“We’re a global engineering, management and development consultancy focused on guiding our clients through many of the planet’s most intricate challenges.”

The needs of the world’s population are changing fast. Our network of experts, active in 150 countries, finds opportunities in complexity, turning obstacles into elegant, sustainable solutions. By looking at problems from a fresh angle, we aim to add value at every stage, for our clients, our employees – and the lives we touch every day.

Our engineers, project and programme managers have taken lead roles in the world’s highest profile infrastructure and development projects. Yet design and management are just the tip of a deep iceberg. Our global team is comprised of internationally recognised environmentalists, planners, economists, project finance advisors, cost consultants, business strategists and more. Whatever your career goals are, you can be confident that Mott MacDonald will help you meet your ambitions, and beyond.

Being employee-owned allows us to choose the work taken on and focus on the issues that are important. Independent in thought and action, we do what’s genuinely right, not what is easy either for our clients or the company.

Our award-winning graduate programme will support you in gaining experience across all core areas, developing your technical skills and knowledge with the support of a professional mentor and a dedicated learning and development team. Mott MacDonald’s professional development schemes are accredited and enable you to gain chartered status with your chosen institution through providing opportunities to work on some of our most exciting projects. At the start of your career you will enrol onto the Mott MacDonald Academy, a four- year development programme for all entry-level professionals that runs alongside your professional development scheme. The programme will introduce you to key business and commercial competencies, helping you to drive your career forward with Mott MacDonald.

Make sure you demonstrate that you are genuinely interested in the sector or a particular career.

Interview Advice:

You don't need to study for the interview but make sure you know the technical fundamentals as well as terminology related to the particular type of work you will be doing. I would recommend doing a bit of research about the office (projects and clients this particular office serves or works with) that you would work in) . Ask questions at the end of the interview.

Application Advice:

- Pay very close attention to both CV and cover letter.
- Get as much advice as you possibly can from your University careers office or industry professionals on CV and cover letter writing.
- Always give specific examples of where you have developed knowledge and experience. It is no use to simply say you have a skill or know something, demonstrate how you gained that knowledge or skill in the first place.
- Be as flexible on the location you will be based as you possibly can. Even if it is not ideal for you, it is much easier to move location within the company after you have established yourself as a good employee.
- By all means showcase your academic achievements, but do not focus on them too much. It is also important to highlight extra-curricular activities and achievements.
- If you are applying for an engineering role, do some research on the process of becoming a chartered engineer, and say that it is something you intend on embarking on. Demonstrating knowledge and commitment to chartership will definitely make you stand out.

Interview Advice:

- If you are applying for an engineering role, do some research on the process of becoming a chartered engineer, and say that it is something you intend on embarking on. Demonstrating knowledge and commitment to chartership will definitely make you stand out.
- Say that you understand that your own career development is your own responsibility and that you understand that you will be expected to take responsibility for your own work from early on. While every company knows that you obviously need a considerable amount of guidance as a fresh graduate, no company will hire someone who expects to be spoon fed everything. It is good to demonstrate that you know and understand this.

Practise psychometric tests ahead of talking the application tests - there are plenty to be found online and can help you to understand what the tests are looking for.
Get your CV sorted, don't let it be too long winded and aim for it to be essentially a summary of highlights - don't get bogged down with tangential details as the people looking at the CVs are busy and will be looking for key qualities. As long as your base qualifications and experience are good then the nitty gritty can be discussed in the interview.

Interview Advice:

For engineers, drawings will provide an important talking point - even if drawings aren't necessarily correct they help to show an understanding of the processes involved in design.
Answer questions honestly and be frank about what you are looking for, above all be enthusiastic. I openly admitted in my interview that I had almost no electrical background but expressed my willingness to learn and that got me the electrical engineering job.

Application Advice:

Take your time and complete all sections of the application form thoroughly. By taking time now you save yourself time later on in the process.

If your application involves a series of psychometric tests, look for practise tests online and get plenty of practise in prior to starting your real test. For these particular tests practise makes perfect.

Interview Advice:

Interview was very informal. Plenty of questions about you as a person to begin with. The interview is part of a two way process, it is a vital way for the company to learn more about you and for you to learn more about the company. Be open and honest in all your answers and you will get the most out of the interview. Nothing is designed to trip you up, it just enables the recruiter to gauge whether or not you have the skills applicable to the job role.

The technical part of the interview consists of a series of questions relevant to both your academic studies and the job role in question. If you do not know the answer to the question or want any clarification then please say so. Do not try and create a false answer.

Application Advice:

Get some experience or networking contacts! I think the short-term placement I undertook was invaluable for demonstrating that I was reliable and capable, whilst also reassuring me that it was an organisation I would be happy in. I applied during the final year of my BSc and was not invited for interview. However, after enrolling for my MSc and undertaking a short-term placement, I seemed to breeze through the following year's recruitment process.

Interview Advice:

Obviously I was nervous but I'd prepared well so I was quietly confident. I was interviewed by two senior female colleagues and overall the interview was quite informal/conversational and I felt welcomed. I was able to answer the brief technical questions competently, so much of the time was spent discussing my motivation for and understanding of the role, and ideas for career ambitions. I can't remember many specific questions but I do recall that I did some internet research before the interview and the questions I found others had been asked were very similar to those I faced, so the prep helped. Overall I think I was in the interview for something like 60-90 minutes.

Interview Advice:

This is your chance to show that you are personable. Remember that interviewers have asked you in because they think you have the right stuff on paper, and they are likely most interested to know if you would fit in with the team. Day to day this will involve the soft side of your character - who you are, what you enjoy, how you relate to people. Then, they may ask some probing questions to make sure you can take the pressure within a high profile consulting environment. Be prepared to show grit and focus.

Take your time in answering the questions in the application process. The company is not looking for the finished article at this level. You are not expected to know everything. You just have to prove to the interviewer that you are keen to learn and to develop yourself. If you're keen to put in the work to benefit yourself and the organisation, you'll stand out as an individual they can develop to achieve the aspirations of both the company and the individual.

Interview Advice:

The interview was conducted in a relaxed, and informal manner. I was not expected to know everything about the role I was applying for. My advice is: be honest with what you don't know - and ask lots of questions to fill these gaps in your knowledge.

Application Advice:

Choose a specific sector you want to go in and apply for a role within it. Do not worry about making the wrong choice, once you're in, you're able to change to another sector if you feel the one you have chosen is no longer the right choice. There are plenty of job positions available within the company; your employer wants the best for you and the company. Do not be afraid to discuss your ambitions, as you will be heard.

Interview Advice:

Prepare for the interview: get some information about the company, make sure you understand what they do. You will be asked about your experiences: try to practice in front of a friend or a mirror to avoid being silent at the interview, nobody likes a one word answer in these cases. The interviewers are trying to find out as much as they can about you in about an hours time: it does not work in your favour to be silent. Ask HR if you need to prepare something and what type of interview you will be having: is it an assessment centre? Technical? Informal? Search on Google for previous interview questions, you might find some very useful tips and information.

1. General Questions - Where do you see yourself in 5 years? An example of when you worked effectively in a team.
2. Technical Questions (not very complex) - What work have you done in sustainability? Could you give a summary to your dissertation.

The general questions are mandatory but then the technical questions become more of a discussion. This makes it a lot less formal and makes you stress less.
