Application Advice:

The process was very fast for me. It's an initial application online, a set of online tests - one was maths based, one was prioritising emails, then a video interview which was really bizarre, as there is no-one on the other end - the questions flash up, you get about 10seconds to read, undertand and think of an answer, then a certain amount of time to answer them via webcam. Then it is the assessment day.
As far as advice goes for applying - make sure you want it. It is long days, a lot to learn. and there is a large training folder to work through and complete to timescales - you need to take control of your own learning, as you are literally left to it. You must also be prepared to travel - the likelihood of you being placed in your local store 10 minutes down the road is slim.

Interview Advice:

This was a group assessment day consisting of an ice breaker, group decision making activity, presentation/action plan on a given topic, prioritising activity and an individual interview. The whole thing lasted roughly 9am-3pm. Key things to remember: speak up, but don't speak over people. They are looking for leadership skills, confidence, and personality, along with the ability to reason and influence. In your interview, you'll be asked standard "why do you want the job", "are you willing to work long flexible hours" type questions, along with giving examples of how you have demonstrated leadership, problem solving and challenging events. The day itself is actually not as stressful as it sounds, it is a great chance to meet other grads - you do feel like you are competing for a job against them, but probably over half of the people that attended my assessment day got on to the scheme.

Application Advice:

Research the company values and make sure they align with your own. The folks at Morrisons know these inside and out. Be able to give good examples of what these mean for you.

Interview Advice:

Be able to demonstrate leadership, that you can act proactively. This isn't a grad scheme where someone will be holding your hand all the way through, so you need to be able to take charge. Find the balance here though, taking charge can easily turn into being arrogant, and northern folks are quite humble!

Sometimes it can take a while to get feedback, however for the most part it went smoothly. The video interview is the strangest thing I've ever done. Don't look at yourself look at the camera.

Application Advice:

Complete the tests as quickly as possible, do not leave them until the last moment as you will not be in the best position to achieve the highest results. Do not over think the questions and write up answers to provisional questions you believe they may ask you as this will naturally put you into the habit of being questioned and thinking around the subjects associated with the job.

Interview Advice:

I would advise that the candidate should asses the skills set that they have and think of specific examples of times when these skills have been highlighted in work related environments. Ensure that you do plenty of research on the company so that you are certain that the company is the right fit for you and then when it comes to any interviews, you know that you are answering truthfully.

Be yourself and let your personality and strengths shine through. It's not about what you studied or what jobs you've had before but whether the behaviours and qualities you demontrate are compatible with Morrisons and the scheme you're applying for.

Interview Advice:

Again, it's about letting your strengths and behaviours do the talking. If you're passionate then show passion, if you're someone who loves to drive change then let that shine through. Engage with the others on the assessment centre and show your interpersonal skills, Morrisons aren't just looking for somebody to sit behind a computer all day, you need to be able to interact with a wide variety of people on a day to day basis.

The paperwork will look really good but you must be aware that when they mean hands on it is hands on. Dont be suprised if you find yourself working 10-15 hours extra a week, dont be suprised if your put in the freezer for the whole day, and dont take it to heart when you are spoken down to by other senior members of staff. Application Advice:

Don't give false information in your application, it can lead to incredibly awkward conversations further down the application process if picked up on.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself at the Assessment Centre/Interview; having seen these in action now I'm in a role, it is all too obvious when people are putting on a false persona to seem more "business minded" or "professional". At an interview you will be pitching to people who are likely to be working alongside you, therefore they will be looking for a candidate they can get along with as much as ones that are professional in their mannerisms.

Application Advice:

Be ready for hard work. If you don't want to get your hands dirty, break a nail or work long hours this isn't the right role for you!
However if you are willing to prove your worth, it's an incredibly rewarding and challenging place to work that will not only build you as a person but will give you professional confidence

Interview Advice:

What would you do in this situation xyz - Remember the customer is always right, (Even if they're not). You don't always have to give them free things and let them walk all over you, but being compassionate and taking the time to listen is always a good place to start.
You'll be working with people everyday, all day. So make sure you can adapt to different people and their working styles. If you have to give a presentation or do group work make sure you ask what your group thinks. Put forward your ideas, but take a step back to recieve the feedback.

Application Advice:

Understand what values Wm Morrisons has and what their approach is to their business. This is a core aspect to how we work on a daily basis, as we are more than just a supermarket selling fruit and vegetables.

As well as understanding Wm Morrisons from an internal point of view, it is important to gain an understanding of everything from an external point of view. So for example, understanding what new technology, news stories, etc, might affect the way Wm Morrisons operate. Or knowing what are competitors currently doing and what their future plans are in order to gain better knowledge of the industry as a whole.

Interview Advice:

A lot of the interview questions were based around the values of Wm Morrisons, therefore I cannot stress enough how important it is to read, understand and know these values. It is then a good idea to think about how you can link these values into your generic interview questions about showing examples on communication, leadership, teamwork, etc.

There will be specific questions that relate to the graduate scheme you are applying for. So for example, as I am on the IT and Business Change graduate scheme, a question that I was asked was "What current technology interests you most in business and why?".

Application Advice:

Only apply if you really want to work in the retail sector - we live and breathe food and customer values, and if you can't see yourself enjoying this then don't bother.
Are you sure the Group Wide scheme is for you? So many people apply and you could be more suited to one of the many other schemes we have on offer. This scheme is known to be the toughest to get on to because of the really good competition.
Relax and research - it isn't rocket science to find out Morrisons recent performance, so make sure you know it.
The tests aren't that hard - just relax and you will be fine. You don't even need a super high score to pass.
The video interview will ask you a 30 second snippet of yourself, why you want to go on the scheme, why you want to work at morrisons e.t.c. so don't give a generic answer that people won't remember - you need to stand out. Again, learn about Morrisons beforehand.

Interview Advice:

Really learn the values. We live and breathe them and if you don't fit them then don't even bother applying.
Really learn our strategy for the year. My one secret - "The Plan on a Page". Don't forget this. It will look impressive if you focus on our strategy as it will show you have done your research and will be able to fit in to our organisations plans well.
Have confidence in yourself and in your convictions - you will be overlooked if you don't.
Don't be domineering or arrogant - it puts people off hiring you.
Remember to prepare some general answers: "why do you want to work at Morrisons", "why do you want to do this scheme"?... You should always be expected to be asked this in an interview so make sure that your answer wows.
Don't lie - they will see straight through you.

Be prepared to be pushed in your final interview, they want to make sure the job is right for you. Don't be afraid to use examples from a variety of experiences, no one has perfect work experience that's expected to be relevant.

Make sure you reflect yourself as a well rounded individual. On the group-wide scheme in particular, there are graduates from a wide variety of backgrounds and degree programmes including languages, politics, speech therapy and engineering. Don't think that you won't get a place because you haven't done a business or finance degree. Morrisons prides itself on having a diverse group of graduates who they believe will be future leaders.

Interview Advice:

Don't get too nervous! I was extremely nervous prior to the assessment centre, but was put at ease the moment I arrived and was much more relaxed than I had expected. Be prepared to take part in various activities.

Make sure you thoroughly research the business in terms of history, financials and any recent news. You probably won't need to know all the management board members' names but being aware of a few key individuals eg CEO and CFO would be useful.

In the interview, be open and honest about what you think you can bring to the role and what you want to learn and get out of it. Ask the interviewer how long they've worked at Morrisons and what attracted them. It is always interesting to hear their point of view.

As with all roles, tailor your application. In this instance to a retailer - focus on things such as simplicity, communication, commercial awareness, managing change, speed, and think about how things could be done differently and why this is good.
