The team I work in is very supportive. If I am ever stuck on anything, it is easy to ask one of them or my manager for assistance. I used to have only basic IT skills and now I am proficient in Excel and central data reporting systems. I help people with problems every day and I do a lot of data investigation.
The work-life balance is good for my specific role. Mostly, I am 9 to 5 and I have lunch at 12 every day. This means I can perform well during the day, refresh myself every evening and feel positive about the rest of the week.

Think of the interview as a conversation and this will help you relax more. I find the more relaxed I was during my interview, allowed me to be chatty and more personable with the interviewer. I think it's important to show that you demonstrate great customer and colleague communication. I was asked a series of questions that reflected on my communication, customer service, independent and teams skills, as well as, management skills. I answered each question by using simple scenarios and I found this made the interview flow well. Interview Advice:

Assessment centre. Come prepared to do unseen assessments and presentations. They will be business-like but require no prior knowledge in the field, so practice presenting with little preparation time and areas outside your comfort zone.

Within the interview make sure to give applied examples for every question. They are not looking for a wealth of work experience, but an ability to relate things to uni, school, sports, hobbies, etc will help you out.

Application Advice:

In your CV, show that you are interested in how things work. The company want people who are curious. They are not looking for a specific skill set when a person enters the graduate scheme: they want people who demonstrate a willingness to adapt and develop their knowledge. Examples of teamwork are useful, as well as an openness to meeting new people.
I had to perform an online assessment, which was a job simulation. It tested problem-solving, communication and maths skills. There was no time limit and there was plenty of information to guide my decisions and written responses.
In preparation, perhaps revise percentages and basic sums. Be concise in your written answers. I wrote little more than a couple of sentences for most of them.

Interview Advice:

Make sure you do your research before attending the assessment centre. Spend at least a couple of hours familiarizing yourself with the company structure and its CSR activities. Also, read a couple of recent news stories concerning DHL to reference (those that are positive/interesting from a business perspective).
In terms of interview questions, I was asked to demonstrate an interest in technology. In response, I talked about my hobby of writing music using computer software. Additionally, I was asked about occasions when I had led a team, experienced setbacks and devised actions towards a particular goal.
The assessors reward candidates who ask questions and contribute to discussions. However, try not to talk over people. Demonstrate that you are a good listener as well as someone who can think creatively and steer a team.

Application Advice: Get involved in extra curricular events and training which will make you stand out from the crowd. I attended the UN Global Impact's Global Goals Roadshow as this was something that interested me and was applicable to a range of industries. It also provided me the opportunity to develop my networking skills, interview techniques and build my confidence in a more formal setting than university.

Interview Advice: The best advice I can give for an interview is to take your time before responding. It is easy to fall into the trap of speaking at a million miles an hour trying to get as may points across as possible. However, taking a short pause to think of your response and to control how quickly speak will pay dividends as it gives the impression that you are calm controlled and specific. Additionally, make sure you have prepared multiple examples for stock questions i.e. how did you deal with conflict and resolve this issue going forward etc. The more examples you the more confident you will feel.

In my experience at interview and supporting the recruitment events everyone wants you to succeed, no one is trying to trip you up (it felt like that in some of the other grad interviews I attended). I even had a coughing fit in the middle of my interview but because there are lots of different components to the assessment day (teamwork etc.) even if you mess one up you still have the chance to impress elsewhere and a solid chance to get recruited.

In terms of preparation, I would focus on the DHL strategies, 2020 and 2025, because you will be asked about these at some point in the application process. Here I would be thinking about how you view these and how you may have demonstrated these in the past.

I would also research the company and the customers we work with, this is a really interesting part of working for DHL and will also show your interest and passion for our business.

I know that it sounds obvious and is really boring to do but do your research. You don't have to know everything there is to know about the company but find something that excites you and dig a little deeper. If there's something that the company does that truly excites you and you can bring that up in your application. That passion will come through.

Also practice. The more practice tests, fake video interviews you do the more comfortable you will be doing them and the better your application will come across.

Interview Advice:

Take your time and explain your thinking/logic. The questions are broad and open-ended for a reason - the interviewers want to see how you think but they care less about being told all the things you've done. Definitely don't be afraid to show your achievements though.. use them to back up your point.

Ask questions! Ask questions about the programme, the roles you might get to do, the roles your interviewer's do, long term opportunities etc.. nothing shows that you want the role more. And react to the answers - if you're told something that sounds amazing, say so!

When applying, your passion needs to come through - an individual who strives to achieve personal and professional excellence is an important attitude to have. The process involves a series of online tests and video interviews and the key is to be genuine and honest.
When applying to the DHL future leader's programme you may not have a directly applicable degree but as long as you show willingness and capability to learn and have relevant soft skills and basic understanding of the company, you will be fine.

Describe a time you were faced with a challenge and how you dealt with it?
What do you consider your greatest achievement to be?

There were some questions I did not have direct experience with as I came from a design-related background, however, whatever you do - do not just reply "I don't know, I have never experienced this". You can explain that you have never dealt with an experience that the interviewer described but then go on to describe how you would go about the situation if it were to arise. This shows the interviewer your thought processes in stressful situations.

There is a long application and interview process. The interview process comprises of an all day assessment centre where you will have group tasks, a presentation to plan and present and an individual interview.
Be yourself, breathe before answering a question, be honest and give as many practical examples as possible.
DON'T fight other candidates to be seen as that will look badly on you; show that you are listening to others and offer your own suggestions and opinion on things respectfully. This graduate scheme is a good place to get exposure to the logistics industry but it is not an accelerated start scheme. Any applicants must be prepared to fight hard to get the experience they want and should not expect there to be the structure to support their ambitions.

Interview Advice:

On your assessment day you will be asked to complete a series of exercises from demonstrating your ability to think quickly, collaborate and present your findings. Speak up but be yourself. They are not looking for the loudest voice in the room.

For the interview itself the most important question to answer is why you want to join the logistics industry and DHL in particular. Do your homework on DHL.

When I applied I had no logistic experience, however I showed I was hard working, committed and forward thinking which stood me in good stead. As I was applying for a graduate management scheme showing that I had good leadership experience and was well organised was key.

Interview Advice:

DHL likes 'real', 'salt of the earth', 'hard working' people. There is no need to put on airs and graces or be pretentious. The company wants to see that you are willing, able and will get on with people.

Many of the top level guys worked themselves from the bottom up so although they appreciate the value of bright people they won't be interested in your academic studies. Talk about 'real life' or 'business' experience rather than how many A levels you have or the 'first' you are currently on track for.

If I could give one bit of advice it would be ask the interviewer (or anyone you meet in the business) how they got to where they did career wise... Everyone loves to talk about themselves and if your asking them it makes it appear you value what they have to say. Make sure you ask a follow up question to show you have been listening. E.G. you mentioned that you had experience starting up a new warehouse, can you tell me more about that? It sounded really interesting.

The interviewers are almost always people who work in regular roles within the businesses, not defined human resource members. Therefore although they will have interviewing experience, they are not expecting well oiled answers, more honest answers. Don't be afraid to ask the interviewer questions. As much as possible remain relaxed, and enjoy the experience. Almost cliche, but sound advice!

Best:

The company is strong on health and safety. Its response to Covid-19 was one of its finest hours. It generally pays its employees very well. There are opportunities for all members of staff to advance in the business. Many people in leadership positions started on the shop floor. There are chances to complete degrees in related subject matters and several routes for promotion.

Worst:

DHL collaborates with demanding customers who do not necessarily treat employees especially well. The atmosphere of some warehouses can be a bit macho and old-fashioned. An increase in female employees has ameliorated the situation somewhat. The company is enormous, and perhaps inevitably, some departments are more efficient and proactive than others. There is a variation in how much support you receive as a graduate.

Best: The opportunities with DHL are endless because they are so big and being a grad these are all available to you. They invest huge amounts of money and time to develop you and really want you to progress to the very senior roles quickly.

Worst: The company is so big that there are too many lines of communication. This means finding anything out takes ages and often the message is distorted. Any information you need often has to go through many people and is never a quick answer.

There is a great emphasis on learning and personal development and I have taken full advantage of this. I have never had any person in DHL refuse to make time for a meeting to just get to know more about marketing (with the head of marketing for DHL Supply Chain UKI) for example.

Worst:

Due to the nature of the business the experience varies a lot depending on the role you are in and the operation you are attached to - its not a bad thing in itself but you do need to be open to trying things that are outside your wheelhouse or you won't enjoy the graduate scheme.

Opportunity - DHL Supply Chain is a huge company with so many sites and opportunities to get involved outside of the day to day role. I have been lucky enough to be involved with various CSR activities which is something I am hugely passionate about, as well as being able to take part in numerous training events which take place across the company.

Worst:

For me, nothing so far. Some may say that shift work is one of the worst things about the company as generally it is unavoidable for at least some of the graduate program, however I personally enjoy shift work and find it easier to fit into my lifestyle than the usual 9-5.

While I have one line manager, I can count over 20 senior people in HR that I could turn too for advice, support, professional guidance and everything inbetween. The people in this company are amazing and all want to help you grow and succeed and it is a wonderful feeling.

The fact that DHL Supply Chain is such a large and diverse company means sometimes it Is hard to understand the organisation charts or where people sit, which sometimes makes it hard to know where to turn if you need support with something. The people in the business.

The wide range of differing activities that DHL does and the customers that it works with.

Worst:

The business is split into Business Units that can act as silos. As a graduate you do rotate through some of the sectors but I don't feel there is much cross communication apart from at a more senior level.

Opportunities to progress within so many different business areas, you don't feel stuck in once place

Working as a graduate you gain a lot of extra training modules which you wouldn't receive if you were just in a standard role

Worst:

Some sites have a lot of long serving employees, therefore going in as a young, enthusiastic graduate can on occasion get peoples guards up.

If you have to do shift work, hours can be disruptive

There isn't really a worst thing- The only thing would be there are elements of the company that are a bit old school.

Massive amount of opportunities to progress and a good 8% pension.

Worst:

Locations available and the slow pay rise over time (limited to 9% per performance review). A salary increase from 25k to 35k will take roughly a year if you meet all targets so some people find this frustrating as they are doing the job to the standard of someone on 35k yet don't get the full pay. It's to stop corruption so it has and good underlying principle though.

the company relies heavily on graduates so there is plenty of exposure with top level management from the very first day.

Worst:

The rotation that I am currently on means that all of my work is computer based and so I am not getting any operation exposure as of yet.
