Application Advice:

Try to be yourself as much as possible. During the interview process they will look for like minded people who share the values of the company. Therefore look at the company values and identify what you have done that really demonstrates that you have these, and truthfully acknowledge that if you don't share these views another company may be mutually better suited.

Interview Advice:

One of the most difficult tasks is the group exercise, not because of the content, but due to working well with the other candidates. Going into such a group task you should already know that you need to work collaboratively, but you need to do this in a way that showcases your abilities without overpowering the other candidates. The applicants that don't get past this stage are the ones that overshadow the others and do not consider and allow the others to speak.

Interview Advice:

Make your interview personal to you - give examples nobody else could give in order to stand out and be remembered. They want to know what kind of person you are to work with, as well as if you're capable of the type of work.

Application Advice:

Make sure you are fully aware of the day-to-day jobs, and of how tough it is to work and study at the same time. The study especially comes as a shock to most people.

Interview Advice:

It is a very people focussed company, and so while it is obviously important to know why you want to be an accountant, the dividing factor will be someone who fits in with the company values.

Application Advice:

I would advise that you should research the industry and get in touch with other graduates either at university or a careers fair, to understand what the job entails.

Interview Advice:

Be honest, and don't try to be overbearing as this can go against you - the interviewers are searching for team players.

Application Advice:

Think about your answers carefully and take your time making sure it says exactly what you want it to say.

Get someone to proofread it for you to ensure you don't trip yourself up at the first hurdle with spelling mistakes etc.

Make it clear why you want to work for the company and why the specific role you are applying for. Focus on your own experiences - what you have done and how you did what you did - and relate this fits in with our CLEARR values.

Interview Advice:

Before you get to the interview make sure you do your research!!
Research the firm, service lines, your specific role and what is happening in the world at the moment that could have an impact on our business and our clients.
Again, be clear on why you want to work for Grant Thornton and your chosen role.
Have some new examples of things you have done at work/school/hobbies etc. relating to each CLEARR value.

Application Advice:

To be prepared to work hard, as the main focus in my opinion is to make sure you get the study and work balance right, especially throughout the first few years. To make sure one knows what an Auditor does because if it's not interesting for you, then you shouldn't apply solely because it's a good opportunity.

Interview Advice:

Grant Thornton is very open in the mindset when it comes to employing people. They do not look for an accountancy background or for you to know what an auditor does inside out. However you need to show your interest in this sector, how your work character fits with the values of Grant Thornton and how your personal character and values are suitable for becoming a professional with GT.

I would recommend researching about all the services that GT offers - this is incredibly important as at an assessment day, you can really show off your knowledge and think of all the different teams at GT that could help in various example scenarios.

Interview Advice:

Again, I would recommend researching! This includes researching the role, the career opportunities and the qualification you will be studying towards. I would also recommend thinking of situations where you have demonstrated GT's values and try to use different examples for each e.g. from school, work experience or travelling etc!

Make sure you have a good understanding of the Actuarial exams (i.e. what kind of topics they cover and how much of a commitment the qualification is) and the type of work carried out by actuarial consultancies, so that you can demonstrate a specific interest in this.

Understanding what Grant Thornton has to offer compared to the big four, for example, will also set you in good stead.

Interview Advice:

In hindsight I think the most important qualities the assessors are looking for are sociability, enthusiasm and a bit of common sense! It's completely understandable that you won't know the ins and outs of the work we do, but you want to come across as someone who would be pleasant to work with, i.e. easy to talk to, relaxed, comfortable asking/answering questions.

Be truthful in your application and also research the role you are applying for in great detail. Furthermore it helps to state why you have applied for the office you have chosen (e.g. what connections you have to the city and why you think you want to be part of it). Also make sure to elaborate on the roles you took on at school/university/previous jobs which show that you can both be a leader when expected and also be able to work as part of a team when needed. Grant Thornton are looking for people who are willing to learn on the job and contribute to their economy so make sure to get this across.

Interview Advice:

Be clear and direct with the interviewers. Make sure you are calm and collected, as being nervous often comes across as being cold. Furthermore, in the group exercises make sure to maintain a balance between being forthcoming and involved and also letting the others get their point of view across. Application Advice:

Try and get some work experience, even if it is just a week here and there our different accountancy, banking or industry firms so that the application can show situations that you have been involved with, and this will greatly help when answering competency based questions. It is good to have a range of different scenarios, from academic examples to work life experiences. This will then give you more to talk about in your application, either why you want to work for Grant Thornton, or why accountancy, rather than just giving a generic answer.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself! Especially when it come to the assessment day, the assessors can tell who is coming across genuinely. Grant Thornton really buys into the person, and therefore doesn't require the most academic, most skilful graduates, but people who they feel are well rounded and have potential to succeed. In audit, tax and advisory, you deal directly with clients. So communication and social skills are a key factor, and can sometimes get you further than just having great academic history.

As far as audit/accountancy firms go, Grant Thornton undoubtedly provide much more support for workload (i.e. they don't shove too much on you too fast) which is reflected in their lower trainee attrition rate. Application Advice:

You can't rely on your academics alone anymore. Everyone applying will have a 2:1 from a good university. You need to be more, don't be afraid to talk about yourself outside of academia.

Interview Advice:

Keep calm. No one expects you to be an expert on accounting. You need to show an interest, and an ability to logically process information. If you're given a case study, draw reasonable conclusions from the data, that is what they want, not someone blabbering about how being a geography student means they didn't know what to do with the information, it will be generic. Use your common sense.

Understand that the first 2 years will not be particularly enjoyable, especially if you are studying for an accountancy qualification alongside your work. But the long-term rewards are worth the pain.

Interview Advice:

Majority of the interview is competency based - i.e. "talk about a time when you showed good leadership" etc etc, so prepare for questions like this covering all scenarios.

Make sure you practice some aptitude tests before taking them, as they can be quite tricky if you do not know what to expect.
