Do not begin as a trainee, I had the option of completing my degree, or joining Wood Group PSN, I chose the money. Yes the money is good at the moment, and the people I am working with in my immediate team are nice, however I feel as though I have arrived at the company with an HND, while other graduates beginning the same time with masters degrees, that the trainees get left to fend for themselves and the graduates are groomed into management roles.

Application Advice:

Research the particular areas Wood Group operate in. Be aware that there are several different companies underneath Wood Group for example I work for Wood Group PSN which in some respects is a lot different to working for Wood Group Kenny.

Interview Advice:

Safety is a massive aspect of what Wood Group PSN is trying to ingrain in their employees and this ethos along with other aspects are captured in our core values which are detailed on their website. It would reflect well if you were aware of them going into the interview.
Perhaps if you are still in university or college it would be worthwhile getting to grasps with what the role will entail and the machinery you may be working on should you get the job.

Application Advice:

Take your time and do a good job of the questions.

Interview Advice:

The best advice I can give is to just be relaxed and confident, no one is out to put you under stress or trip you up, they're as interested in who you are as much as what you've done. I found the assessment centre relaxed and an enjoyable day.

Application Advice:

Don't try and be someone you're not. The company seems to look for like minded individuals i.e. people who will work well in teams and can have some fun both inside and outside of the office. Obviously they want smart individuals but I found after the early stages of recruitment (CV's and online tests) they were able to tell pretty quickly which candidates would but technically suitable for the job. The rest of the recruitment process (interview and assessment center's) was really just an opportunity for them to get to know me.

Interview Advice:

Don't fear the interviews or assessment centre, the more relaxed you are the better you will come off. Compared to interviews and assessment center's I had at other Oil & Gas companies, Wood Group's was really the most enjoyable.

Try to be sensible in explanations, using reasoning but don't try to 'be clever'. Be relaxed, as this is also a personality WG are looking for.

Application Advice:

Look into the company culture and be yourself. Most people who are interviewed have the technical ability, so the distinguishing factor may be a personality fit.

Interview Advice:

You will be asked a lot of competency based questions as well a some technical questions. Other assessment centres I attended were more complex. The assessment centre is one of the most pleasant to attend, so try to enjoy it.

Application Advice:

It is not a surprise to people that salaries for a service company are a bit lower than the ones offered by an operator. However, the selection of the job that you want to apply should depend in what career path you want to have.
Joining an operator will allow you to earn more money but you will not become as technical in certain topics, you will be more involved with project management than engineering.
In a service company you will earn a little bit less however, you will have a lot more exposure to real engineering. This will give you a better understanding on how work is delivered and will help you develop a good engineering knowledge.
When you apply for a job have in mind the path that you would like to do and make sure that you show your personality and attitude when you complete your application form.

Interview Advice:

Very simple, be as professional as you can be but don't be someone you are not. Unless you are an actor, interviewers will notice when you are someone that you are not.

Keep everything on your application relevant to the position you are applying for. Focus on your qualifications and current skills that you feel would be beneficial as a designer.
Make sure that all software tools that you have experience in are listed and your knowledge on each tool. If you can, try gain experience with AutoCAD, wither this is just an appreciation course or shadowing someone proficient in it.

Interview Advice:

Invest your time learning about the role of a designer. Understand what it is you do and have an understanding of the industry. A starting point would be to learn what a P&ID is, and what information you can gather from these in relation to the position you apply for.

Application Advice:

Core values! For every question you answer, try and relate your past experiences to the company's core values. This may seem tedious, but the company places huge emphasis in it's core values and takes pride in it's reputation for staying true to them.

Make sure you tap into all your past experiences, try and talk about a range of activities you've been involved with, e.g. clubs at university, duke of edinburgh awards, social clubs, travels, charity work etc.

If you know someone that works for the company, make sure you name them!

Interview Advice:

Make sure you learn the company's core values.

The interview (when I interviewed a year ago) was set up in 4 parts.

Exam - Numerical and reading tests. The reading test is straightforward, write a summary report from information provided (essentially copying key points of information from a case study). The numerical test will take you back to school arithmetic, multiplication, division etc. Again should be fairly straightforward, just try and jog your memory before the day!

Interviews - Questions tend to involve "Can you tell us about a time when you had to lead a team?", "Tell us about a time when you had to deal with a difficult person within a team." Etc. Just prepare for these questions, be honest. You will have had these experiences, you just have to realise when/where you had them. And relate them to the core values!

At the end, make sure you have questions relating to the company. Read up on news about the company, ask about current strategies/goals etc. Don't be afraid to ask what the salary is (the application form probably says Competitive Salary). This is your chance to interview the interviewers.

Team assesment - You will be in a team of 4 or 5, where you have a challenge to complete. You will be given information in front of you and you have to work as a team to arrive at the solution. 4 or 5 assessors observe your interaction with the team, so don't sit in silence.

Presentation - 5 or 10 minute presentation. In my assessment centre, we were given topics a week beforehand. Either "Your greatest achievement to date" or "Your 'Eureka' moment". On my assesment day, alot of people presented about running a 10k or something like that, but try to make your choice unique. Make it something that they haven't heard all day. Again, relate your presentation and the experiences you are speaking about to the core values. (Don't explicitly say "this relates to the core values because...", but tell them what you learned during the experience. E.g the importance of integrity or health and safety etc.)

Working on your CV and having proffesionals helping you will always be helpful.
If you find your CV stretches over one double sided piece of paper then try write out eveything in a list starting with what you consider the most important, so that you can begin to drop things off lower on the list.
When applying for this role you will be asked to write a cover letter. give yourself plenty of time to write this, it should be no longer than one page. The cover letter should explain why you want to join the company.

Interview Advice:

The interview was split into four sections: Group Task, Assessment, Interview and a presentation.

The Group Task is aimed at seeing how you work in a group, it is not always neccessary to take control, what people want to see is that you can work with people, follow instructions and have your own innovation when it comes to the task.

The Assessment is a knowledge based taks that focuses on problem solving and a sharp eye for mistakes.

The Interview takes place in a small room with yourself and two people from the company. You will be asked a lot of questions about your involvement in any previous roles and how you have reacted in certain situations.

You should be asked to write and preform a presentation in front of a few people from the company. try keep the subject either personal to yourself or something relevant in engineering. the presentation should last 6 minutes. try to memorise your speach and if you have powerpoint set up try keep each slid as simple as possible and use it slightly as a cue card, helping you to remember your place and back up your presentation.

Each interview is subject to change, so be prepared to get something different. try to research the company a bit more and especially the role you are applying for, look up information on AutoCAD and P&IDs (piping and instrument drawings) as they may be helpful.

I came into Woodgroup PSN through the academy as a 33 year old mature trainee looking to re-train, I have not looked back since. Be specific in your application, don't leave things out that you may feel is not applicable. WG are looking for a very particular person. Concentrate on your strengths what ever they may be.

Interview Advice:

On the day of Interview I ensured that I had a good rest the previous night (in the hotel provided), after a Q&A session from HR, Engineers and past Trainee's we were split into groups. We were given a set of hands on tasks to complete as a small team of about eight. THis was followed by a maths test and competency assessment (know your trig). Finally we were interviewed by HR and a Project leader.

My advice is relax, be yourself, if you think you have not done so well on one test then don't dwell on it, just apply yourself to the next. First and foremost do your research, WG has very strong ethics which are designed around strong Core Values, "Know These!"

Know that you are applying to a company that is genuinly passionate about the core values. You need to know these inside out for the assessment day as you will have do demonstrate this at some point. We had to do a short presentation on them which was prepared on the day.

What I have learnt from speaking to different managers is that they want to see a great attitude such as can-do attitude and this is probably more important than your degree as we have people from all kinds of backgrounds in Project Controls. You need to be a great team player which also means questioning ideas sometimes and not just accepting them because the whole group agrees.

Interview Advice:

Sounds cliche but be yourself and try to relax. In my interview they were really friendly and they do not grill you as you might think. Know the function your discipline provides within the company and the benefit to the company and customer.
