Application Advice:

If the application process involves answering a series of question, make sure your answers are relevant to the company's values, ethics and mission statement.

Interview Advice:

Ensure you've done your research on the company you are interviewing for. It is often the first question asked in an interview and it is a relatively easy one, so use this opportunity to settle your nerves and demonstrate your enthusiasm.

Application Advice:

Get your application in early and be sure to have it looked at by your university's careers department. It's easy to think that you've nailed it, but there are a lot of ways to go wrong. Following this, practice the psychometric tests as much as possible - it's an easy pass if you do.

Interview Advice:

Informal interview, my interviewers seemed much more concerned with getting to know me as a person than they did technical skills. It helps to have both up to scratch.

Application Advice:

The company is not looking for the finished article at this level. You are not expected to know everything. You just have to prove to the interviewer that you are keen to learn and to develop yourself. If you're keen to put in the work to benefit yourself and the organisation, you'll stand out as an individual they can develop to achieve the aspirations of both the company and the individual.

Interview Advice:

The interview was conducted in a relaxed, and informal manner. I was not expected to know everything about the role I was applying for. My advice is: be honest with what you don't know - and ask lots of questions to fill these gaps in your knowledge.

Application Advice:

Choose a specific sector you want to go in and apply for a role within it. Do not worry about making the wrong choice, once you're in, you're able to change to another sector if you feel the one you have chosen is no longer the right choice. There are plenty of job positions available within the company; your employer wants the best for you and the company. Do not be afraid to discuss your ambitions, as you will be heard.

Interview Advice:

Prepare for the interview: get some information about the company, make sure you understand what they do. You will be asked about your experiences: try to practice in front of a friend or a mirror to avoid being silent at the interview, nobody likes a one word answer in these cases. The interviewers are trying to find out as much as they can about you in about an hours time: it does not work in your favour to be silent. Ask HR if you need to prepare something and what type of interview you will be having: is it an assessment centre? Technical? Informal? Search on Google for previous interview questions, you might find some very useful tips and information.

Mott MacDonald are open with the idea that you may not know a lot about the role your going into but show that you have certain qualities which tick the box. Communication, Teamwork, Mathematics, etc. Don't be put off if you don't think you may have all the areas of learning they ask for.

Interview Advice:

Do not get too stressed. The interview was comprised of 2 sections.
1. General Questions - Where do you see yourself in 5 years? An example of when you worked effectively in a team.
2. Technical Questions (not very complex) - What work have you done in sustainability? Could you give a summary to your dissertation.

The general questions are mandatory but then the technical questions become more of a discussion. This makes it a lot less formal and makes you stress less.

Application Advice:

Very friendly, personable staff who made the interview process relaxed and enjoyable, it became more of an interesting two way discussion rather than a formal interview. My application process was relatively straightforward and simple.

Interview Advice:

At a graduate level, interviews are more focused toward personality and soft skills as opposed to technical knowledge. I did not have to go through the graduate scheme process however, which I believe involves numerical assessment etc. Have questions to ask and be interested in the company and the work that they do, their projects and what you specifically will be likely to do - they already have an idea of what projects and jobs they want the applicant to be doing.

Get involved early on and show a willingness to work with other more senior colleagues who are technically very adept and good mentors to learn from in the early stages of the job. Take advantage of as many opportunities that are offered as even the most obscure ones provide invaluable experience going forward.

Interview Advice:

Engage with the interviewers - they will want to determine if you are someone they would want to work with, not how much you know (you learn 90% of the stuff on the job, not in university).

Do adequate preparation - know the work that the division you're applying for does and have a good idea of what other teams in the division do as well. The psychometric tests which took place before the interview are not too difficult but require quick thinking and good concentration so be properly refreshed on the day. Application Advice:

To gain Chartership, you need to ask for the work, as it won't just land on your desk. Talking to line manger and delegate engineer will ensure you get experience you need.
In terms of civil engineering in general, look at sectors that are in demand. At present, railways and water are in demand and it looks likely that roads will be booming soon.
At the same time demand for sectors such as energy (especially nuclear) have dwindled, whilst commercial (high rise buildings) are hit and miss. It is always good to see what is being built at the moment and government policy. Later, you can request to change sector once you have foot in door, but spend at least a year in the sector you start in.

Interview Advice:

Be honest when giving interviews. The interviewers can tell if you are embellishing or fabricating answers. It is better for them to know where you are at that moment in time so that they can determine what they need to do to develop you (e.g. start on design calculations, experience on site).
