The interview focused primarily on whether I would be a good fit for the firm. There were very few questions in relation to commercial awareness.
I understand the application process now involves an assessment day, so the experience may be somewhat different.

Application Advice:
There is a "Penningtons type" of person and aspiring trainee solicitors should really try to get on to one of the formal vacation schemes as this is a really good way for candidates to get their foot in the door and remembered. It will also help the candidate (and the firm) know whether the person is a good fit. Confident (not arrogant) applicants, who are friendly and down to earth, and who can show a commitment to working for Penningtons specifically (it is not your generic law firm) and a hard working nature, are highly valued.
Interview Advice:
Interviews for trainee level are competency based. Interviews for qualified positions are a mix of competency based questions and questions based on technical knowledge.

Application Advice:
Research your firm well; know what work is done, specifically in the office to which you are applying. If the firm emphasises cross office working, as the new Penningtons Manches does, then emphasis how work can come in from any office i.e. London but be done across the firm. Find a cultural/personality fit for the firm you apply for - it can be more important than the work you do.
Interview Advice:
Research the firm: where possible find out the firms ambitions. Talk with real enthusiasm.
