Application Advice:

RB is about action, doing things off your own back/taking ownership, and overachieving: so make sure that instead of simply talking about things you've done when answering questions, that you focus on outcomes... what you actually achieved as a result of YOUR actions.

Interview Advice:

You need to embody energy, self-confidence, and focus on over-achievement and the outcomes/results of your actions. On another note, unlike other FMCG giants RB loves an entrepreneurial spirit - instead of it being a worrying sign that you might leave the company, RB sees it as essential to innovation.

Territory Manager, Commercial graduate trainee at RB

Application Advice:

Make sure you demonstrate an understanding of the businesses core values and where we want to be.

Interview Advice:

Follow the STAR approach for answering competency-based questions (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
Don't worry if you don't know the answer, a lot of it is how you respond to certain situations.
You might not have all the relevant technical experience but if you've got the right attitude, that's what really counts. The rest you can learn.
Be prepared to be asked random questions that are designed to throw you off-guard and test your ability to rationally think about a response - e.g. how many people cycle to work in the UK?

Not very original advice but be yourself. If you are not successful being 100% genuine and honest in your answers then it's really for the best. If you are successful, then you can be assured it is a place for you.

Questions I was asked:

- An example when I challenged an authority.

- An example when I worked in a team but had to challenge views of the others.
- Why would you fit in at RBS?

Application Advice:

Read up on the opportunities available to you for your job role and see if it offers what you want in your career development. For example, having the availability to do ACA was a key selling point for me applying for this role alongside being a banking institution rather than the typical Big 4.

Interview Advice:

Prepare well in advance is a given, but read up on the banks values and apply them throughout the recruitment process as these are key. Be confident but also be open and honest so your personality shows - they want to see that you are right for the role but also look at you as a person and if you will adapt and fit into the bank by adding value.

Application Advice:

Prepare for your interviews. There are two areas you need to cover, personal experiences and RBS (history and department you're applying to). Have a list of good personal experiences, challenges etc. they will ask you to mention at least 3 in the telephone interview, and even more in the assessment center. Secondly, you need to know a bit about your department, what they do, what they could potentially be working on in the future, things like ApplePay etc. You also need to know the history of RBS, especially the other brands within the RBS Group. Mentioning Williams and Glynn, the new bank RBS will create this year would be a very good point to bring up!

Research and read up as much as you can on the company website. The more you know about what the company is looking for when hiring, the more you will increase your chances of getting a job.

Show a desire and passion for what you are applying to.

Interview Advice:

If you don't know something in the interview/assessment center, don't panic. Try and think through what you need to do and give a reasonable answer.

The questions I had were mainly situational based - e.g. if you had two conflicting priorities that had the same deadline, how would you tackle this issue?

I think future questions will be more focused around giving examples of a time that you have demonstrated our values. E.g. give us an example of when you did the right thing.

Be honest. Identify in yourself areas for improvement and expand on this by explaining how you have a keen interest in developing yourself to begin a long career with the bank. Do not be afraid to confront the difficulties the bank has faced. RBS is trying to change for the better and they need people who are fully aware of past failings to ensure we do not make the mistakes again.

Interview Advice:

If you don't know something, say so. They will see through you if you try to blag it, instead ask questions and try to learn whilst you're there. Take notes. Ask plenty of questions around career development. Look up the bank's visions for 2020 and relate it to your own personal values.
