Application Advice:

Be yourself; find your voice; be open-minded with regard to the 4 streams within the scheme.

Interview Advice:

Have a couple of benchmark best and worst practice brands (and how you would improve them); know why you want to be in this industry; know what you would like to achieve from the scheme.

Application Advice:

Be yourself. Don't try to be the advertising/branding/marketing people you see on tv. Be open, try to let the interviewers see who you really are because that is what makes you special. Try to think out of the box for your brand essay - don't write about a topic that you think we want to hear about, write about something that inspires you because your passion will come across when you present your essay in the final assessment.

Interview Advice:

Come prepared to talk about why you have chosen to apply for this role. Also think about what it is that sets you apart from your fellow applicants.

Application Advice:

People who have previously graduated from the scheme are all very different; the team isn't looking for clones. It's horrifically cliche, but you have to stand out by being yourself and let your personality show.

Demonstrate that you have breadth as well as depth of experience. Work experience isn't the be all and end all--show that you're well rounded.

Interview Advice:

It can be daunting to be in a recruitment environment with not just that many senior marketing people, but also amazing candidates. Don't compare yourself to others! The people assessing know how to work out who will be the best fit, not you--and it will only make you nervous. Be yourself and have confidence for getting to interview.

Application Advice:

Be yourself, be energetic and think out of the box with your application essay.

Interview Advice:

You will need to talk about your background and be ready to passionately back up why you want this role. The essay gets you in but you need to bring your A game in terms of personality and networking to make it to the final round.

Application Advice:

Be open and throw yourself at every experience, in each of the agencies. Drop preconceptions or expectations about what you will or will not find interest in. Ask questions, don't be shy.

Interview Advice:

Prepare answers based around hooks in your CV/cover letter.

Let your character show through, you are not interviewing to be an accountant.

Don't ask questions that make you look ill prepared or any lack of dedication to the application.

Application Advice:

Choose a brand for your brand essay that is slightly unusual and that you are actually passionate about.
Make sure you answer the question and give actual examples of campaigns, initiatives that would improve the brand's reputation, influence, segments etc.

Interview Advice:

be yourself- it's more of a chat to get to know you
don't be afraid of talking about non-work related experience, this shows your versatility and that you have interests
make sure you have concrete examples e.g. team leadership etc, to make yourself look more credible when claiming these attributes.

Be confident but not arrogant. Put yourself forward but don't be too pushy. Make an effort but don't be 'try hard'. Be chatty but don't rule the conversation.

Application Advice:

Don't go for the most obvious brand in your essay - go for something a little bit different like a person (David Cameron) or a country (Colombia).

Don't try and be funny or try and be a bit too clever (poems are not welcome). Show your ideas and intellect without trying too hard.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself! If it's the right place for you, then that will come through
Don't try and conform to your idea of an 'advertising graduate'.
Speak to as many people in the room as possible - don't stay in a clique.

Application Advice:

You don't need to be the fully formed thing, you just need to be 'passionately curious' as Einstein once said. A willingness to learn, self awareness, enthusiasm and the fearless drive to 'get stuck in' will all lend themselves to success.

Interview Advice:

The interviews are held on group days. This is a creative industry you're trying to break into: don't present yourself like an estate agent. Stand out, have personality, have a memorable 'quirky' thing (but make sure this isn't contrived!). You need to show that you're creative and a great communicator: that's what the job is all about.
It's ok not to know all the answers or to have identified your faults - self awareness is a good quality - but of course don't dwell on them.

Be different. Make sure that you write some thing tailored to DAS and original. Your enthusiasm, skill and uniqueness needs to jump off the page.

Interview Advice:

Make sure you have reread your application and have lots of interesting and relevant examples, experiences and ideas that you can draw on to make your interview enjoyable for you and the interviewer.

Application Advice:

Try to think of creative responses to questions and tasks. Don't be afraid to mention experience beyond the industry or personal interests, this helps them to build a picture of the type of person you are, a broad range of experience is valuable in this industry as we work with such a variety of clients and brands.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself. It isn't worth trying to be something you're not, these guys will find out quickly!

Application Advice:

Be yourself and show a passion for brands and communications. It sounds cliché to be yourself however the people that will read your application and interview you are in a people based industry so being genuine is very important (and will be found out if you don't do it!). It's also key that you can talk passionately about whatever you put in your application, e.g the brand and comms examples. Your role at DAS will be to gain the trust of clients in order for them to see the value of your product/ services. The passion therefore for what you do has to be clear and genuine.

Interview Advice:

It's important to read up on the company (DAS, Omnicom etc) but more importantly to take opportunities on the interview day to speak with industry/agency people. So often I have been at interview days and run presentations where candidates just talk by themselves and I am left in the corner. it would be the perfect opportunity to speak with me, ask me questions as I am then feeding back to the interview selection team!

Application Advice:

Develop your own point of view on aspects of industry. Being clued up on what's going on is a given.

Interview Advice:

Consider the balance between being assertive and polite. It's important to make an impression, but the role requires you to be around lots of new and different people all the time, so you can't push yourself forward rudely.

Application Advice:

Be yourself! You cannot lie to get onto the programme, the people heading it up have been doing this for so long that they can spot it from a mile away. It helps if you can network - it is the life blood of our industry, so if you are not a particularly social person, get out there and practise!

Interview Advice:

Why are you the right person for this? What makes you able to adapt to different environments? You will have to be highly adaptable and open to new experiences. Just be open and honest and always wear a smile.

Application Advice:

Be yourself. Its all about the group networking in the interviews.

Interview Advice:

Know your CV inside out, know what you learnt from each experience and tell stories that you care about.

Dont worry about being too smart, or knowing everything about marketing - they are not looking for this. A sensible amount of research about the agencies in DAS and what they do is important, but really they are looking for potential based on what you have done in your life so far - not how many marketing books you have read.
