Application Advice:

Read up on Nationwide's key products (e.g. launch of FlexOne), recent big news stories (e.g. CCDS issuance) and culture (PRIDE). A keen awareness of how a Building Society differs from the likes of Barclays and Lloyds is essential.

Interview Advice:

Use the interview as an opportunity to explore an area further and display your knowledge. For example, credit risk. An appreciation that it extends beyond just prime mortgages to buy-to-let (TMW), treasury, commercial, credit cards and personal loans. An awareness of the 3 credit rating agencies, 3 credit scoring agencies and how banks calculate credit risk at both a granular and portfolio level perspective.

Application Advice:

Nationwide we're very interested in me and my personality, more so than my past experiences.

My personality and how I fit in with PRIDE was much more important than my lack of previous banking experience

Application Advice:

Learn the acronym PRIDE (Putting members first, Rewarding Membership, Inspiring Trust, Excellent Customer Service) and try to think of examples of you exhibiting those characteristics for the interview (if you get there). I think it crops up on the application form as well.

Try to gain a small understanding of what a mutual rather than a PLC or Ltd is. A mutual is a company that is owned by it's members (Customers) rather than private shareholders. Nationwide is a mutual.

Try to big up and include in you application form/CV evidence of working in a team and if possible leading a team.

Interview Advice:

When I had the interview in September last year, it consisted of:

A group exercise : We were given a business proposition that had 6 potential solutions and each group member had to argue for the one they were given. Basically you just have to listen to what others say and try to make relevant points. Don't fall into the trap of endlessly just arguing your point.

A one on one speaking exercise: After being given a business brief (mine was about fexible working from home) with two potential solutions we were given about half an hour to read the brief and to come up with which solution we'd choose.

A one on one interview: It covered the standard interview things.

A critical thinking test: standard

Application Advice:

Nationwide wants each of its employees to demonstrate its core values, and this is something they're looking for in potential new starters. Research Nationwide's values and really think about whether these match up to your own personal values - if they do you'll probably be a good fit for the business. Make sure in your application you really consider times when you have demonstrated these values/behaviours.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself - successful applicants really allowed their personality to shine through. Whilst your achievements are important, the interviewers want to establish whether you're someone they would like to work alongside.

Application Advice:

Focus more on general skills which can be applied to many different areas rather than specific technical experience. Try and relate experiences to the company ethos.

Interview Advice:

Prepare answers to standard competency questions, there are far more of these than technical questions. Be prepared for group work/debates; stand out without dominating.

Sell your adaptability to unforeseen events and that you can cope with a heavy workload.

How have you persuaded others in a team?
When have you had to change your plans in a difficult scenario?
Example of when you have led a team and how did you overcome the challenges you faced?

Application Advice:

You can only apply for one role, so research this thoroughly and ensure that this is the one for you. The assessment process is quite in-depth so I would avoid exaggerating on my CV/application as it's likely to get found out. Consider your main strengths, skills and achievements and have tangible examples of when you have demonstrated these. Incorporate the STAR method into your answers too.

Interview Advice:

Research the organisation and the industry. Read the annual results and accounts so you understand how Nationwide is different and also to ensure that your personality will fit with the organisation. If you're the type of person who likes to operate in a cut-throat, dog-eat-dog environment then Nationwide probably isn't the place for you. Nationwide has a set of values that it calls PRIDE, they resonate strongly with all employees (including the ones who will be interviewing you) so a sound understanding of these will also help.

Application Advice:

1. Nationwide has the most sensible, grounded, graduate recruitment process I have undertaken. From application to final assesment day. It's very challenging, but nobody is trying to trick you - seriously.

Interview Advice:

1. None of your assessors have been overly influenced by reality TV shows in their expectations of you, or their approach - so tone down 'The Apprentice' in you if you have one.
2. Be yourself (within the bounds of professionalism!), Nationwide has a strong business culture, if you're yourself on the day you'll know if it suits you (and they'll know if it suits you). I know you might not think so but it's really important to feel comfortable where you work.

Research the company and make sure you would like to work in the corpoarate environment- it can be a culture shock if you're not used to the large company style. If you reach the interview phase make sure you know a lot about PRIDE as the company puts a major emphasis on this.
Use the STAR model to answer competency based questions (S-Situation, T-Task, A-Action and R-Result).

Interview Advice:

Telephone interview consisted of 4-5 competency based questions and lasted about 45 minutes.
The assessment centre started the night before. All candidates stay in a hotel the night before and go to dinner with two current graduates- this isn't assessed so ask them anything you like!
The day itself consists of a written test, an hour interview, group and individual exercises and presentations. Again, research the company and know your stuff!
