Application Advice:

Ensure you know your stuff and are thoroughly researched and prepared. Be prepared to work closely with people and become friends with your future colleagues, connecting with them socially as well as professionally. Be prepared to contribute beyond your role both professionally and with extra activities and the community.

Interview Advice:

Prepare thoroughly, the interview is long and hard.

Application Advice:

Apply early. Make sure you know a bit about the company and have a question or two to ask to try and find out if you think you'd fit in. (This advice applies to all applications in general.)

Interview Advice:

Just be yourself, it's better to find out sooner rather than later whether or not the job will be right for you.

Software Developer, Support Team at Softwire

Application Advice:

Don't worry about having no programming experience - Softwire are very happy to train new starters.

Developer, at Softwire

Application Advice:

Softwire take an application form, not a CV. Explain any technical experience you have, but be honest! You don't need to have a lot of technical experience as long as you can pick things up quickly to compensate.

Interview Advice:

Expect a technical interview. Most of the questions will be problems to solve, with only a few short questions about why you're applying, etc. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you're completely stuck rather than getting lost and going round in circles.

Application Advice:

It's useful to have had some prior programming experience, but on the whole, Softwire just looks for intelligent, adaptive people who will work well together.

Interview Advice:

We'll give a mix of logic puzzles, some programming exercises (no prior knowledge of any languages is required), and chats.

Software Developer, C# Dev at Softwire

Application Advice:

A lot of programming experience isn't needed but it's good to know how to think through a problem logically, and be able to design an algorithm.

Software Developer, London at Softwire

Application Advice:

Just fill it out and press send - it's really quick.

Interview Advice:

Don't try to prepare specifically for this - it's essentially just an IQ test.

Project Manager, London at Softwire

Application Advice:

Don't be put off by lack of programming experience.

Interview Advice:

Talk your way through problem solving rather than just trying to get the right answer - a well thought out and explained answer with a mistake is often better than silently writing a solution.

Software Developer, at Softwire

Application Advice:

Show an interest in programming, do some projects in your own time.

Interview Advice:

Don't stress too much, do a lot of thinking out loud and don't be afraid to say things that you might think seem stupid.

Application Advice:

It's a very competitive job. They are looking for bright people who will fit in with the team, and learn quickly too.

Interview Advice:

Be yourself. Think logically.

Interview Advice:

Don't panic, it's mostly technical.

Application Advice:

We look for smart and motivated people, and weight academic achievements very highly so think about maths challenges, good degree results etc.

Interview Advice:

You don't need specific coding skills, but you need to be able to think analytically. Prepare for problems that ask you to make robust algorithms in a variety of forms.

Technical Lead, Delivery at Softwire

Application Advice:

If you have a technical mind, then the interviews will be really easy. You just need to show up fresh, so try to sleep well and drink some coffee before the start.
Softwire is looking for quick learners and not so much for your experience or knowledge (although, it will obviously help).

Software Developer, at Softwire

Application Advice:

Do some hobby programming to see if you really love to do it or just think you do through the little bits you have done in your course. It is one thing doing some lab work but completely another writing code in a commercial environment.

Interview Advice:

Be engaging but not arrogant. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

HR Admin, HR at Softwire

Interview Advice:

Be enthusiastic and try to relax. The interviewers are all really friendly and are trying to give you a chance to show your best, not trip you up.

Application Advice:

Just try to relax and be yourself; we're not looking for people to jump through hoops, we just want people who can do the job and do it well.

Application Advice:

Write some computer scripts to get used to how programs works (check out https://projecteuler.net/ if you need some problems to solve).

Interview Advice:

This goes for any interview:
Talk out loud about what you're thinking. If it's wrong, it'll allow the interviewer to help you realise the correct answer.

Software Developer, at Softwire

Application Advice:

Just be honest on the application form.

Interview Advice:

You'll be given some problems that can be solved in an algorithmic or mathematical way. Just try to stay relaxed and clearly think through a solution, and explain it to the interviewer; if you're on the right track but you haven't got it yet he or she will probably help you.

Software Developer, at Softwire

Application Advice:

The application isn't that important - lots of people get an interview, and that's the time to shine.

Interview Advice:

Talk through your reasoning.

Application Advice:

Softwire will want to see evidence that you're passionate about software development - e.g. that you've tried out programming as a hobby, like Project Euler or making a website. Softwire are very committed to equal opportunities and want to encourage a broad range of people to apply.

Interview Advice:

Think out loud, show your working, don't be afraid to take time to think about your answers.

Application Advice:

The application process is really quick and painless. Just send off a CV or our online form, there will be a telephone interview soon after and if you get through that a face to face interview. We aim to let candidates know the result the following day. Interviews are often conducted (at least in part) by actual developers, so use this opportunity to ask anything you want!

Interview Advice:

The interview is very technical- keep calm and explain your thought processes if you get stuck.

Software Developer, at Softwire

Application Advice:

You need to show you have enthusiasm for the job, even if you haven't programmed before.

Interview Advice:

It is quite long and technical - make sure you're ready to think logically.

Developer, Support at Softwire

Application Advice:

Focus on showing potential to learn; we're fundamentally looking for smart people capable of picking up wide selections of totally new skills quickly, more than we're looking for particular general experience (mostly, and despite that we do always appreciate experience that is already there of course!)

Interview Advice:

Interviews are initially mostly algorithmic problem solving type problems, to start with, since we've found this is the best way to quickly evaluate candidate's abilities to think on their feet and solve new programming-related challenges, which is what we're primarily looking for. Try to be prepared for this! A quick skim around common simple algorithm and programming challenges will probably put you in good stead.
