Application Advice:

Do some research on how to make your CV attractive and concise - most universities offer services for this, or just google it.
If there's a coding test (i.e. for a developer) don't worry about optimising unless it says explicitly in the question. You might end up fiddling with a working solution so much that it no longer works (this happened to me - it didn't even compile in the end! I walked them through my thinking though when asked about it).

Interview Advice:

Don't try to blag anything in the interview, be honest if there's something you don't know. No one can know everything.
One of my answers to a situational question was literally "Well I'd probably just google how to do that" followed by what I'd look for and how I'd proceed after that - in a workplace environment you should use all the resources at your disposal.
Also ask them questions about details, even if you already know the details. People like talking about what they do, especially in the technology industry where people are often very passionate about it.

To any budding software developers out there - go for it! I have friends who got graduate roles doing development in other companies who are no where near as happy as I am here.

Application Advice:

Make sure you have a portfolio of projects that you've worked on and link to it on your CV. You'll be working in a team in this role, so write about your experiences of working in a team, and what went well and why. Any examples of changes of requirements and planning/estimation of deliverables when working on projects will earn you extra points.

Interview Advice:

A lot of my application advice could also go here. Don't hold back! You'll be doing a few code tests as part of the interview process. But don't worry, there's lots of languages that you can use, even those that you won't be using in your job (and you won't lose any points for choosing a different language). Stay calm and make sure you understand exactly what the challenges require you to do. Be prepared to talk about those experiences of working in a team.

Application Advice:

Fidessa runs on graduates, so usually you want a 2:1 in a technical field. Some roles aren't necessarily asking for someone technical straight off the bat, though, so as long as you can show you're well organised and have good attention to detail, they may give you a chance.

Interview Advice:

There are technical tests, depending on role, that may be anything from coding questions to logical reasoning tests. Do some research on the financial industry before applying, it will stand you in good stead if you can show you have some enthusiasm. Have examples of innovation and creativity at the ready.

Connectivity Operations Engineer, Connectivity at Fidessa

Application Advice:

Approach tasks and questions with a can-do attitude.

Interview Advice:

I was asked to complete an online coding test before I progressed to the interview stage. The interview stage consisted of two more coding tests and a face to face interview. For a developing role Fidessa is more interested in your logic and coding skills than your knowledge of financial markets; you are trained up on the latter when you start work.

Graduate Software Developer, Development at Fidessa

Application Advice:

I applied through a graduate recruitment company, only my CV was required. Primary focus of that was on my Computer Science degree at University - highlighting the skills I learnt there and how they would be applicable to my career such as organisation and technical ability.

Interview Advice:

Two-stage process: first a programming exercise at home that asks you to write code to fulfill the needs of a particular scenario paying close attention to ensuring that all cases are considered correctly and that code complexity is appropriate - not writing an O(n^2) algorithm if it can be done in O(n) for example.
If successful you then take a slightly longer but in the same style programming exercise at their offices followed by a face-to-face interview if you achieve the required pass mark.
The interview is relaxed yet formal and most of my interview was focused upon my final year project at University describing how it worked, what research I had to do, how I overcame difficulties etc. I brought printed screenshots of my program and of the work behind it which helped immensely.

Application Advice:

As long as you have a decent degree or experience in IT/programming, it is fairly possible to get to the Competency Test stage. If you practice these, it is fairly easy to get into an interview. Interviews are the hard part.

Interview Advice:

Be confident in your problem solving abilities. It is more about the questions you ask to find the answer rather than knowing the answer. The company will train you on all the more technical skills to give you the situational information you need, so what they are looking for is the ability to analyse information, ask the right questions to get more information and how you get to your conclusions. They prefer a quality candidate who is able to learn rather than what they know.

Interview Advice:

There are no cheat codes for interviews, it's just a matter of knowing *how* to talk about your experiences and achievements. Software development jobs usually involve working in a team, so make sure you can talk about those times when you worked in a team and why you were a valuable member of it, but also how the team dealt with disputes or changes in requirements.

Make it clear that you want to be at Fidessa for many years and that you are confident they will be good for your development and career. Do this by researching and talking about Fidessa, their training programs, their HR policies, their high ratings on sites like this -JobCrowd.
The interviews are long and thorough so make sure you can explain your past and planned future in great detail. Its ok to have made mistakes in the past as long as you can explain what you learnt etc.

Application Advice:

You will need some programming experience, but it needn't be extensive if you can demonstrate an aptitude for problem solving and desire to learn.

Interview Advice:

The interview involves some programming tasks that can be accomplished with fairly basic knowledge. The skill lies in understanding the problem and framing it in a way that can be addressed with a short piece of simple, efficient code. There will be a chance to discuss your solutions afterwards so you can show how you could have improved on your code. If successful at this stage, some fairly standard competency based questions follow.

It is such a great place to work - I would certainly encourage any graduate to apply. You will need to have strong technical skills, plus a friendly 'people-focused/ collaborative' personality. Fidessa love collaboration.

I would also suggest going a step further than just the usual, technical research and investigate the company values - mention how these align with your own values (only if they do, of course!) The interviewers are really down to earth, so don't be worried.
