Application Advice:

Have some good work experience, it shows an interest in the given area. Not everyone has a relevant degree, but everyone has relevant work experience. I was lucky enough to spend a couple weeks with CBRE's development team in their head office in London. If you aren't lucky enough to know somebody who can get you work experience, use LinkedIn, see if anyone is able to give you a couple weeks at one of these companies.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself, there's every chance you're not going to be the smartest in the room, but show a willingness to want to learn from market leaders and be a sponge. Be actively involved in the group tasks, provide some background information on the tasks if you can, but try not to be condescending on others, as this industry will rely a lot on how you're able to work in a team and if you are putting others in a position where they look worse than you, then it shows an inability to work in a team environment. BE FRIENDLY! First impressions go a long way! It is a relaxed assessment centre as far as the major real estate assessments go, you might get asked the general what are you strengths/weaknesses, there are a couple of simple group tasks, but overall it is not a stressful environment.

Be yourself, and prepare effectively. I had to do a presentation as part of my interview about an area of London to invest into, which from what I realised it seemed to be less about the actual area you chose and more about you're reasoning as to why, so focus on the specifics as to why you have chosen the specific area and be knowledgeable about the area. they aren't out to trip you up

Make the interviewer know you fully understand what you are applying for, and if you don't, ask the questions until you do. They want to know who they are employing won't back out 6 months later because it was not what they were anticipating.

I did not have a construction related degree so I really had to draw on my extra-curricular activities and part time jobs to demonstrate my skill set and I do believe that, in the end, this set me apart from other applicants. Don't be afraid to acknowledge your weaknesses, but ensure you discuss how you plan to improve on these areas e.g. undertaking additional training, part time masters, etc. Also, ensure you have a couple of questions prepared that you can ask the interviewer, whether that is about company culture, a specific scheme you are interested in, a new construction method (modular building). etc.

Try to understand what the company is like and what qualities they are looking for, so you can prove these in the interview. You might be what they are looking for, but if you do not show it, they will not know.
Also, most of the interviews are to find how you would work on a daily basis and how you would react to problems. So try to not consider it an interview/test and just do what you would normally do.

Be sure that you are 100% comfortable with moving around every 6 months, and likely quite far from home.

The application process is lengthy, but with each next stage you get through, you learn a lot more about the company, and in my case, it was during the assessment centre that I realised I not only wanted to be on the graduate scheme, but I wanted to work for the company.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself. It's daunting and you may feel like you have to be more or less of yourself in order to make a good impression, but honestly be true to who you are. It makes you human and easier for the interviewers to connect with you.

Make sure you understand the industry, know what is going on commercially.

Application Advice:

Use your experiences to show why you are a good fit. It doesn't matter if you have had no experience in the housebuilding/construction industry beforehand. If you show how you can be an asset to the business it will stand you in good stead.

Be wary of the rotations, not just through departments but to new office locations. It is what you sign up for so be prepared to move every six months. If you don't think this is something you could handle then the scheme may not be for you.

Interview Advice:

Do your research. This is key. Make sure you understand the company and the industry basics, such as competitors, current difficulties and what the future looks like. It shows that you are interested and you have been diligent in your preparation.

The main thing is just to be yourself, anything else will be seen. If you get to this stage there is clearly something they liked about you so don't change just do your research and impress them. Don't be scared, the people who interview you are human as well. They will ask you to draw on the experiences from work, university or travelling. They want to know about you!

The company look at the person more than the experience/qualifications so with the video interview, telephone interview and assessment centre, aim to be confident, challenge ideas you don't agree with and ask as many questions as you can. It's hard to know the role and company fully when going through the application process and you want to know you'll enjoy the job so ask all the things you want to know.

Interview Advice:

I was asked questions about why I wanted to work in this industry and why Taylor Wimpey specifically. A lot of the questions were competency based because they were really interested in getting to know you, so asked questions about myself and my background too. I think my advice for the interviews is that the interviewers genuinely want you to feel relaxed and really appreciate charismatic people.

The basics: team work, team leadership, problem-solving, past work experience, past education, extra-curricular - standard job application preparation.

Practise video interviews, telephone interviews, online tests etc. so that you are ready for when this application comes around.

Make use of university careers services e.g. interview practise sessions / assessment centre sessions / CV building sessions to ensure that you are fully prepared (I could not stress this enough).

Interview Advice:

Be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in the industry, as well as personal motivations for applying for the job role.

Research the current climate of the industry - customer service to name just one has become increasingly important.

A cliché one: be yourself! Taylor Wimpey are looking for genuine people so be open about your background and I would encourage discussing anything that you do that is extra-curricular (provided that it is relevant).

Application Advice:

Don't worry if your degree isn't explicitly relevant to housebuilding, but do make sure to show your passion for personal progression, innovation and how your alternative background can add to the companies diversity.

You can be taught processes, but you can't be taught drive and proactivity - these are essential qualities to demonstrate, as the graduate scheme is loosely structured in order for you to show your tenacity.

Interview Advice:

Think about the biggest challenges facing the industry in the next 5+ years and what you can do to help combat and mitigate for those. The skills shortage is a major issue which the entire construction industry faces and will no doubt arise.

Do your research! Make sure you know the basics of the business, know the faces, know your local sites, and try and gain an understanding of the key functions.

Always play towards your strengths when faced with a scenario that phases you in a group/individual assessment. Try to think out of the box and look at things from an unconventional angle.

The phone interview is a tricky dynamic, be pleasant and honest, if you're not, they will be able to see through you immediately.

There will always be a group activity and an individual activity. Always make yourself stand out in the group activity for the right reasons, always be the first to speak, even if its asking everyone else what they think, it shows confidence and decisiveness. Be the person to bring in the other people that aren't contributing much.

Application Advice:

- Applications are easier said than done, my biggest advice is to be yourself as TW can teach you the skills, not the personality. If you come into the process and you are fake or someone you're not, you have to be fake for the rest of your time in the job. If you come in and are yourself then you know if you got the job, it's right for you and if you didn't get the job you know TW wasn't the place for you to shine.

- Extra-curriculum activities do you wonders!

- Think really hard about why you want to work for TW, your reason/story/motive can sink or swim your application.

Interview Advice:

- Similar to my advice on the application - be yourself and showcase your personality rather than your qualifications.

- It's okay to make mistakes!!! You don't have to be perfect, especially in interviews and assessment centres! In the interview process etc. It's more about how you deal with the issues rather than actually solving them.

- In my final interview, I was asked to give a presentation on building on green belt land - my advice would be to rehearse, rehearse, rehearse...know what you want to say and how.

- Convince yourself you have 5 other job offers so when you come to the interview with TW you are confident as you can fall back on your 'fake job offers' - this helped me as it made me less nervous about this interview being the be all/end all.

Make sure to research all areas of the business and the attributes that they look for in a graduate. I'd advise you follow the STAR method of answering an interview question and this most effectively demonstrates the attribute that TW are looking for.

Interview Advice:

Use the STAR method of answering questions and use real life examples. Know the business inside and out. Taylor Wimpey are very interested in people and demonstrating a passion for the business and an eagerness to learn is also helpful.

Any experience can be relevant, from writing, to office work, to sampling or working at events so be sure to make it clear that you can multitask and learn from others.

Interview Advice:

Ensure you are friendly and willing to get your hands dirty - the first job in PR is hard and you can end up doing all manner of random (but fun!) jobs so it's good to portray that in your interview, as well as a hunger to learn from others and develop your skills.

Application Advice:

Ensure that you express yourself as a well rounded individual throughout each phase of the application process. This can be done by providing a variety of examples when highlighting your qualities and attributes. Remember that Taylor Wimpey appreciates that you are not going to have all the knowledge and skills of a house building expert from day one, however they are interested in candidates that have the "right frame of mind" to learn and develop, so focus on demonstrating this.
Please also research the company and its market (including competitors!) before a telephone/face to face interview as this can impress the interviewers. For the Assessment Day remember to be a team player and be ready to showcase your team playing capabilities.

Interview Advice:

Fundamentally be yourself in a professional and approachable capacity. If you can, some practise with friends or family can boost your confidence. You may be tasked with preparing material beforehand such as a presentation so should ensure that it is tailored to your style of working. Remember if you're given a task to do a presentation with the choice of 2 titles, the interviewers on the day are going to have seen numerous other candidates with the same facts and style of a standard power point. Therefore make yours interesting and interactive by trying to include references to facts unheard of and how those could potentially be relevant. This should help you stand out!

A distinct feature of this programme is the requirement to move office every six months. Although TW helps you with each move, it would be unwise to apply if you aren't comfortable with this. Don't worry if your degree is unrelated to construction/house building as long as you possess a sensible outlook and a willingness to learn. TW is looking for the right type of person regardless of technical know-how.

Interview Advice:

Taylor Wimpey has a great set of core values and tries to recognise the best in everyone. At an interview be prepared, be honest and be confident of yourself but be aware that you don't necessarily need to be the loudest person in the room to get noticed. With house building constantly featuring in the press (both good and bad), it would be a good idea to make sure you have an up to date knowledge of current industry news which you could link to TW. An idea of the business model could also be helpful.

Application Advice:

It is important to get an understanding on the housing industry and also do some research on the company. looking through the annual report and website can be a good starting point to expand your knowledge about the company.

Be yourself and it is important to be honest. Many people in the graduate scheme have studied different disciplines and therefore it is important to understand, although it is a construction company,TW don't expect graduates to be construction geniuses. The graduate scheme helps assist you on areas of development and consolidating your strengths; be enthusiastic, ambitious and explain what you can bring to the company.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself and express your personality. You'll be working with a range of people at TW so good communition skills and the ability to get along with different workers is important.

Prepare your competency questions. Think of situations you have demonstrated the competencies TW look for and be concise when you address this; situation, task, action and result.

Most importantly do your research about the company and the construction industry.

Application Advice:

I would advise that you demonstrate a good degree of technical knowledge, be it in chemical engineering or in your field of work (for me it was Supply Chain), and show a deep interest in working in a manufacturing background. I would also suggest gaining prior work experience in the manufacturing sector, and it would be highly beneficial if you could show some sort of continuous improvement project work (be it in your degree or in a previous place of work).

Interview Advice:

Be prepared for some questions which might seem inapplicable to your position as a recent graduate - I was asked if how a project I had completed at university had contributed to a company's bottom line (!) Also be prepared for quite a rigorous interview process which may seem daunting - I had 4 managers in the room asking me questions for what seemed like hours!

Interview Advice:

The assessment centre is challenging, however, it is important to stay confident and talkative. It is important that the candidate is viewed as a leader and it is essential that this comes across during the assessment centre, by demonstrating superior communicative skills and confidence. The interview process will push candidates and it is important for them to stay calm and think on their feet, as well as show that they are capable of persuading and influencing other people.

Application Advice:

You should do a lot of research on the company before you go to your first interview. By doing this it shows that you are interested in the company, prepared, hardworking and organised. It will also help you make the decision as to whether or not the company and the role is right for you.

You need to have an ability to quickly build rapport with others. Even with people who perhaps you wouldn’t normally associate yourself with outside of work. To do this show an interest in others roles, be respectful at all times, be yourself and stay grounded. Be kind, kindness will take you a long way. If you are able to be all of this, then people are more willing to help you, which ultimately will benefit your career and experiences at Taylor Wimpey.

I believe the next two bits of advice are the most important:

1 - Make the industry a lifestyle decision; make housebuilding a genuine hobby of yours. It shouldn't be simply a 9 - 5. The more effort you put in the more you get back from Taylor Wimpey, and the better you become. Read estate gazette, explore right move and zoopla, go to planning committees, network with external consultants and with your colleagues.

2 - Do not be competitive with fellow graduates. No two people are the same. A lot of people who join the scheme will have come from very different backgrounds and will therefore already be at different stages in the industry. You should only worry about how you are doing on the scheme and only be competitive with yourself. Remember some people react negatively to that competitive spirit, which might prevent them from demonstrating their ability.
Everyone who joins the scheme is aiming to become managers and directors one day, but it will take everyone different lengths of time. The best thing to do is to be in a role which is suitable for your existing ability, and therefore do not worry yourself about the speed of progression in comparison to your colleagues.

Interview Advice:

Prepare; Read Taylor Wimpey website, visit a Taylor Wimpey development and read Estate Gazette.
Try predicting what questions you might be asked and prepare answers to these. The likelihood is that some of your predictions will be questions they will ask.

Demonstrate your ability during interview. If you think you have something worth mentioning then say it. If you don’t know the answer to one of the questions don’t be afraid to say so.

Be confident.
Be yourself.
Enjoy it! The more relaxed you are hopefully the more relaxed the interviewer will be.

Application Advice:

With the application and CV/covering letter I would say the most important thing is to make sure it is checked and checked again, mistakes on these really demonstrate carelessness and a lack of attention to detail.

Interview Advice:

The interviews were both very different, the first one was more focused on competency based questions while the second was a lot less structured and included a 5 min presentation.

With the competency based questions a lot of different skills and attributes were mentioned and examples of when you demonstrated that skill were needed. I would advise preparing a large list of examples which can be used to demonstrate a few different skills, that way as you get a question you can pick the most appropriate situation. Also when thinking of options don’t stick to work or university related examples, things at home or within your social life can just as easily demonstrate good time management and will also reflect more about yourself as a person.
Questions such as ‘what is the biggest risk you have taken?’ and ‘what are your best and worst qualities?’ were also thrown into the interview.

Other advice would be to definitely do your research and show that you have taken the time to understand the market and how the company operates. Things like mission statements and core values of the company are really useful to know.

For the process technologies (PT) PEDP (Process Engineering Development Programme) as part of the syngas and refineries branch, the advice is to read up on what JM as a wider company does as well as what PT actually does. You would be joining a business which has its main revenue stream coming from selling catalyst into hydrogen generation flowsheets by reforming of natural gas, as well as providing methanol and ammonia synthesis catalysts. Be honest, use the CAR (Contect, your specific Action, Results) technique in online questions.

Interview Advice:

The interviews (several over a two day assessment centre) focus on technical and competency strengths. The competency bit is about interpersonal skill, leadership, communication, drive, integrity, conviction and wit. The technical side looks at how you present a technical project you have experience with, as well as technical interview which is focussed on a broad range of process engineering concepts. The technical interview looks to see how you think as well as what you know.

Although Amey is typically known for being an 'engineering' or 'construction' company, this does not mean you need an engineering degree to work here. The Graduate Management Scheme accepts people from all degree disciplines and values behaviours and experience over degree subject.

Interview Advice:

Research! There is plenty of information on the Amey website to give you an overview of the type of business we are, the opportunities available and what the graduate scheme is about. Researching the business and its competitors shows your interest and enthusiasm for the role. It is quite clear when a candidate is applying for 'any graduate scheme available', they often lack passion and knowledge about the role.
Most importantly, be yourself and show your personality rather than trying to be someone else.

Research the following -

Company, Objectives, the Role, Amey Divisions,

Think of all your past work experience, extra curricular activities and positions of responsibilities and achievements - Now think how these points have developed you and how they satisfy the Job Requirements for the role

Interview Advice:

Research the company, divisions, objectives, values etc etc

Think where you would like to be in 5 - 10 years time (It's okay not knowing... you can say the rotational programme should help with this vision)

Interviews are relaxed and the interviewer does not want to catch you out - Try to be yourself as best as you can and answer questions honestly. Try to enjoy the experience.

Practice your Presentation in advance

Make an effort to meet others and get to know them - As well as assessors

Listen what everyone has to say in the group study - Don't force your ideas onto everyone - Give everyone a chance - Be ready for tough questions from assessors after the group exercise

Application Advice:

There are requirements for the graduate scheme, including a 2:1 degree, which is the most important requirement.

You must be prepared to travel around for a two year period for the graduate scheme. It is more than likely that you will have to work away from your home location for the duration of the scheme and change is inevitable.

Interview Advice:

Key values for Amey include being Progressive, Accountable, Collaborative and Effective, so show these traits and talk about them. The more you can learn and understand about Amey before interview, the better.

You must be self-confident but not over-powering. Individuals at the assessments who are over-dominating, often come across as aggressive and this doesn't reflect well. Amey are keen to employ people who are understanding and diplomatic, so be friendly as well as knowledgeable.

Application Advice:

If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to be yourself.

Secondly, make sure you apply because it is in my opinion the best graduate scheme in this industry and you won’t realise how good it is until you start it.

On top of this, it is important to be comfortable with the fact you are nationally flexible. You could be working in Exeter on a Friday and start your next rotation in Scotland on the Monday. The job requires a lot of travel so ensuring you have a reliable car is also essential.

During the application process, it is beneficial to demonstrate your personality. Make sure this can be seen in your application.

Interview Advice:

It's easy to say but try and stay relaxed. I found the interview really good, the questions were hard but they got the best out of me. Where I struggled to answer, the question was asked in a different way to ensure they got a full understanding of me.

It is also important to be yourself and show your personality. Check the share price before you go into your interview. I was asked this question in mine.

Another good question was - what was the last mistake you made? I had never been asked this question in previous interviews and was not expecting it.

Personality is key. Your education will get you to interview stages however from there you have to be a self motivated person who is willing to be thrown in at the deep end and try to swim. The interviews with management can actually be quite fun if you relax and just be yourself, they are looking to find out more about you as a person. Read a bit of information from the website to make sure that you understand what the company actually does! As with all jobs, if you show your passion for the subject it will stand you in a good position. I left a small consultancy to come to Amey and by reading up about the company and the contracts first, I was able to tailor my interview preparation appropriately which helped me have a successful interview. Show that you will be a committed individual and make them want you in their team.

Interview Advice:

One main interview advice would be that highlight areas where mistakes were made. Everyone can talk 100% about what went well. I wouldn't say that you should go in and say that everything went wrong and we lost contracts etc, but show how you dealt with the situation and what you have learnt and how it was resolved. This shows more character to the interviewer than someone who always focuses on the positives. I can tell you now that I have made errors on projects as im sure others have, its about how you reacted and what you did to resolve this or make the best of the situation. Bring examples of projects also if they are relevant to the job role. Don't be afraid to interview the interviewer about the company and the office as they will see that you are interested to know more.

Speak clearly and confidently, avoid ambiguous statements and be honest about what you can and can't do, just because you don't have a certain skill doesn't mean you're wrong for the role.

The process is an online application and logical/numerical reasoning tests (online), followed by an assessment centre at the Billingham site. Application Advice:

Try and get some engineering work experience before leaving university because it makes your CV look better and gives you more to talk about at interview. It helps you to stand out because you aren't another person talking about their design project.

Generally try to make your CV stand out because the recruitment people see a lot of applicants so you need to make sure the way you sell yourself draws attention.

Interview Advice:

Management interview - About how you do or would react in certain situations. No real right answer but think about all options in a given situation.

Technical interview - Know your chemical engineering principles. Heat exchange etc. People can get the job even if they don't get the right answer because the interviewers are looking at how you think. So make sure you explain your thinking and explore all the options. If the interviewer says something pay attention because they might be herding you towards something you have missed or they want you to expand on.

There is also a BEI interwiew which is about a situation you have been in and you have to talk through the situation from start to finish.

Graduates have a team building exercise which can be fun but just make sure you aren't rude to anyone but also that you get involved and get ideas across.

Be very flexible in your approach to taking this role, i.e being able to travel as Amey do have a range of various contracts in utilities and highways which need resources to fill any gaps at times through its resource management tool streamline. Interview Advice:

Be very flexible in your approach to taking this role, i.e being able to travel as Amey do have a rage of various contracts in utilities and highways. A master degree is probably at the top of the agenda as so many graduates from university now attain masters, there's lots of competition for these roles. Experience is again vitally important, especially within the highways sector. Amey are very good at advertising and enthusiastic about summer placements, and through good impressions they are more than likely to take on someone that has already worked within the amey environment. Also look into the contracts that Amey have and the work that they are involved in, you'd be suprised. Come with an open mind, nearly everyone (myself included) underestimate how big and complex the railway engineering industry is. It is one of the few booming industries in the country at the moment.

Interview Advice:

Do some research before the interview. If you are applying for a graduate or entry level job your interviewer will not expect you to have detailed knowledge, but a quick read of railway signalling on wikipedia (as an example from my section of the railway) or looking into what projects you might be involved in will always look good in the interviewers eyes.

Always have a set of questions you want to ask, write them down on pad and have the pad out during the interview. if and when the interviewer answers a question you have before you get to answer it make a point of crossing it out that way if you get to the end of an interview and most of your questions have already been addressed (as has happend to me before) you can still demonstrate you put some thought into what you want to get out of the interview.

Read up on the company. As I said before, so few people have heard of Amey. There are so many opportunities and roles within the company, including working abroad. Be open about what you want out of the role. If you don't ask you don't get, and if you're wanting to attain further professional qualifications you need to ensure that you will be put into several roles to achieve a wide range of experience. Having experience in the industry obviously helps but I went into the role without any placement so don't feel that lack of experience will be a detriment to your application.

Interview Advice:

The interview I went to was a whole day and consisted of 3 parts: a one-to-one interview; a group exercise; and a written exercise. The one-to-one interview was about 15-30mins and it's more to get to know you, and what has inspired you to get to where you are now. At the end of the interview I was also asked to draw bending moments so read up on those! For the group exercise we were put into groups of 3 and given a project brief and had to come up with a solution. We then had to give a presentation to the group of interviewers. The written exercise was based on 1 question, for which I could not offer much advice as the question was not based on Amey in particular, and would change at each interview. I can only recommend reading up on current and future engineering projects. Most importantly, just be yourself!
