Commercial Graduate, UK General Merchandise at TescoRead the full review »
Application Advice:
Tesco is always changing what they're looking for in candidates - don't take it personally if you don't get through all the stages. Prepare your examples of their values in advance - it's useful to be able to draw on these quickly when asked at interview. Also, keep on top of business happenings and retail in general, a commercial awareness is very important. It's all about networking and collaboration within and across teams and sharing knowledge, so bear this in mind!
Interview Advice:
The assessment centre is similar to most others - a group discussion, a 1-1 (or 1-several) interview, an analysis task. Just use your nous and you'll be fine.
For both the phone interview and the assessment centre, be ready with answers based on the values and skills that Tesco is looking for (these change all the time, but they should let you know in advance.)
Commercial Trainee, UK General Merchandise at TescoRead the full review »
Application Advice:
If you don't hear back at any stage as to whether or not you have been successful then chase them for a response! I did not hear for weeks after my telephone interview and presumed I had not been successful. It was only on a whim that I emailed and queried only to find out that I had been successful and it was an oversight that I hadn't been notified.
Interview Advice:
Relax into the assessment day. It is a long day and if you are not being yourself it will become apparent. For merchandiser positions I had to do a numeric test based on trade data, a presentation about risks and opportunities which I was able to prepare in advance of the day, and had several group tasks. My advice for the group tasks would be that it is not always about getting your idea to win or be chosen. You need to demonstrate that what you are doing is in the best interests of the customer and that you can listen to and build on the ideas of your peers.
