the application... don't tell me you love Warren Buffett (he's not a mutual fund anyway, he's mostly private equity), don't tell me you've been reading the FT since you were 5 etc. think of something interesting and compelling. If it's the first thing that springs to mind, other people have probably thought about it too... the same goes for picking stocks in general.
6) If it's not clear already, actually read some books on investing. It will be apparent if you haven't.
7) Remember that your interviewer had likely been out of University for 5-10 years plus and totally immersed in the investment world. They are likely successful. They are likely self-confident (possibly overly so). They likely overestimate their own abilities in every walk of life... and bearing all that in mind probably have expectations too high for most candidates to satisfy. Moral of the story: over prepare.
8) Do not forget to be pleasant, courteous, use correct grammar/spelling and strike a balance between flaunting your achievements and arrogance.
9) We do not offer investment banking services and are not looking to hire wannabe bankers.... this appears in about every third application. Automatic rejection.

Interview Advice:

Same as application advice.

Application Advice:

Each role involves quite a lot of mathematical and technical work so they like to hire people with finance/engineering/maths backgrounds.

Interview Advice:

Why fixed income specifically (and not equities). The interviews are centred around the bond trade idea you write in the online application so know this inside out. They also tell you to look at balance sheets of different companies and guess which industry they come from.

Understand the company culture before applying. It is worth going to a company event beforehand to get a sense of what is important to the company. Also realise that Fidelity is not an investment bank! Avoiding stupid errors always helps.

Interview Advice:

Typical competency questions but always relate it back to how you think that would positively help you when at Fidelity, or that's why you want to work at Fidelity. Practice online testing and assessment centres which involve a group exercise, presentation as well as interviews.

Application Advice:

Personality is important so be friendly, inquisitive and make an effort to get to know the people around you.
Ability and quick thinking are more important than having a background in finance, but make sure you demonstrate an interest in and knowledge of asset management, even if you have no relevant qualifications.

Interview Advice:

In a group interview, you are looking to guide the group to a consensus and achieve your aims through team work, rather than being the most aggressive person at the table. Let other people have their chance to talk.

Give presentations and answers in a logical order, don't rush and present yourself well - stand up, speak clearly, smile!

Make sure you have examples to back up every point you make - whether this is about you and your skills, or about your knowledge of finance.
